Metrics have long been used as an indicator of academic success and as a way to make key decisions. As the measurement of impact becomes increasingly important within academia there has been something of a backlash against trusting purely quantitative methods of assessment. The Responsible Metrics movement aims to ensure that metrics are used fairly alongside other measures to gather a true assessment of impact. This webinar will discuss what the Responsible Metrics movement is, why it was developed, its importance and how library staff can best educate their research staff.

Computational creativity research has produced many computational systems that are described as creative [1]. A comprehensive literature survey reveals that although such systems are labelled as creative, there is a distinct lack of evaluation of the Creativity of creative systems [1]. Nowadays, a number of online testing websites exist but the drawback of these tests is that every student who gives a particular test will always be given the same set of questions irrespective of their caliber. Thus, a student with a very high Intelligence Quotient (IQ) may be forced to answer basic level questions and in the same way weaker students may be asked very challenging questions which they cannot response. This method of testing results into a wastage of time for the high IQ students and can be quite frustrating for the weaker students. This would never benefit a teacher to understand a particular student’s caliber for the subject under Consideration. Each learner has different learning status and therefore different test items should be used in their evaluation. This paper proposes an Adaptive Evaluation System developed based on an Item Response Theory and would be created for mobile end user keeping in mind the flexibility of students to attempt the test from anywhere. This application would not only dynamically customize questions for students based on the previous question he/she has answered but also by adjusting the degree of difficulty for test questions depending on student ability, a teacher can acquire a valid & reliable measurement of student’s competency.

Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) are a popular large-scale assessment tool. MCQs make it much easier for test-takers to take tests and for examiners to interpret their results; however, they are very expensive to compile manually, and they often need to be produced on a large scale and within short iterative cycles. We examine the problem of automated MCQ generation with the help of unsupervised Relation Extraction, a technique used in a number of related Natural Language Processing problems. Unsupervised Relation Extraction aims to identify the most important named entities and terminology in a document and then recognize semantic relations between them, without any prior knowledge as to the semantic types of the relations or their specific linguistic realization. We investigated a number of relation extraction patterns and tested a number of assumptions about linguistic expression of semantic relations between named entities. Our findings indicate that an optimized configuration of our MCQ generation system is capable of achieving high precision rates, which are much more important than recall in the automatic generation of MCQs. Its enhancement with linguistic knowledge further helps to produce significantly better patterns. We furthermore carried out a user-centric evaluation of the system, where subject domain experts from biomedical domain evaluated automatically generated MCQ items in terms of readability, usefulness of semantic relations, relevance, acceptability of questions and distractors and overall MCQ usability. The results of this evaluation make it possible for us to draw conclusions about the utility of the approach in practical e-Learning applications.

As the e-commerce is gaining popularity various customer surveys of objects are currently accessible on the Internet. These surveys are frequently disordered, prompting challenges in knowledge discovery and object assessment. This article proposes an object feature positioning skeleton, which consequently recognizes the critical features of an object from online customer surveys. The critical object features are recognized focused around two perceptions: 1) they are normally commented extensively by customers and 2) customer suppositions on the critical feature significantly impact their general assessments on the object. Specifically, given the customer surveys of an item, we first extract the object feature by a shallow reliance parser and focus customer suppositions on these features through an opinion characterizer. We then create a probabilistic object feature positioning calculation to identify the criticalness of perspectives by at the same time considering feature recurrence and the impact of customer opinion given to every feature over their general opinion. The experimental results on 3 popular products demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach.

Data mining is the crucial steps to find out previously unknown information from large relational database. various technique and algorithm are their used in data mining such as association rules, clustering and classification and prediction techniques. Ease of the techniques contains particular characteristics and behaviour. In this paper the prime focus on clustering technique and prediction technique. Now a days large amount of data stored in educational database increasing rapidly. The database for particular set of student was collected. The clustering and prediction is made on some detailed manner and the results were produce. The K-means clustering algorithm is used here. To find nearest possible a cluster a similar group the turning point India is the performance in higher education for all students. This academic performance is influenced by various factor, therefore to identify the difference between high learners and slow learner students it is important for student performance to develop predictive data mining model.

