Vodafone wields largest base of music subscribers in

it's actually megacarrier Vodafone, which offers access to around 2 million DRM -free
tracks at a variety of price points in Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands,
Portugal, Spain and the UK, a library that it says will grow to some 6 million in 2010.
Universal, Sony, Warner, and EM I all have deals in place with the carrier -- probably one
of the big reasons they've been able to amass so many subscribers, a number that
currently stands around 450,000 spread across eight markets. Granted, compared to
iTunes, half a million users still isn't much of a market driver -- but if nothing else, it
seems to validate the business model, give carriers a big voice in the content distribution
conversation, and serve as a testament to the fact that users are considering phones of all
brands and platforms to be viable music players.

Sony Ericsson Aspen: first with Windows Mobile 6.5.3
from Engadget M obile by Thomas Ricker

MOBILE FORM BUILDER
It's finally here: Windows M obile 6.5.3, the iterative finger-friendly Windows M obile
release that should have been wrapped into 6.5.0. The latest mobile wares from M icrosoft
come wrapped inside the Sony Ericsson Aspen (aka, Faith); a business-focused
QWERTY candybar with 2.4-inch QVGA TFT touchscreen LCD, 3.2 megapixel camera,
A-GPS with Google M aps, 3.5-mm audio jack, WiFi, and microSD expansion. This latest
addition to Sony Ericsson's GreenHeart portfolio comes in black or white silver and
packs quad-band GSM /EDGE with either HSPA 900/2100 or 850/900/2100 radios
(depending on region). Available in Q2.
Back to Windows M obile 6.5.3 for a second, although this is a .dot.dot update it's
actually a fairly significant move for M icrosoft. For starters, this release now includes a
more finger-friendly layout (no stylus needed even when digging deep into the OS),
support for capacitive touchscreens (huzzah!), and acts as a platform to enable
multitouch. M icrosoft has also improved browser performance with faster page load
times and better memory management while improving the pan and flick gestures and
zoom and rotational speeds. Sounds like somebody is getting ready for M obile World
Congress.

Samsung GT-S8500 is first with Bluetooth 3.0
from Engadget M obile by Thomas Ricker
And here we have it: what's likely to be the world's first Bluetooth 3.0 phone courtesy of
the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG). According to the filing's description, the
"compact and slim" Samsung GT-S8500 is a touchscreen slate phone with a "high
resolution" 3.1-inch OLED sporting a TouchWIZ UI and quad-band GSM /EDGE radios.
The advantages of the 3.0 Bluetooth spec approved in April are faster throughput (up to
24M bps) and more frugal power usage -- both welcome advances in modern media-
playing handsets. Although it's not stated we can assume an official launch in Barcelona
for M obile World Congress.

HTC pulls wraps off Droid Eris' kernel source
from Engadget M obile by Chris Ziegler

They knew this day was coming, but still, we can't help but feel like there must be some
higher-ups at Verizon that are squirming today at the knowledge that the innermost
workings of one of their highest-profile smartphones -- the Droid Eris -- are now
available to anyone willing to invest the couple minutes that the package takes to
download. This should give hackers some more elbow room to cook custom ROM s for
Verizon's remix of the Hero -- and if they can beat an official Android 2.1 release for the
phone by even a single day, that sounds like a win in our book.

Palm Pre Plus MMS and GPS issues crop up, webOS
update can't come soon enough
from Engadget M obile by Chris Ziegler
It doesn't look like we've got any
showstoppers here -- but just as with any
major new smartphone release, Verizon's
Pre Plus is starting to take some lumps
after romping in the field for a week since
its retail availability kicked off. Of the
two biggies being cited so far, one is of
particular concern: apps other than VZ
Navigator don't seem to take advantage of
GPS augmentation, meaning they're
relying on a straight-up GPS signal alone
to get a location lock -- something that
often doesn't work on a phone (a reliable
workaround seems to be to open VZ Navigator before you open the app you really need,
but still, not an optimal situation). The second, less troublesome issue involves sending
MM S messages over WiFi; basically, you can't. The phone forgets to fire up cellular data
to send the message and tries to route it over the WiFi connection instead, which
inevitably fails. What's odd about both of these is that they seem like regressions from the
software already rolled out to Sprint (and other) Pres, and a surprising lack of rigor from
a carrier known for putting its phones through the gauntlet prior to release. Let's hope we
see an over-the-air update in short order, shall we?

Bada getting 'latest version of TouchWiz,' first model a

The screen shots we've seen of Bada so
far don't really remind us of the

today, but a new blog post on Samsung's
official Bada site says that the platform
will definitely be hooked up with "the
latest version of TouchWiz" with "chic
touch interaction and components to
increase its simplicity and ease of use."
What's unclear is whether this'll be a
ground-up rethinking of Sammy's classic
full-touch user experience or just a
grafting of its latest production version
onto Bada -- but the good news is that
we'll find out soon enough, because the
company goes on to say that we'll be seeing "the new Bada smartphone at M WC this
month." We'll admit, we don't know how we feel yet about the use of "Bada" and
"smartphone" in the same sentence -- but we'll know plenty more in a couple of weeks.

