4. True or false: A writing center is…
◦ a place to drop off your papers,
◦ a one-stop proofreading service,
◦ an automatic “A” center.
The truth is, all of these notions are false.
5. Our mission is to help students become
better writers through free one-on-one
tutoring with undergraduate tutors.
We are here for all students, not just those
who struggle with writing.
We can help at any stage of the writing
process: brainstorming, outlining, drafting,
revising, etc., but it is a disadvantage to you
if you bring in a paper the day it is due.
6. To make the most of your session, bring:
◦ the paper you are working on,
◦ the assignment prompt or rubric,
◦ questions and concerns.
Youcan bring a physical copy of your
paper, save it on your laptop, or e-mail it
to yourself to pull up on one of the
center’s computers.
7. First, someone will read the paper aloud.
◦ This gives the tutor a sense of the paper while
allowing the student to hear her work and gain
a better sense of how to revise.
Then, both parties will discuss the paper.
◦ Tutors will address Higher Order Concerns (eg.,
content, idea development, organization) and
then move to Lower Order Concerns (eg.,
grammar and punctuation) if time allows for it.