The accuracy of collaborative-filtering recommender systems largely depends on three factors: the quality of the rating prediction algorithm, and the quantity and quality of available ratings. While research in the field of recommender systems often concentrates on improving prediction algorithms, even the best algorithms will fail if they are fed poor quality data during training. Active learning aims to remedy this problem by focusing on obtaining better quality data that more aptly reflects a user’s preferences. In attempt to do that, an active learning strategy selects the best items to be presented to the user in order to acquire her ratings and hence improve the output of the RS. In this seminar, I present a set of active learning strategies with different characteristics and the evaluation results with respect to several evaluation measures (i.e., MAE, NDCG, Precision, Coverage, Recommendation Quality, and, Quantity of the acquired ratings and contextual conditions). The traditional evaluation of active learning strategies has two major flaws: (1) Performance has been evaluated for each user independently (ignoring system-wide improvements) (2) Active learning strategies have been evaluated in isolation from unsolicited user ratings (natural acquisition). Addressing these flaws, I present that an elicited rating has effects across the system, so a typical user-centric evaluation which ignores any changes of rating prediction of other users also ignores these cumulative effects, which may be more influential on the performance of the system as a whole (system-centric). Hence, I present a novel offline evaluation methodology and use it to evaluate some novel and state of the art rating elicitation strategies. While the first set of experiments was done offline, the true value of active learning must be evaluated in an online setting. Hence, in the second part of the seminar, I present a novel active learning approach that exploits some additional information of the user (i.e. the user’s personality) to deal with the cold start problem in an up-and-running mobile context-aware RS called STS, that provides users with recommendations for places of interest (POIs). The results of live user studies, have shown that the proposed AL approach significantly increases the quantity of the ratings and contextual conditions acquired from the user as well as the recommendation accuracy.

In this paper we describe an open learning object repository on Statistics based on DSpace which contains true learning objects, that is, exercises, equations, data sets, etc. This repository is part of a large project intended to promote the use of learning object repositories as part of the learning process in virtual learning environments. This involves the creation of a new user interface that provides users with additional services such as resource rating, commenting and so. Both aspects make traditional metadata schemes such as Dublin Core to be inadequate, as there are resources with no title or author, for instance, as those fields are not used by learners to browse and search for learning resources in the repository. Therefore, exporting OAI-PMH compliant records using OAI-DC is not possible, thus limiting the visibility of the learning objects in the repository outside the institution. We propose an architecture based on ontologies and the use of extended metadata records for both storing and refactoring such descriptions.

Una trobada on els bibliotecaris de les institucions que formen part del CBUC intercanvien informació pràctica sobre les seves iniciatives de repositoris institucionals i accés obert.

from Emanuele Bellini, Paolo Nesi. a) Low metadata quality affects the discover, find, identify, select, obtainability of digital resources. b) Identifying and fixing metadata quality issues is a really time consuming task. With a significant number of records this task might be impossible to execute. ---- a) The Completeness seems to be well addressed by all IR analyzed b) There are some issues in the Accuracy dimension. The major problems were detected on the free – text fields such Title and Description c) The DC is not expressive enough to support the complexity of the resources and their descriptive needs d) We showed the validity of QP model respect to those derived from the other guidelines (e.g CRUI) e) There are some cases in which the values could be considered accurate but their encoding format was not included in the our measurement model. Shared measuring modalities should be defined

Collaboration, communication, creativity, critical thinking and problem-solving are among the skills that are needed to study and work in this 21st century. As important as they are, evaluating, assessing and teaching them in a practical, scalable and efficient way is still a challenge not fully met by current pedagogical-technological practices. Multimodal Learning Analytics (MmLA), the processing and analysis of multiple sources of data to better understand and improve learning processes, has been posed as a possible solution to augment the natural capabilities of both instructors and students to provide and receive feedback to support the development of those skills. During this session, we will explore the affordances that low-cost sensors and current advances in artificial intelligence provide to automatically record and analyze face-to-face, complex learning processes as those involved for the development of 21st-Century Skills. Finally, we will discuss and ideate practical MmLA tools that could be built to augment your current teaching and learning practices.

Keynote at ECTM 2016: The massification of education at the start of the industrial revolution created an efficient but less effective learning process compared to one-to-one tutoring. The information age has only increased the pressure on the educational system and revealed its shortcomings. However, the same technological advancement can also help the system to be not only more efficient but even more effective than before. During this talk, the impact that applied research in a large array of technological fields (from AI to IoT) could have in understanding and improving the learning process will be discussed.