Here's the thing about Sony Ericsson's Xperia Pureness: once you get past the translucent
display, there's not much to it. Seriously -- it doesn't have 3G, a camera, hunks of
precious metal, or even a fancy name to flaunt like Vertu, Dior, or Versace; it's just a
low-end phone from a mass-market manufacturer that can't do much other than make
calls. We suppose that's why it was so easy for a Shenzhen KIRFer to pop out this near-
perfect duplicate of the Pureness -- the Somy X5 -- in no time. Heck, it's even got support
for two SIM s, or exactly twice as many as you'll find on the $1,000 genuine article --
which, if you're keeping track, is over twelve times the bargain-basement sticker on the
Somy here at RM B 550 ($81). Anyhow, looks like it's back to that search for a faithful

Alcatel's Pre-alike OT-980 with Android seeks to

North Americans are about as familiar with Alcatel as Europeans are with baseball, but
the brand -- owned by China's TCT -- actually does a decent amount of low- to mid-end
handset business around the world. One thing Alcatel isn't known for, though, is
venturing into the smartphone fray, so it comes as a bit of a surprise that they're taking a

Motorola Devour for Verizon gets boxed, shares Pixi's

MOBILE FORM BUILDER
M otorola's so-called Calgary has found itself on a lengthy, fascinating journey from
rumor to retail -- a journey that began way back in 2008. Finally, here we are a whole
bunch of months later, the high-end Droid having been released back in November and
Verizon still without a midrange choice for Android hopefuls -- but that's about to
change. Right, Verizon? Right? The latest intel from Android and Me suggests that the
Devour (as it'll almost certainly be known to the public) will feature a Qualcomm
M SM 7627 -- the same next-gen entry-level core being used by the Pixi that's designed to
replace the aging M SM 7600 series, very likely a chip that we're going to be seeing a
whole lot of over the next 12-18 months in devices that manufacturers don't deem worthy
of Snapdragon. M eanwhile, Android Central seems to have scored a shot of some
promotional material for the Devour suggesting that it's not far off -- the site says we're
looking at a retail box here, but considering how small and narrow the Droid's box is, this
could actually be some in-store signage or something to that effect. We'll know soon
enough, hopefully.
[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]
Update: And look at this, M otorola's support documents for the Devour are now live (we
count 10 pages' worth, total). Not too much interesting in here, but we can confirm that
the name will be Devour, it's got WiFi, and there'll be a car kit available. Thanks,

China Unicom profits down 50 percent, NTT DoCoMo

from Engadget M obile by Chris Ziegler

Call it proof that there's a global wireless karma
equilibrium, if you will, that needs to be
maintained: China Unicom has warned that its net
profit for 2009 will be down a whopping 50
percent, while one of its doppelgangers across the
Sea of Japan -- NTT DoCoMo -- has encountered
exactly the opposite fortune on news that it has
posted a 48 percent year-over-year improvement
in black ink. Unicom blames a perfect storm for
its misfortune, citing the sale of its CDMA
network in 2008 for an artificially inflated profit a year ago combined with the immense
expense involved in rolling out its HSPA cells over the course of 2009.
DoCoM o, meanwhile, ironically benefited from weak demand for new handsets that
pushed its procurement costs lower, and it might be the start of a revolution in the way
Japanese phones are announced and offered. Reports circulating today suggest that the
carrier is gearing up to offer micro SIM s capable of working with Apple's iPad, which
would mark a first for any major Japanese network; historically, you've had to buy a
phone from them, but with LTE looking more globally harmonious than any network
technology before it, this might be the start of something good. Speaking of LTE, NEC
has announced that it'll be demoing a concept LTE "terminal" (presumably a handset) in
cooperation with DoCoMo at M WC this month, likely the first example of many we'll see
over the course of the year as a number of carriers around the world march toward live
4G networks.

Nokia Custom Dictionary takes predictive text to the

Nokia's just posted its literally-named Custom Dictionary utility to Beta Labs' hallowed

predictive text solution to S60 devices so that you can use (in Nokia's own words) friends'
names and nicknames, places, and "slang" (read: every four-letter word you know) with
aplomb in the course of normal textual conversation. What makes Custom Dictionary
cooler than the average predictive text system, though, is the fact that you can load,
unload, and transfer custom word lists to and from your PC and between devices, making
it easy to back up your nonsensical gibberish in the event you lose or change phones. As
with anything in Beta Labs, you've got to proceed at your own risk -- but the stuff's
available to download now. Follow the break for a video demo.

