Roadmap to Membership of RICS - Pathways and Routes
Christmas tree components - By Yasir Albeatiy
1. Swab Valve: The topmost valve on a Christmas tree that provides vertical access to
the wellbore.
Tree Cap: is often installed on the top of the Christmas tree, lift thread in the body.
The top plug of the tree cap has a thread for mounting a pressure gauge to measure
well pressure. The Tree Caps provide access to wellhead for service and monitoring.
2. Lower and upper master valves: A valve located on the Christmas tree that
controls all flow from the wellbore. A correctly functioning master valve is so
important that two master valves are fitted to most Christmas trees. The upper master
valve is used on a routine basis, with the lower master valve providing backup or
contingency function in the event that the normal service valve is leaking and needs
replacement.
Tubing head adapter: Equipment used to adapt the uppermost connection of the
tubing head to the lowermost section of the tree.
Production wing valve: A valve located on the side of a Christmas tree or temporary
surface flow equipment, such as may be used for a drillstem test. A flowing wing
valve is used to control and isolate hydrocarbon flowing to the pipelines that going
to the productions facilities.
Kill wing valve: A valve located on the opposite side of the Production wing valve,
kill wing valve is available for treatment or well-control purposes like injection of
fluids such as corrosion inhibitors or methanol to prevent hydrate formation.
