Going on to Perfection
THE MATURE CHRISTIAN
Do you know where on this chart you are?
Babe/ Child Adult / MatureChristian Growth
Scripture considerations
2 As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:
3 If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious. (1Pe 2:2-3 KJV)
1Co 3:2 I have fed you with milk, and not with meat: for hitherto ye were not able to bear it, neither
yet now are ye able.
Heb 5:12 For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again
which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and
not of strong meat.
1Co 14:20 Brethren, be not children in understanding: howbeit in malice be ye children, but in
understanding be men.
12 For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which
be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not
of strong meat.
13 For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe.
14 But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have
their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.
(Heb 5:12-14 KJV)
KJV Hebrews 6:1
Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying
again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God,
2 Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of
eternal judgment.
3 And this will we do, if God permit.
4 For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and
were made partakers of the Holy Ghost,
5 And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come,
6 If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the
Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame.
Lk 8:9-17
9 And his disciples asked him, saying, What might this parable be?
10 And he said, Unto you it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God: but to others in
parables; that seeing they might not see, and hearing they might not understand.
11 Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God.
12 Those by the way side are they that hear; then cometh the devil, and taketh away the word out of their
hearts, lest they should believe and be saved.
13 They on the rock are they, which, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root,
which for a while believe, and in time of temptation fall away.
14 And that which fell among thorns are they, which, when they have heard, go forth, and are choked
with cares and riches and pleasures of this life, and bring no fruit to perfection.
15 But that on the good ground are they, which in an honest and good heart, having heard the word, keep
it, and bring forth fruit with patience. (…to perfection.)
16 No man, when he hath lighted a candle, covereth it with a vessel, or putteth it under a bed; but setteth
it on a candlestick, that they which enter in may see the light.
17 For nothing is secret, that shall not be made manifest; neither any thing hid, that shall not be known
and come abroad.
Is it Important to us that we know?
* 5 Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own
selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates?
6 But I trust that ye shall know that we are not reprobates.
(2Co 13:5-6 KJV)
24 Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may
obtain.
25 And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a
corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible.
26 I therefore so run, not as uncertainly; so fight I, not as one that beateth the air:
27 But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have
preached to others, I myself should be a castaway. (1Co 9:24-27 KJV)
Is it important to Jesus where we are?, and
Why?
5 I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth
forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.
6 If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them,
and cast them into the fire, and they are burned.
7 If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done
unto you.
8 Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples.
(Joh 15:5-8 KJV)
Joh 15:16 Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go
and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the
Father in my name, he may give it you.
Phi 1:11 Being filled with the fruits of righteousness, which are by Jesus Christ, unto the glory
and praise of God.
5 For the hope which is laid up for you in heaven, whereof ye heard before in the word of the
truth of the gospel;
6 Which is come unto you, as it is in all the world; and bringeth forth fruit, as it doth also in you,
since the day ye heard of it, and knew the grace of God in truth: (Col 1:5-6 KJV)
Col 1:10 That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good
work, and increasing in the knowledge of God;
Where do we start?
What has God done for us.
What has God done in us.
What can God accomplish through us.
What God cannot do for us.
What has God done for us.
16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him
should not perish, but have everlasting life.
17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him
might be saved. (Joh 3:16-17 KJV)
1Jo 4:9 In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten
Son into the world, that we might live through him.
Joh 6:40 And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth
on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.
Rom 5:8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for
us.
Rom 8:32 He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him
also freely give us all things?
1Jo 4:10 Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the
propitiation for our sins.
What has God done in us.
4 But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us,
5 Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)
6 And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus: (Eph
2:4-6 KJV)
Eph 2:1 And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;
Col 2:13 And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened
together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses;
Joh 5:24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me,
hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.
Col 2:12 Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the
operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.
4 But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared,
5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the
washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;
6 Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour;
7 That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.
(Tit 3:4-7 KJV)
17 That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love,
18 May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and
height;
19 And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the
fulness of God. (Eph 3:17-19 KJV)
KJV Ephesians 2:1 And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;
2 Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of
the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:
3 Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the
desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.
4 But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us,
5 Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)
6 And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:
7 That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us
through Christ Jesus.
8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.
10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before
ordained that we should walk in them. (Eph 2:1-10 KJV)
5 Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves,
how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates?