Samsung to mass produce 3.3-inch touch-embedded

from Engadget M obile by Richard Lai
Need a mystery to keep you bewildered? Here's one: that layer of nothingness between
the touch-sensing glass and the display on your phone. Whatever that is, Samsung's about
to blow it away with a new 3.3-inch WVGA AM OLED touchscreen coming in M arch.
The magic lies in the on-cell touch technology -- 0.001mm-thick capacitive touch sensors
are deposited between the panel's substrate and the bottom polarizer film, thus removing
the usual touchscreen glass cover and the gap that follows. If all goes well, Samsung
should be delivering thinner and lighter phones with slightly brighter touchscreens in a
few months' time, or possibly phones in the current package but with bigger batteries.

1 person liked this
Cellphones, whether they be smart or dumb, are pretty amazing things -- but they're
pretty lifeless things, too. Design researcher Fabian Hemmert thinks that our gadgets
could move us a little more if only they could, well, move. As part of his TEDxBerlin talk
late last year he shows off some prototype phones, including one that can get thicker on
any of its four corners, and another that can shift its center of gravity similarly (shown
above). The possibilities are intriguing, like a status bar that could get physically hefty as
it gets weighed down with icons, but we're not sucking down all of Hemmert's Kool-Aid.
His idea of devices giving off a heartbeat and changing shape like they're breathing in
your pocket is just a little creepy, and more practically we have a hard enough time
holding onto our handsets as it is -- imagine all the suddenly top-heavy cellphones
leaping out of hands and to their doom.

Microsoft Tag makes a video appearance, still seeking

"It's the hyperlink in the physical world" says a M icrosoft PR man, giving us the most

Bell's Remote PVR software ensures you won't miss the
Canadiens Leafs game, even you're stuck in traffic
from Engadget M obile by Tim Stevens
When DirectTV started teasing an iPhone app about a year
ago our interests were certainly piqued -- and then
disappointed when it was revealed it would only allow
remote scheduling. When the Android version came along
we got our hopes up again for remote streaming of content,
but again got them dashed again. Now Rogers is doing the
disappointing, launching the charmingly titled "Remote PVR
Access from your Bell Smartphone" in Canada just before
the Olympics on February 12, though it's unclear right now
which smartphones will be covered. It too allows remote
scheduling of content and, sadly, not remote viewing. Some
day we'll get our wish -- some day.

Cash weighing you down? Credit limit too high? Luxury phone specialist M obiado might
just have the answer with its latest creation, the 712ZAF candybar. Billed as the
successor to the Luminoso, the Vancouver-based company's latest execution of
conspicuous consumption features a 2.2-inch QVGA display, AGPS, two-mic dynamic
noise reduction, a 5 megapixel camera with flash, and quadband EDGE plus UMTS 900 /
1900 / 2100 (M obiado has always had a bad habit of simply calling out "WCDM A"
without specifying UMTS or HSPA, but on that tiny display, it really doesn't matter too
much). The aluminum frame is surrounded with a ceramic coat in your choice of six
colors; no word on price or availability, but we'll venture a guess that breaking open your
piggy bank isn't going to cover it.

We know the FCC's already gotten a gander at this thing, but the general public... well,
that's another story altogether. Daily Mobile has a bunch of shots of what it claims to be
Sammy's upcoming S5620 M onte, a silly name from a company that certainly hasn't
shied away from funny branding in the past (one quick look at the Corby or Rant should
be able to verify that for you). Anyhow, we're told to expect a TouchWiz-powered feature
phone here with a 3-inch display, HSDPA, and a 3.5mm headphone jack which you can
clearly see in some of the pictures. A quick look at the FCC filing also reveals WiFi,
though the lack of WCDM A testing indicates that we won't have 850 or 1900M Hz 3G
support -- in other words, North Americans are out of luck as usual. If we had to guess,
this one might get the covers pulled off at M WC next month.

Blyk-powered 'Orange Shots' service coming next
month to Monkey customers
from Engadget M obile by Chris Ziegler
Now that Blyk's free-service-for-ads model has
officially bitten the dust, we're starting to see new
ideas come out of the woodwork from the Dutch
company that might (or might not) stand a better
chance of striking a survivable balance of value
and profitability. Orange UK has announced that
it'll be launching Orange Shots as of February 1,
a program for advertisers that lets them target
subscribers of its M onkey prepaid service in very
specific ways. Sound familiar? Yeah, that was
pretty much what Blyk had been doing all along -- difference being that they're no longer
trading access to that targeted group for free minutes and texts. As far as we can tell,
Orange is simply offering its subscribers the hope of getting special offers from
advertisers, meaning its margins are probably going to be a lot higher here than Blyk's
ever were before -- assuming M onkey customers agree to sign up, of course. For now, it's
purely opt-in; let's hope it stays that way.

