I am an economist specialized in urban development and economic geography. I focus my research and advising activities on urban and regional economic development in general, and on knowledge and innovation strategies in particular. I am interested in the determinants of long-term economic development of places and the role of institutions and policy. I carried out several international comparative studies on such issues. My current research interests focus on the geography of knowledge and innovation, socio-technical transitions in cities and smart city policies. (see also my website at www.luismcmcarvalho.com)