6 But I trust that ye shall know that we are not reprobates.
7 Now I pray to God that ye do no evil; not that we should appear approved, but that ye should do that
which is honest, though we be as reprobates.
8 For we can do nothing against the truth, but for the truth.
9 For we are glad, when we are weak, and ye are strong: and this also we wish, even your perfection.
10 Therefore I write these things being absent, lest being present I should use sharpness, according to the
power which the Lord hath given me to edification, and not to destruction.
11 Finally, brethren, farewell. Be perfect, be of good comfort, be of one mind, live in peace; and the God of
love and peace shall be with you.
(2Co 13:5-11 KJV)
What can God accomplish through us.
12 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and
greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father. (Joh 14:12 KJV)
20 Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think,
according to the power that worketh in us, (Eph 3:20 KJV)
6 Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it
until the day of Jesus Christ: (Phi 1:6 KJV)
7 By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to
the saving of his house; by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the
righteousness which is by faith.
8 By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an
inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went.
9 By faith he sojourned in the land of promise, as in a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles with
Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise:
10 For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God.
11 Through faith also Sara herself received strength to conceive seed, and was delivered of a child
when she was past age, because she judged him faithful who had promised. (Heb 11:7-11 KJV)
24 By faith Moses, when he was come to years, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter;
25 Choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a
season;
26 Esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt: for he had respect
unto the recompence of the reward.
27 By faith he forsook Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king: for he endured, as seeing him who is
invisible.
28 Through faith he kept the passover, and the sprinkling of blood, lest he that destroyed the
firstborn should touch them.
29 By faith they passed through the Red sea as by dry land: which the Egyptians assaying to do were
drowned. (Heb 11:24-29 KJV)
What God cannot do for us.
20 Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in
to him, and will sup with him, and he with me. (Rev 3:20 KJV)
23 Turn you at my reproof: behold, I will pour out my spirit unto you, I will make known my words
unto you.
24 Because I have called, and ye refused; I have stretched out my hand, and no man regarded;
(Pro 1:23-24 KJV)
51 Ye stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, ye do always resist the Holy Ghost: as your
fathers did, so do ye. (Act 7:51 KJV)
37 O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee,
how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under
her wings, and ye would not!
38 Behold, your house is left unto you desolate. (Mat 23:37-38 KJV)
Maturity

Cultural and religious issues
In Jewish religion, the "becoming a Bar or Bat Mitzvah" (literally "an [agent] who is subject to the law")
refers to the ceremony declaring that a Jewish child is morally and ethically responsible for their
actions, is eligible to be called to read from the Torah, as well as responsibility to abide by the 613 laws
written in the Torah. Traditionally, this ceremony awarded adult legal rights as well as the right to
marry. Similarly, Christian churches (Catholic) hold Confirmation as a rite of passage in early
adolescence. The rite holds fewer practical responsibilities than the Bar/Bat Mitzavah, but carries
ethical and moral consequences.
Psychology/ Mentally:
In psychology, maturity is the ability to respond to the environment in an appropriate manner.
Maturity also encompasses being aware of the correct time and place to behave and knowing
when to act, according to the circumstances and the culture of the society one lives in.[1] Adult
development and maturity theories include the purpose in life concept, in which maturity
emphasizes a clear comprehension of life's purpose, directedness, and intentionality, which
contributes to the feeling that life is meaningful.[2]

Maturity as Growth
18 But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both
now and for ever. Amen. (2Pe 3:18 KJV)
Bible study / Relationships / Prayer / Sabbath reform
Commitment to Evangelism (personal) / Judgement (reasoning) /
Overcoming (Sin, Sinners and Satan)
2Pe 2:20 For if after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of
the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein, and overcome, the latter
end is worse with them than the beginning.
Col 1:10 That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good
work, and increasing in the knowledge of God;
2Pe 1:8 For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren
nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Unwavering and Steadfast

Marks/ Evidence of Our Maturity
Quality of conversation with others
12 Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation,
in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.
13 Till I come, give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine. (1Ti 4:12-13 KJV)
16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in
psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.
17 And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God
and the Father by him. (Col 3:16-17 KJV)
Col 1:28 Whom we preach, warning every man, and teaching every man in all wisdom; that we may
present every man perfect in Christ Jesus:
18 I desired Titus, and with him I sent a brother. Did Titus make a gain of you? walked we not in
the same spirit? walked we not in the same steps?