American carriers have had Wireless Priority Service in place for several years now,
giving government officials and first responders improved access to potentially
overloaded networks in the event of an emergency or high-density gathering -- but
historically, that service has been restricted to American soil. With the Winter Olympics
coming right up in Vancouver, AT&T figured it'd have quite a few G-M en strolling north
of the border, so it has worked with Rogers this month to roll out priority access for
devices roaming in Canada that are already authorized for the service. In a nutshell, that
means VIPs strolling around the luge circuit will be able to get through (and stay
through) if the crush of humanity gets too much for the poor, overworked cells to handle.
And no, you can't sign up for it, so don't even ask.

A certain UK bank operates a delightfully dorky
advertising campaign whose slogan is "we give you
extra." Well, in the case of mobile software
communities, that's exactly the case. From jailbroken
iPhones to PS One-emulating HD2s to multitouch-
enabled browsing on the Nexus One, the one group of
people we know we can truly rely on are other geeks.
So let's salute those heroes once more, in recognition of
the VisualBoyAdvance -- a webOS-based emulator for
Game Boy, Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance
games. The former two categories are said to play
smooth as you like, whereas the Advance stuff suffers
from slight slowdown at present. We've only seen it
playing on a Pre, but there should be no reason why
your Pixi wouldn't be allowed in on this party. A quick
video demo awaits after the break, and the source link
has all the installation details you'll need.

Available for download right now, version 1.0 will come with a pretty sweet feature
named Weave Sync, which harmonizes your bookmarks, tabs, history and passwords
across devices, making for a seamless transition between your desktop computer and
your mobile one. We reckon we could get used to that. Alas, Flash support is still
somewhat shaky, and does not come enabled by default, though you're free to flip the
switch and ride the lightning as it were. We're sure M ozilla will appreciate any crash

Xperia X10 officially headed to T-Mobile in Germany
this April
from Engadget M obile by Vladislav Savov
Announced to the world in early November last year,
the Xperia X10 has been Sony Ericsson's paper
flagship device for a good few months now, and
unfortunately the latest official word seems to
confirm that the wait will be even longer. NTT
DoCoM o has already stated it'll launch the handset
in Japan this April, and T-M obile has now also gone
official with an April timeframe for the X10's
German arrival. Guess we can consider that February
10 "expected launch" in the UK dead and buried by
this point. It's all rather lackluster in our eyes --
we've seen HTC produce the devastatingly versatile
HD2 and even the Nexus One in the time it's taken
Sony Ericsson to iron out bugs in a UI we suspected
was too ambitious from the start. Let's hope the final
product is worth the wait, eh?

At this particular point, 50-something days away from the earliest iPad deliveries, we
doubt too many people are up in arms about the iPad's ability to act as a jumbo iPhone.
On the other hand, if we told you you can take pretty much the entire iPad experience and
distill it down to your iPhone OS device, well you'd probably care a lot more, wouldn't
you? To get that extra 3D flavor to your UI, including the fetching iBooks shelf and other

Microsoft CFO says 'we'll have much more to say'

Every indication we've had out of

track for a grand unveiling at M obile
World Congress in Barcelona next month,
and indeed, Fox Business has none other
than CFO Peter Klein on record saying as
much -- the closest thing we've had to a
confirmation outside of Robbie Bach's
analyst remarks a few weeks back. At the
4:07 mark of the video, Klein says that
the company is "heads down" on WinM o
7 and expects to have "much more to say"
about the product out in Spain, which
would mark the one-year anniversary since the announcement of 6.5 at the same venue.
Considering the brutal response that last version endured over the better part of 2009, let's
hope they're coming to the table with something much, much more delicious this time
around.

SlingPlayer Mobile 2.0 for WinMo gets finger-friendly
from Engadget M obile by Chris Ziegler
Sling has given the Windows M obile
community a little love this week with the
release of SlingPlayer M obile 2.0,
blessing it with a totally redesigned "sleek
and intuitive" interface and a handful of
new features that bring it to parity with its
counterparts on other platforms. First off,
the UI's been reworked to make styli a
thing of the past -- everything should now
be usable with a finger -- and they've
added multiple viewing modes for
widescreen and zoomed content. You've also got support for Sling Accounts, an
improved guide and DVR control, and fully-blessed streaming over both 3G and WiFi on
any network. Anything running WinM o 6 or up with a touchscreen should theoretically
work and it's a free upgrade from 1.6 -- only catch is that you need a Slingbox Solo, Pro,
or Pro HD to use it (older models are being blocked, an annoying habit that we've seen
with other recent SlingPlayer releases). It's available for download now.

