Dr Sanjana Hattotuwa did his doctoral research at the University of Otago on the intersection of social media, political communication, propaganda, and information disorders in Sri Lanka, including how New Zealand's Christchurch 2019 March Terror event was represented on Twitter. He specialises in digital security for journalists, online advocacy, social media activism, and social media communications strategy. Over the past two decades, he has worked across South and Southeast Asia, North Africa, the US, Europe, and the Balkans.