19 Again, think ye that we excuse ourselves unto you? we speak before God in Christ: but we do
all things, dearly beloved, for your edifying.
20 For I fear, lest, when I come, I shall not find you such as I would, and that I shall be found unto
you such as ye would not: lest there be debates, envyings, wraths, strifes, backbitings,
whisperings, swellings, tumults:
(2Co 12:18-20 KJV)
Setting oneself as an example (Behavior) for others good.
Tit 2:7 In all things shewing thyself a pattern of good works: in doctrine shewing uncorruptness,
gravity, sincerity,
Phi 3:17 Brethren, be followers together of me, and mark them which walk so as ye have us for
an ensample.
1Pe 2:12 Having your conversation honest among the Gentiles: that, whereas they speak against
you as evildoers, they may by your good works, which they shall behold, glorify God in the day of
visitation.
Forgiveness
3 Take heed to yourselves: If thy brother trespass against thee, rebuke him; and if he repent, forgive
him.
4 And if he trespass against thee seven times in a day, and seven times in a day turn again to thee,
saying, I repent; thou shalt forgive him.
5 And the apostles said unto the Lord, Increase our faith. (Luk 17:3-5 KJV)
25 And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought against any: that your Father also which is in
heaven may forgive you your trespasses.
26 But if ye do not forgive, neither will your Father which is in heaven forgive your trespasses.
(Mar 11:25-26 KJV)
Eph 4:32 And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for
Christ's sake hath forgiven you.
12 Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness,
humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering;
13 Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any:
even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.
14 And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness (Col 3:12-14 KJV)
4 For out of much affliction and anguish of heart I wrote unto you with many tears; not that ye
should be grieved, but that ye might know the love which I have more abundantly unto you.
5 But if any have caused grief, he hath not grieved me, but in part: that I may not overcharge you all.
6 Sufficient to such a man is this punishment, which was inflicted of many.
7 So that contrariwise ye ought rather to forgive him, and comfort him, lest perhaps such a one
should be swallowed up with overmuch sorrow.
8 Wherefore I beseech you that ye would confirm your love toward him.
9 For to this end also did I write, that I might know the proof of you, whether ye be obedient in all
things.
10 To whom ye forgive any thing, I forgive also: for if I forgave any thing, to whom I forgave it, for
your sakes forgave I it in the person of Christ;
11 Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices. (2Co 2:4-11 KJV)
Friendship/ Relationship
Pro 17:17 A friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.
Pro 27:9 Ointment and perfume rejoice the heart: so doth the sweetness of a man's friend by
hearty counsel.
24 A man that hath friends must shew himself friendly: and there is a friend that sticketh closer
than a brother. (Pro 18:24 KJV)
5 Open rebuke is better than secret love.
6 Faithful are the wounds of a friend; but the kisses of an enemy are deceitful.
(Pro 27:5-6 KJV)
12 This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you.
13 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.
14 Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you. (Joh 15:12-14 KJV)
Dangers in Friendship/ Relationship?
33 Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners. (1Co 15:33 KJV)
Eph 5:6 Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath
of God upon the children of disobedience.
Pro 9:6 Forsake the foolish, and live; and go in the way of understanding.
Pro 13:20 He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be
destroyed.
Pro 22:24 Make no friendship with an angry man; and with a furious man thou shalt not go:
Pro 22:25 Lest thou learn his ways, and get a snare to thy soul.
Thoughts/ Reason/ Judgement
7 For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; but his heart is not with
thee. (Pro 23:7 KJV)
5 A faithful witness will not lie: but a false witness will utter lies.
6 A scorner seeketh wisdom, and findeth it not: but knowledge is easy unto him that
understandeth.
7 Go from the presence of a foolish man, when thou perceivest not in him the lips of knowledge.
(Pro 14:5-7 KJV)
Mat 12:35 A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an
evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things.
Avoiding wrong thoughts
20 My son, attend to my words; incline thine ear unto my sayings.
21 Let them not depart from thine eyes; keep them in the midst of thine heart.
22 For they are life unto those that find them, and health to all their flesh.
23 Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.