Nexus One for AT&T's 3G bands likely in the works
from Engadget M obile by Chris Ziegler

By all appearances, Google's trying to break Android free of the surly bonds of the
manufacturers and carriers that support it, opening its own online store and selling
unlocked Nexus Ones to anyone willing to pony up the $529. Problem is, the Nexus One
as we know it today is only available in a configuration that supports North American 3G
on AWS spectrum, meaning you've got to go with the States' fourth-largest carrier if you
want to blaze -- you've got no other option. That's not very "open," is it, Google?
That brings us to an FCC finding today. Take a look at the two labels above; the one on
the right comes from the current Nexus One. The label on the left, meanwhile, is
physically identical and comes from a new filing for a device with FCC ID NM 899110.
The old Nexus One has ID NM 899100, so this new device is just a single digit off --
likely a variant of the existing model. If you look into the RF reports a bit, you'll
immediately notice that the new handset supports 3G on WCDMA Bands I, II, and V,
meaning that it'll work on AT&T (and Rogers, Bell, and Telus for the Canadians in the
room) along with most of Europe. Same label style, nearly identical model ID, different
bands -- we think we know what's going on here. Google, your move.

AT&T's following on from a slightly different angle, it seems. BGR has scored what
appears to be some sort of FAQ for sales reps detailing new requirements for AT&T's so-

T-Mobile myTouch Slide in the wild?

With the G1 on its last legs, the CLIQ stands as T-Mobile USA's only QWERTY

that doesn't seem right, now, does it? Indeed, that rumored myTouch Slide looks like it's
going to get real here pretty shortly now that we're seeing shots of the thing in the wild,
and... well, it looks nothing like the original myTouch 3G (and even less like the Fender
edition). Beauty is certainly in the eye of the beholder -- and we'd want to wait until we
see this in the flesh -- but the myTouch Slide appears to lack the old model's attractive
contours, sticking with a spartan design strangely paired to a chrome-ringed earpiece.
Besides the clear addition of an optical pad here (something we'd previously heard HTC
would be pushing hard in 2010), it's apparently got an HVGA display, externally
accessible microSD slot, camera with flash, and unfortunately, an old-school ARM 11
processor. We're holding out hope that T-Mobile has plenty of higher-end gear waiting in
the wings, but for now, this looks like the G1's true spiritual successor.

HTC's HD2 carrying a secret stash of hidden RAM

Will this phone ever stop surprising us? Rumblings that all HD2 devices have 576M B of
RAM inside them started developing in China a little while before T-M obile unveiled its
upgraded US-bound handset with, funnily enough, the same amount of memory. Now,
those trusty souls over at XDA-developers have concocted custom ROM s for everyone
else to free up the extra 128M B of operational headroom, and user feedback appears to
corroborate the theory. We can hardly begin to fathom the reasons for HTC disabling part
of its available hardware, other than to guess that a WinM o 7 upgrade was in the
company's plans for this phone all along and it just wanted to keep its ability to handle
the new OS under wraps. Video and pictorial evidence of cracking past the 448M B
barrier after the break.

LG GD510 Pop's solar panel add-on finally ships

from Engadget M obile by Chris Ziegler
Considering the LG Pop's milquetoast specs, the best thing
going for it has to be its trick solar rear that's capable of injecting
three minutes of talk time for every eleven minutes of sunshine
you pour into it. Problem is, the panel was an accessory that
didn't ship in the box -- you had to buy it separately, and back at
the Pop's launch, it wasn't available. That's all been cleared up
now with news out of LG's German press office that the panel's
available for a stout €34.90 (about $49) on top of the phone's
€169 ($236) sticker -- pricey, perhaps, but you figure you'll
make it up in power savings over the course of a few years' use.
Over the long term, all phones should have these suckers built in
just for kicks, so let's hope LG's setting a precedent here.

Zune software references rumored Project Pink devices,
a video upload service?
from Engadget M obile by Ross M iller

MOBILE FORM BUILDER
We weren't sure things could get any more interesting with M icrosoft's mobile rumor
mill, but along comes Zune Boards with some tantalizing findings in the latest Zune
software update. First up is the eEndpointFamily files, which lists all the compatible
hardware -- ZuneHD, for example. Also found, however, were entries for "PmxPure" and
"PmxTurtle." PM X, if you recall, seems to be a reference to M icrosoft's Premium M obile
eXperiences group, the remnants of the Danger acquisition who have been whispered to
be working on Project Pink. As for Pure and Turtle, let's go back all the way to
September 2009, when we first heard those names as the initial Pink duo -- there were
some supposed renders, too. If that's not enough, two PMX table entries pointed to a
snippet of text stating that "Studio members" can "View and manage pictures and videos
taken with your phone at the Studio," followed by a link that for now redirects to
Zune.net. Could the mysterious Project Pink and the oft-rumored "Zune phone" be one in
the same, with some "Studio" service for uploading media to the cloud? Is this all some
red herring perpetuated by some amused M icrosoft staffers? We don't know, but it's mean
to tug at our heart strings like that, M icrosoft, and worse that it makes M obile World
Congress even more painful to wait for. #tmdp

T-Mobile myTouch 3G granted ultra-minor firmware

The CLIQ isn't having all the Android over-the-air update fun today -- and unlike
M otorola's little debacle, this upgrade looks like it's here to stay. The myTouch 3G has
started receiving what appears to be the tiniest of cute little updates -- so tiny, in fact, that
it fixes just one bug: a dodgy missed call indicator that wasn't showing up consistently.
The bottom line is that you can't expect Android 2.0 or 2.1 here -- you'll still be at 1.6,
and if you're intentionally not answering your phone, you may have actually preferred the
bug anyhow. Let us know how your updates go, folks.

