3. Character & Personality: Invisible but fundamental Character and personality are related attributes of being. Although personality is used to indicate specific behavioural traits, personality itself is inherent to being alive. Character is the manifestation of these traits. Therefore, we understand ourselves and others through character. Food for Though “ Watch your thoughts, for they become words. Watch your words, for they become actions. Watch your actions, for they become habits. Watch your habits, for they become character. Watch your character, for it becomes your destiny.” [Roy Croft] Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, ambition inspired, and success achieved [Helen Keller] Character is like a tree and reputation like a shadow. The shadow is what we think of it; the tree is the real thing [Abraham Lincoln]
4. Beliefs and Values What do you believe and value in life? Beliefs are the sentences that people generally consider to be true, usually without actual proof. They are the assumptions we make about others, about ourselves and about how we expect things to be; what we think is really true and what are the likely consequences that will follow from our behaviour. Our beliefs grow over time from our experiences, what we see, hear and read about. 'You will believe it when you see it' or 'You will see it when you believe it" Our values steam from our beliefs. Our values are true and important to us and are made up of concepts like honesty, loyalty, sustainability, equality, integrity, openness and many others. Values reflect a person’s sense of right and wrong. They are the main drivers of how people behave and how organisations are governed.
5. The importance of Values Strong foundation : values are our guiding principles in life. They help us answer questions of what is important to us or our business. The foundation created by values defines a method of living our life in relation to what matters to us the most. Via values the purpose of life is discovered. Prioritisation : values are priorities that define how time is spent. Prioritising values means clear and consistent course of actions towards the 'best' in life. Although you might never achieve 'best', knowing your values and acting upon them will definitely result in 'better'. Decision making - Judging : Values are drivers of our way of thinking and behaviour. Our values tell us what is good and bad, right and wrong and the musts and can'ts of life. Values thus help us throughout our decision making process to choose those alternatives that are aligned with our principles in life and take the final decision intelligently. Explore and validate your values in the pursue of achieving a sustainable and 'best' life style. W. Clement Stone (known as Mr Positive Mental Attitude) sums up the importance of doing the right thing in his following quote: “ Have the courage to say no. Have the courage to face the truth. Do the right because it is right. These are the magic keys to living your life with integrity.”
6. Self-discipline What is self-discipline? Personal excellence and increased productivity, cannot be realised without self-discipline. Self-discipline is the mental attribute that gives us the ability to control our impulses, emotions, desires and behaviour. It's about making our own deliberate choices without following our emotions. It's about overcoming obstacles and discomfort and have to energy to carry on until our goals are realised. How to develop it? Practice to say NO : do what you know to be right and aligned with your values and resist some of your feelings and urges. Remember to always think about the consequences before you act. Visualise the rewards : by visualising the outcomes and the benefits you will enjoy you achieve emotional satisfaction. Visualisation acts as a reminder of the steps required to take you there and helps you discipline yourself not to satisfy our preference for what is easy, over that which is hard. Take small steps : be patient all the way - nothing changes overnight except that passage of time. The rewards Higher tolerance with emotions & obstacles Diverts your focus into long-term Increased self-confidence Stretched goal setting More productive Makes you a winner