24 Put away from thee a froward mouth, and perverse lips put far from thee.
25 Let thine eyes look right on, and let thine eyelids look straight before thee.
26 Ponder the path of thy feet, and let all thy ways be established.
27 Turn not to the right hand nor to the left: remove thy foot from evil.
(Pro 4:20-27 KJV)
Some wrong thoughts and Emotions
Anger (Hasty/ Rash)
Strife/ conflict
Paranoia
Fretfulness
Self-esteem
Offence
Anger
Anger or wrath is an intense emotional response. It is an emotion that involves a strong
uncomfortable and hostile response to a perceived provocation, hurt or threat.[1] Anger can
occur when a person feels their personal boundaries are being or are going to be violated. Some
have a learned tendency to react to anger through retaliation as a way of coping. Raymond
Novaco of University of California Irvine, who since 1975 has published a plethora of literature
on the subject, stratified anger into three modalities: cognitive (appraisals), somatic-
affective (tension and agitations), and behavioral (withdrawal and antagonism).[2] William
DeFoore, an anger-management writer, described anger as a pressure cooker: we can only apply
pressure against our anger for a certain amount of time until it explodes.[3]
Anger is an emotional reaction that impacts the body. A person experiencing anger will also
experience physical conditions, such as increased heart rate, elevated blood pressure, and
increased levels of adrenaline and noradrenaline.[4]
Scriptural consideration (Anger)
5 Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness,
inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry:
6 For which things' sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience:
7 In the which ye also walked some time, when ye lived in them.
8 But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out
of your mouth.
9 Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds;
10 And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the i (Col 3:5-10 KJV)
22 That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to
the deceitful lusts;
23 And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;
24 And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true
holiness.
25 Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are
members one of another.
26 Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath:
27 Neither give place to the devil. (Eph 4:22-27 KJV)
29 He that is slow to wrath is of great understanding: but he that is hasty of spirit exalteth folly.
(Pro 14:29 KJV)
Pro 14:17 He that is soon angry dealeth foolishly: and a man of wicked devices is hated.
Pro 16:32 He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty; and he that ruleth his spirit than he
that taketh a city.
Ecc 7:9 Be not hasty in thy spirit to be angry: for anger resteth in the bosom of fools.
Pro 19:11 The discretion of a man deferreth his anger; and it is his glory to pass over a
transgression.
Jam 1:19 Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to
wrath:
Scriptural consideration (Strife)
13 Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him shew out of a good
conversation his works with meekness of wisdom.
14 But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth.
15 This wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish.
16 For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work.
(Jam 3:13-16 KJV)
3 It is an honour for a man to cease from strife: but every fool will be meddling. (Pro 20:3 KJV)
Pro 25:8 Go not forth hastily to strive, lest thou know not what to do in the end thereof, when thy
neighbour hath put thee to shame.
Gen 13:8 And Abram said unto Lot, Let there be no strife, I pray thee, between me and thee, and
between my herdmen and thy herdmen; for we be brethren.
23 But foolish and unlearned questions avoid, knowing that they do gender strifes.
24 And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient,
25 In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them
repentance to the acknowledging of the truth;
26 And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him
at his will. (2Ti 2:23-26 KJV)
3 If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord
Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness;
4 He is proud, knowing nothing, but doting about questions and strifes of words, whereof
cometh envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings, (1Ti 6:3-4 KJV)
Paranoia
Paranoia involves intense anxious or fearful feelings and thoughts often related to persecution,
threat, or conspiracy. Paranoia occurs in many mental disorders, but is most often present in
psychotic disorders. Paranoia can become delusions, when irrational thoughts and beliefs
become so fixed that nothing (including contrary evidence) can convince a person that what
they think or feel is not true
Self-Esteem
Low self-esteem
10 And Moses said unto the LORD, O my Lord, I am not eloquent, neither heretofore, nor since
thou hast spoken unto thy servant: but I am slow of speech, and of a slow tongue.
11 And the LORD said unto him, Who hath made man's mouth? or who maketh the dumb, or
deaf, or the seeing, or the blind? have not I the LORD?
12 Now therefore go, and I will be with thy mouth, and teach thee what thou shalt say.
13 And he said, O my Lord, send, I pray thee, by the hand of him whom thou wilt send. (Exo 4:10-
13 KJV)
Philippians 4:13 - I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.
Avoiding Pride
3 For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more
highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure
of faith.
4 For as we have many members in one body, and all members have not the same office:
5 So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another.
6 Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, whether prophecy, let us prophesy
according to the proportion of faith;
7 Or ministry, let us wait on our ministering: or he that teacheth, on teaching;
8 Or he that exhorteth, on exhortation: he that giveth, let him do it with simplicity; he that ruleth, with
diligence; he that sheweth mercy, with cheerfulness.