Rest easy, iPad roamers: O2 and Orange have micro
SIM orders, too
from Engadget M obile by Chris Ziegler
Steve mentioned in his iPad preso
yesterday that he was pretty confident the
company would have international data
deals locked up by June or July of this
year -- but since the thing uses some
wacky new micro SIM standard, carriers
that intend to support it are going to need
to get the new chips in stock after having
used traditional SIM s for nearly twenty
years. That makes moving your iPad
around between carriers and your SIM
between devices that much harder, but
we've got a sliver of good news here: we're hearing from a tipster with connections at
supplier Gemalto that O2 and Orange both have micro SIM orders in the pipeline. That
doesn't necessarily mean that Apple is going to be trumpeting them as iPad partners with
special data plans, of course -- but even if they aren't, at least they'll have the necessary
equipment ready for you if you want to use your unlocked tablet on their airwaves.
Gemalto also has outstanding orders with T-M obile and AT&T (of course), so yeah -- it
might be a long road, but we're hopeful that these will start to become commonplace over
the next few years.

Motorola CLIQ briefly gets firmware update by

from Engadget M obile by Chris Ziegler
A few extremely lucky (or unlucky, depending on
how you look at it) CLIQ owners were blessed
with a new firmware update today, it seems,
before the goods were unceremoniously yanked
just minutes later. Phone Scoop reports that
software version 1.3.8 -- which still runs Android
1.5, by the bye -- was available for just 15
minutes before M otorola took it offline. No one's
coughed up a changelog yet, but users that have
received the update have reported that it claims to
improve GPS tracking and features a new option
for assigning functionality to a double-press of
the home button. For its part, Motorola's saying
that "a test version of the update was mistakenly
enabled" but isn't giving guidance on when we might see an official release -- so let's just
make sure it has Android 2.1 next time it goes live, yeah?

Among European wireless conglomerates, it's not just Deutsche Telekom that's
under the gun to make magic happen for investors these days. Shareholders of
the UK's Vodafone are banging on the doors, too, asking why the company's
stock is trading an estimated 30 percent lower than the sum of its parts -- and
they want something done about it. Part of the problem appears to be the fact
that Voda hasn't seen a dime from its 45 percent ownership of Verizon Wireless since
2005 (the joint venture simply hasn't paid any dividends) and it doesn't expect to for at
least another couple years -- but there are apparently a variety of assets in its portfoilo
around the world that have investors worked up, including its part ownership of France's
SFR. CEO Vittorio Colao (pictured) has made no secret of the fact that all options are on
the table and Verizon Communications would likely be more than happy to snap up
Vodafone's 45 percent stake; with the guys with all the money starting to get worked up,
we might see some blockbuster deals happen in 2010.

Motorola will 'broaden the scope' of Blur, sell a phone

Earnings calls tend to be about as exciting

the earnings call that M otorola held this

We hope you like Blur, because
it's not going anywhere. CEO

of our new smartphone [sic] this year will feature" the platform, and that it'll
"include enhancements to address the prosumer segment of the market." They're

one phone, and improve network efficiency to ease up on battery drain. All good
things, we reckon.
Feature phones in M oto's range will "meaningfully decline" as it heads toward
planned profitability in the fourth quarter through higher-margin smartphones.
Android isn't the only game plan, though -- it'll continue to develop its ultra low-
end handsets for emerging markets.
Following the Nexus One's lead, Jha said that it'll launch "at least one direct-to-
consumer device with Google." That matches up nicely with a statement he made
during our CES interview that "there will be multiple devices [launched through
Google] and I think that we said 'yes' today that probably this next device is our
device."
All told, we have every reason to believe that this'll be an exciting year for M oto fans --
and that HTC needs to keep a close eye on these guys.

