2. What is Athletics?
Athletics is an exclusive collection of sporting events
that involve
competitive running, jumping, throwing, and walking.
The most common types of athletics competitions
are track and field, road running, cross country
running, and race walking. The simplicity of the
competitions, and the lack of a need for expensive
equipment, makes athletics one of the most commonly
competed sports in the world. Athletics is mostly an
individual sport, with the exception of relay races and
competitions which combine athletes' performances for a
team score, such as cross country.
4. History of Athletics
Organized athletics are traced back to the Ancient
Olympic Games from 776 BC, and most modern
events are conducted by the member clubs of
the International Association of Athletics
Federations. The athletics meeting forms the
backbone of the modern Summer Olympics, and
other leading international meetings include
the IAAF World Championships and World Indoor
Championships, and athletes with a physical
disability compete at the Summer Paralympics and
the IPC Athletics World Championships.
5. Track and Field
Track and field competitions emerged in the late
19th century and were typically contested between
athletes who were representing rivaleducational
institutions, military organisations and sports
clubs.[15] Participating athletes may compete in one
or more events, according to their specialities. Men
and women compete separately. Track and field
comes in both indoor and outdoor formats, with
most indoor competitions occurring in winter, while
outdoor events are mostly held in summer. The sport
is defined by the venue in which the competitions are
held – the track and field stadium.
6. Middle-distance running
events are track races longer than sprints, up to
3000 metres. The standard middle distances are
the 800 metres, 1500 metres and mile run, although
the3000 metres may also be classified as a middle-
distance event.[1] The 880 yard run, or half mile, was
the forebear to the 800 m distance and it has its
roots in competitions in the United Kingdom in the
1830s.[2] The 1500 m came about as a result of
running three laps of a 500 m track, which was
commonplace in continental Europe in the 20th
century.[3]
7. Events in Middle-distance running
800 m-The 800 metre race is a common track
running event. It is the shortest common middle
distance track event. The 800 metres is run over two
laps of the track (400 metre track) and has always
been an Olympic event. During indoor track season
the event is usually run on a 200 metre
track, therefore requiring four laps. 800 m is almost
exactly half a mile.
8. Events in Middle-distance running
1500 m-The 1,500-metre run (approximately 0.93
miles) is the foremost middle distance track
event in athletics. The distance has been contested at
the Summer Olympics since 1896 and the World
Championships in Athletics since 1983.
9. Events in Middle-distance running
3000 m-The 3000 metres is a track running event
(colloquially known as "3k") where 7.5 laps are completed
around an outdoor 400 meter track or 15 laps around an
indoor track. It is debatable whether the 3000m is classified
as a middle distance or long distance event. At the highest
level of competition, 3000m pace is more comparable to
5000m pace than to 1500m pace, arguing the case for it being
a long distance event. The world record performance for
3000m equates to a pace of 59 seconds per 400m, which is
closer to 61 seconds for 5000m than 55 seconds for 1500m.
Despite this, the 3000m does require some anaerobic
conditioning and the athlete needs to develop a high tolerance
to lactic acid, as does the 1500m. Thus, the 3000m demands a
balance of aerobic endurance in the 5000m and lactic acid
tolerance in the 1500m.