9 Let love be without dissimulation. Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good.
10 Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another; (Rom 12:3-
10 KJV)
19 Thou wilt say then, The branches were broken off, that I might be graffed in.
20 Well; because of unbelief they were broken off, and thou standest by faith. Be not
highminded, but fear: (Rom 11:19-20 KJV)
15 Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep.
16 Be of the same mind one toward another. Mind not high things, but condescend to men of
low estate. Be not wise in your own conceits.
17 Recompense to no man evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of all men.
18 If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men.
(Rom 12:15-18 KJV)
Those disciples were men "subject to like passions as we are." James
5:17. They had the same battle with sin to fight. They needed the same
grace, in order to live a holy life.
Even John, the beloved disciple, the one who most fully reflected the
likeness of the Saviour, did not naturally possess that loveliness of
character. He was not only self-assertive and ambitious for honor, but
impetuous, and resentful under injuries. But as the character of the
Divine One was manifested to him, he saw his own deficiency and was
humbled by the knowledge. The strength and patience, the power and
tenderness, the majesty and meekness, that he beheld in the daily life
of the Son of God, filled his soul with admiration and love. Day by day
his heart was drawn out toward Christ, until he lost sight of self in love
for his Master. His resentful, ambitious temper was yielded to the
molding power of Christ. The regenerating influence of the Holy Spirit
renewed his heart. The power of the love of Christ wrought a
transformation of character. This is the sure result of union with Jesus.
When Christ abides in the heart, the whole nature is transformed.
Christ's Spirit, His love, softens the heart, subdues the soul, and raises
the thoughts and desires toward God and heaven.
Steps to Christ
Chapter 8: Growing Up Into Christ
End of Part 1
Eph 4:15 But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head,
even Christ:

Going on to perfection: the mature christian

  • 1. Going on to Perfection THE MATURE CHRISTIAN
  • 2. Do you know where on this chart you are? Babe/ Child Adult / MatureChristian Growth
  • 3. Scripture considerations 2 As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby: 3 If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious. (1Pe 2:2-3 KJV) 1Co 3:2 I have fed you with milk, and not with meat: for hitherto ye were not able to bear it, neither yet now are ye able. Heb 5:12 For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat. 1Co 14:20 Brethren, be not children in understanding: howbeit in malice be ye children, but in understanding be men.
  • 4. 12 For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat. 13 For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe. 14 But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil. (Heb 5:12-14 KJV)
  • 5. KJV Hebrews 6:1 Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God, 2 Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment. 3 And this will we do, if God permit. 4 For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost, 5 And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come, 6 If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame.
  • 6. Lk 8:9-17 9 And his disciples asked him, saying, What might this parable be? 10 And he said, Unto you it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God: but to others in parables; that seeing they might not see, and hearing they might not understand. 11 Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. 12 Those by the way side are they that hear; then cometh the devil, and taketh away the word out of their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved. 13 They on the rock are they, which, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, which for a while believe, and in time of temptation fall away. 14 And that which fell among thorns are they, which, when they have heard, go forth, and are choked with cares and riches and pleasures of this life, and bring no fruit to perfection. 15 But that on the good ground are they, which in an honest and good heart, having heard the word, keep it, and bring forth fruit with patience. (…to perfection.) 16 No man, when he hath lighted a candle, covereth it with a vessel, or putteth it under a bed; but setteth it on a candlestick, that they which enter in may see the light. 17 For nothing is secret, that shall not be made manifest; neither any thing hid, that shall not be known and come abroad.
  • 7. Is it Important to us that we know? * 5 Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates? 6 But I trust that ye shall know that we are not reprobates. (2Co 13:5-6 KJV) 24 Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain. 25 And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible. 26 I therefore so run, not as uncertainly; so fight I, not as one that beateth the air: 27 But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway. (1Co 9:24-27 KJV)
  • 8. Is it important to Jesus where we are?, and Why? 5 I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing. 6 If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned. 7 If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you. 8 Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples. (Joh 15:5-8 KJV)
  • 9. Joh 15:16 Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you. Phi 1:11 Being filled with the fruits of righteousness, which are by Jesus Christ, unto the glory and praise of God. 5 For the hope which is laid up for you in heaven, whereof ye heard before in the word of the truth of the gospel; 6 Which is come unto you, as it is in all the world; and bringeth forth fruit, as it doth also in you, since the day ye heard of it, and knew the grace of God in truth: (Col 1:5-6 KJV) Col 1:10 That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God;
  • 10. Where do we start? What has God done for us. What has God done in us. What can God accomplish through us. What God cannot do for us.
