  1. So what is the large scale structure of the Universe? Estructura a granescala What does that even mean? Let’s break it down.
  2. Lets start with the Universe. What is the definition of the word Universe? The Universe is not the Solar System. The Universe is not the galaxy. This would be like saying, what is the definition of the World, and you drew me a picture of King City, or of this building. That is not the whole world. It is PART of the world, but it is not the whole world.EVERYTHING. The Universe is everything we know about that exists. That includes all of us, and King City, and the Solar System, and millions, perhaps billions of other solar systems, and our galaxy, and billions of other galaxies.
  3. What does structure mean? Estructura. The dictionary definition is the arrangement of and relations between the parts or elements of something complex…so basically it is how something is arranged….so for example, what is the structure of a building? Foundation at the bottom, support beams, ceiling , walls, etc. What is the structure of a company? CEO or president up at the top, executives under the CEO, engineers and marketing under that, maybe mail room workers, factory workers, retail workers at the bottom. What is the structure of a school district? You have the superintendent, and then under him or her there are principals, and each principal controls a school, with various teachers, and each teacher is in charge of a class. These are examples of how something is arranged, or organized.
  4. Large scale. Agranescala. What does this mean? It’s a little easier to figure out what the Earth looks like on the largest scales, because we can actually get off of it, and take pictures of it. The Universe is a little more complicated, so in order to study the large scale structure of the Universe, we take pictures of every galaxy we can see, and we map out where they are, and also how far away they are, in order to get a 3-D image of what the Universe looks like.
  5. This is what the Universe looks like on the largest scales.Clues simulation.
  6. We will talk about dark energy later. For now, notice how much more Dark Matter there is than light matter. We don’t know what this stuff is! We can measure it though, and we can also model it.
  7. When I say expanding, I mean like this balloon (show balloon with sharpie marks). Notice how all the sharpie marks are expanding away from one another uniformly.
  8. On the left we can see a simulation of the large scale distribution of dark matter. On the right we see actual data of galaxies, with filaments and voids.
  9. Some local galaxy clusters. Don’t confuse the Virgo cluster with the Virgo Supercluster!!!!! All of these clusters are inside the Virgo Supercluster.
