THE DEVELOPING
BRAIN
Neural networks are
like developing brains in
human children, in that
they need to learn infor-
mation rather than sim-
ply being programmed
to perform a specific
task. This learning can
be supervised, unsuper-
vised or reinforced.

NEURONS AND
PERCEPTRONS
Neurons are the human
brain’s basic units. In
artificial neural networ-
ks, these units are called
perceptrons. Each per-
ceptron is joined together
in a large mesh network
and is capable of accom-
plishing simple signal
processing.
MACHINE
LEARNING
A perceptron network
is capable of learning
on what is called a deep
level, just like the hu-
man brain. Machines
with neural networks are
capable of analysing tra-
ining examples to learn
how to perform a certain
task, such as recognising
objects or patterns based
on the available data.
