MOBILE WALLETS FLOURISH IN ASIA-PACIFIC
Asia-Pacific is the world leader when it comes to the adoption of mobile payments.
In 2019, more than one in two smartphone users in this region are expected to
make contactless mobile payments in-store, according to a forecast cited in the
yStats.com report. The number of mobile wallets in China from providers such as
Alipay and WeChat Pay surpassed half a billion people in 2017 and is projected to
remain on the growth path through 2022. Another fast growing market for mobile
wallets in Asia-Pacific is India. The value of mobile wallet transactions is projected
to more than double between 2018 and 2021, benefitting the top competitors such
as Paytm and PhonePe.
Japan has lagged behind the countries such as China, India and South Korea in
terms of mobile wallet adoption, but has shown some improvement in the recent
years, as reported in yStats.com’s publication. The number of QR-based wallet
users in this country is projected to see strong double-digit growth rates through
2021 and companies such as Rakuten, LINE, SoftBank and Yahoo! Japan have
already embarked on this emerging opportunity. Furthermore, the ASEAN
countries are also gradually adopting digital wallets. The trend is championed by
popular ride-hailing services such as GrabTaxi and GO-JEK, which both launched
their own mobile wallets.

Profile Coverage
 The current profile is devoted to the leading mobile wallets in
Asia-Pacific. For the purpose of this report, a mobile wallet is defined as a
software solution that enables consumers to store payment credentials,
such as credit or debit card information, and use the stored credentials to
pay digitally for transactions made in-store or online, to make peer-to-
peer transfers or pay for public transit services.
Profile Structure
 This report is structured as described below.
 First, a section covering market trends related to mobile wallets
in Asia-Pacific is presented, including facts and figures on mobile payment
adoption, mobile payment transaction growth and projections. The charts
are grouped by countries, with the countries presented in the order of
descending E-Commerce sales. The following types of information are
included, where available: mobile payment user penetration and number,
proximity mobile payment users, mobile payment transaction value, top
mobile payment services used. The rankings of services are based on
consumer surveys, industry estimates and other published information.
Not all of these types of information are included for each of the countries
due to varying data availability.
 The next section contains profiles of ten mobile wallets selected
as the leading solutions in Asia-Pacific’s major markets based on the market
information cited in the first section. Each of the wallets originates from the
Asia-Pacific region and occupies one of the top ranks in the following
markets: China, Japan, South Korea, India and Southeast Asia. International
mobile wallets operated by companies based in other regions, such as
Apple Pay, were not included in the profiles.
 The profiles are grouped by country and presented in the order
of their ranking in consumer surveys or transaction estimates, depending
on availability. Each profile contains a general overview of the mobile
wallet. They include information about the launch date, a brief service
description, availability, information about revenue and transaction
volume, and a digest of recent important news.

In 2019, more than one in two smartphone users in this region are expected to make contactless mobile payments in-store, according to a forecast cited in the yStats.com report. The number of mobile wallets in China from providers such as Alipay and WeChat Pay surpassed half a billion people in 2017 and is projected to remain on the growth path through 2022. Another fast growing market for mobile wallets in Asia-Pacific is India. METHODOLOGY OF OUR ASIA-PACIFIC TOP 10 MOBILE WALLET PROFILES 2019 Profile Coverage  The current profile is devoted to the leading mobile wallets in Asia-Pacific. For the purpose of this report, a mobile wallet is defined as a software solution that enables consumers to store payment credentials, such as credit or debit card information, and use the stored credentials to pay digitally for transactions made in-store or online, to make peer-to- peer transfers or pay for public transit services. Profile Structure  This report is structured as described below.  First, a section covering market trends related to mobile wallets in Asia-Pacific is presented, including facts and figures on mobile payment adoption, mobile payment transaction growth and projections. The charts are grouped by countries, with the countries presented in the order of descending E-Commerce sales. The following types of information are included, where available: mobile payment user penetration and number, proximity mobile payment users, mobile payment transaction value, top mobile payment services used. The rankings of services are based on consumer surveys, industry estimates and other published information. Not all of these types of information are included for each of the countries due to varying data availability.  The next section contains profiles of ten mobile wallets selected as the leading solutions in Asia-Pacific’s major markets based on the market information cited in the first section. Each of the wallets originates from the Asia-Pacific region and occupies one of the top ranks in the following markets: China, Japan, South Korea, India and Southeast Asia. International mobile wallets operated by companies based in other regions, such as Apple Pay, were not included in the profiles.  The profiles are grouped by country and presented in the order of their ranking in consumer surveys or transaction estimates, depending on availability. Each profile contains a general overview of the mobile wallet. They include information about the launch date, a brief service description, availability, information about revenue and transaction volume, and a digest of recent important news.