AT&T spent a good bit of its earnings call today talking about its network -- not too
surprising, really, considering the cozy relationship between dropped calls, subscriber
count, and profit. The overall takeaway was that the company is pleased with its progress
and continues to improve thanks to the addition of new carriers at existing cell sites (read:
increased over-the-air capacity), an ongoing backhaul renovation, and the recent roll-out
of 7.2M bps capability across most of its 3G footprint. In terms of dropped calls
specifically, AT&T claims that the statistic dropped network-wide from 1.41 percent to
1.05 percent between December '08 and '09 -- not bad, though the real problems seem to
be in key high-density, high-visibility markets like M anhattan where it hasn't yet met its
vaguely-defined "performance objective." That said, it seems convinced that it'll patch

and considering that Apple's entrusting AT&T with the iPad, we don't
doubt that there's some work underway to mute the cries of "we want
Verizon" about 90 days from now. Then again, there's no substitute for
real-world experience, so we'll dare pose the question: are you seeing
improvement in your neck of the woods? Follow the break for another

Motorola files another small profit in fourth quarter
from Engadget M obile by Chris Ziegler
M oto appears to be continuing its long, arduous road toward recovery on news of its
financial results for the fourth quarter of '09 -- or, at the very least, it's not losing any
ground. Overall, the company posted a meager profit of $142 million for the quarter on
revenue of $5.723 billion, $14 million better than a quarter prior and a staggering $3.799
billion better than the same quarter a year ago. Breaking it down by division, M obile
Devices is still in the red, but not by terribly much -- it did $1.8 billion in sales with an
operating loss of $132 million, while Home and Networks M obility (the guys responsible
for wireless infrastructure and set-top boxes) made $91 million on sales of $2 billion.
Some 12 million handsets were shipped in the quarter alongside 3.4 million set-tops; that
marks a downtick of 1.4 million phones from the third quarter, but as the company shifts
focus to smartphones, it makes sense that would happen to a certain extent -- provided the
company can keep margins high. The company expects to lose somewhere between 1 and
3 cents per share in the first quarter of 2010, so the recovery isn't complete yet -- but
stemming the bleeding was an important first step.

AT&T activated 3.1 million iPhones last quarter, 1
million non-phones
from Engadget M obile by Paul M iller
While Verizon suffers a bit on paper, primarily thanks to a spendy
Alltel merger, AT&T has some pretty good news to report on the
"money" front. AT&T's $3 billion in earnings are up 26% over the
year ago quarter, and particularly hot on the wireless front with 3.1
million iPhone activations, 2.7 million new wireless customers, and
1 million non-phone devices like e-book readers. While the 2.7
million bests the 2.2 million newbies at Verizon Wireless, AT&T
gained less customers on contract thanks to its any -device-goes
ways, so it's hard to say who's really in the best position here. Still,
with devices like the Kindle, Nook, Sony Reader and now iPad in its
fold, AT&T is clearly the go-to for getting your not-a-phone onto
the internet. Now if only it could do it, um, well.

We've got no shortage of evidence that there's an updated version of the Tour on the way,

Nokia grows profits and smartphone share
in Q4
from Engadget M obile by Thomas Ricker
Pretty good news for Nokia today as it announces its Q4 results. Net income jumped 65%
to €948 million (on €12 billion in sales) or 26 eurocents per share, from €576 million
euros, or 15 eurocents a share, earned in Q4 2008. That handily beat the consensus
forecast of 19 eurocents per share. Importantly, Nokia grew its smartphone (or
"converged devices" in Nokia parlance) marketshare to a healthy 40%, up from 35% just
last quarter. Looking forward, Nokia cautioned that it expects its adjusted operating
margin in Devices & Services in Q1 2010 will be at the low end of its 12% to 14% target.
At the time of this posting, Nokia stock has jumped about 9% in recognition of these
good times.

The same cat that brought us the last M agnum scoop is back again, this time with a short

touchscreen / QWERTY hybrid device and its nearest cousins, the Bold 9000 and 9700.
Notably, the narrator points out that the phone shares its keyboard design more closely
with the 9000 than the 9700 -- for aficionados, this can be a crucial difference -- and it
generally shares its physical cues with the older Bold apart from a move to micro-USB
(and the SurePress screen, of course). Sadly, the proto here lacks an operating system so
there's not terribly much to see beyond the hardware itself, but it might all be for naught -

Like the camera references, this could just be another case of vestigial SDK weirdness --
but for whatever reason, devs have noticed (and we've been able to reproduce) a "Touch

during a traditional GSM call. It certainly seems like Steve would've bothered to mention
during today's festivities if you could do something crazy like pair up a Bluetooth headset
and go to town (and you'd need a voice plan on top of that $29.99 data anyway), so who
knows: either Apple's just made every UI element as adaptable as possible regardless of
whether it's applicable to a particular device, they're planning a higher-res iPhone down
the road, or they're integrating the bar into some VoIP action. Or... you know, none of the
above.

China says Android can stay, misses Google's point
from Engadget M obile by Vladislav Savov
A Chinese M inistry of Industry and Information
Technology spokesperson has today delivered a
statement affirming China's willingness to allow
Android devices to operate within the country
without restriction so long as they adhere to the
nation's laws. This means that whatever China's
response to Google no longer obeying its
censorship edicts may be, it won't be to disallow
Android -- which kind of makes sense considering
the growing roster of OPhones out there, all running a remixed version of the dessert-
loving mobile OS. Then again, Google's latest power play was to hold back Android
handsets from entering China, so we're not entirely sure how much the M ountain View
outfit cares about the M iddle Kingdom's apparent benevolence.

Apple lifts VoIP over cellular restrictions in new iPhone
SDK

Great news for the VoIP world: iCall, the maker of the iCall VoIP iPhone app that can
catch a GSM call and flip it over to WiFi, has issued a press release saying that the new
iPhone SDK allows for VoIP over 3G cellular connections. Previously such calls had to
be made over WiFi, since AT&T's network (or someone well acquainted with AT&T's
network) didn't think it was man enough to take the VoIP traffic. Interestingly, iCall says
its 3G-friendly VoIP app is available now, and is the first and only such app in the App
Store -- which seems like some pretty quick turnaround on everyone's part, but
apparently the 3G restriction wasn't anything to do with the software itself, but instead a
server-side block. We just tested this out and it totally works, and while we'll be looking
for more verification that the ban has indeed been lifted, it sounds like it's time for some
cheaply connected international parties in the streets.

Apple iPad's 'Micro SIM' explained
from Engadget M obile by Sean Cooper
While the news of Apple's iPad having 3G wasn't exactly a surprise, the move to a new
format for the SIM certainly was. The SIM -- that tiny card that holds your contact info
and account information that you find in your GSM handset -- is a 15 x 25mm plastic
card whereas the new M icro SIM (also known as a 3FF SIM ) is a diminutive 12 x 15mm,
about 52% smaller. Needless to say, it's not physically compatible with your current
phone. This card was developed by the ETSI (European Telecommunications Standards
Institute) to offer things like more storage space on-chip for provider applications,
increased control and security functions -- over what, we don't know -- and the new
smaller form factor allows it to fit in tiny devices. Frankly, we wouldn't call the iPad
"tiny" and we have absolutely no clue what justification Apple had to switch to it other
than a desire to be different -- this is the company that pioneered M ini DisplayPort, after
all -- but the long and the short of it is that you're going to have a hard time finding a
carrier offering M icro SIM s in the short term since the GSMA doesn't appear to be
actively spearheading a mass conversion. In fact, from AT&T's perspective, this is better
than a software lock in some ways -- you're not going to be able to download a hack that
gets you on another network, so you're totally at the mercy of your carrier at choice for
providing a compatible card. Intentionally evil? Perhaps not -- all standards have to start
somewhere -- but it's an awful pain in the ass.
Update: T-M obile (in a partnership with Lok8u GPS devices) announced they were
bringing the 3FF SIM to US shores back on January 6th of this year. See the source link
for more info.

Nexus One Desktop Dock now available for $45
from Engadget M obile by Chris Ziegler
The rumored desktop dock for the Nexus One
has been made official today -- conveniently
(and accurately) bearing the official name of
Nexus One Desktop Dock -- running $45 sold
separately or bundled with your phone
purchase. As expected, dropping the phone into
the dock triggers the Clock application to fire
up to give you access to alarms, music, and
weather (not unlike the Droid), but the special
sauce lies out back where you'll find a 3.5mm
jack that connects to your stereo system using
an included 3.5mm-to-RCA cable. A charger's
included to keep the phone topped off while it's resting in the cradle, too, and considering
the presence of Bluetooth here, we're guessing audio is ferried via A2DP rather than a
hardwired connection. Technology! The dock's available right now for purchase directly
from Google.

iPhone SDK calls out nonexistent iPad cam, confirms
split views and popovers are iPad-specific
from Engadget M obile by Chris Ziegler
iPhone owners holding out hope that OS 3.2 would bring some of these fancy new iPad
spoils to their devices might be in for a disappointment, because two of the big ones --
split view and popovers -- are both referred to in Apple's updated human interface
guidelines as "iPad-only." Realistically, this shouldn't come as a surprise; both of these
UI elements were built to shine on larger displays, and it's hard to say how you could
make either one of them work on HVGA -- but it's important for devs to note that heavily
investing in these are definitely going to make it difficult to make their apps compatible

across all iPhone O S-powered devices. Considering that iPhones will almost certainly
continue to dominate iPads for sales volume, we know how we'd be developing.
In other news, running the updated iPhone simulator in iPad mode gives you the option to
take photos, which doesn't make a heck of a lot of sense considering that it doesn't have a
camera. There are plenty of plausible explanations for the muck-up, but our guess is that
Apple's left the vestigial capability on-board since the framework's already in place for
the iPhone and there could very well be iPads down the road that have a cam (or two).
Follow the break for a shot of the iPad's Address Book imploring you to take a photo --
and savor it, since it's probably the closest you'll actually get to snapping a shot on the
device any time soon.
[Thanks, iPhone Dev and Eric]