  • 11. What has God done for us. 16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. (Joh 3:16-17 KJV) 1Jo 4:9 In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him. Joh 6:40 And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day. Rom 5:8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Rom 8:32 He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things? 1Jo 4:10 Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.
  • 12. What has God done in us. 4 But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, 5 Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;) 6 And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus: (Eph 2:4-6 KJV) Eph 2:1 And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins; Col 2:13 And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses; Joh 5:24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life. Col 2:12 Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.
  • 13. 4 But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared, 5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; 6 Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour; 7 That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life. (Tit 3:4-7 KJV) 17 That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, 18 May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; 19 And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God. (Eph 3:17-19 KJV)
  • 14. KJV Ephesians 2:1 And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins; 2 Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience: 3 Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others. 4 But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, 5 Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;) 6 And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus: 7 That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus. 8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9 Not of works, lest any man should boast. 10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them. (Eph 2:1-10 KJV)
  • 15. 5 Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates? 6 But I trust that ye shall know that we are not reprobates. 7 Now I pray to God that ye do no evil; not that we should appear approved, but that ye should do that which is honest, though we be as reprobates. 8 For we can do nothing against the truth, but for the truth. 9 For we are glad, when we are weak, and ye are strong: and this also we wish, even your perfection. 10 Therefore I write these things being absent, lest being present I should use sharpness, according to the power which the Lord hath given me to edification, and not to destruction. 11 Finally, brethren, farewell. Be perfect, be of good comfort, be of one mind, live in peace; and the God of love and peace shall be with you. (2Co 13:5-11 KJV)

  • 42. Anger Anger or wrath is an intense emotional response. It is an emotion that involves a strong uncomfortable and hostile response to a perceived provocation, hurt or threat.[1] Anger can occur when a person feels their personal boundaries are being or are going to be violated. Some have a learned tendency to react to anger through retaliation as a way of coping. Raymond Novaco of University of California Irvine, who since 1975 has published a plethora of literature on the subject, stratified anger into three modalities: cognitive (appraisals), somatic- affective (tension and agitations), and behavioral (withdrawal and antagonism).[2] William DeFoore, an anger-management writer, described anger as a pressure cooker: we can only apply pressure against our anger for a certain amount of time until it explodes.[3] Anger is an emotional reaction that impacts the body. A person experiencing anger will also experience physical conditions, such as increased heart rate, elevated blood pressure, and increased levels of adrenaline and noradrenaline.[4]

Scriptural consideration (Anger) 5 Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry: 6 For which things' sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience: 7 In the which ye also walked some time, when ye lived in them. 8 But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth. 9 Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds; 10 And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the i (Col 3:5-10 KJV)
  • 44. 22 That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; 23 And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; 24 And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness. 25 Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another. 26 Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath: 27 Neither give place to the devil. (Eph 4:22-27 KJV)
  • 45. 29 He that is slow to wrath is of great understanding: but he that is hasty of spirit exalteth folly. (Pro 14:29 KJV) Pro 14:17 He that is soon angry dealeth foolishly: and a man of wicked devices is hated. Pro 16:32 He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty; and he that ruleth his spirit than he that taketh a city. Ecc 7:9 Be not hasty in thy spirit to be angry: for anger resteth in the bosom of fools. Pro 19:11 The discretion of a man deferreth his anger; and it is his glory to pass over a transgression. Jam 1:19 Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath:
  • 46. Scriptural consideration (Strife) 13 Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him shew out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom.
  • 47. 3 It is an honour for a man to cease from strife: but every fool will be meddling. (Pro 20:3 KJV) Pro 25:8 Go not forth hastily to strive, lest thou know not what to do in the end thereof, when thy neighbour hath put thee to shame. Gen 13:8 And Abram said unto Lot, Let there be no strife, I pray thee, between me and thee, and between my herdmen and thy herdmen; for we be brethren. 23 But foolish and unlearned questions avoid, knowing that they do gender strifes. 24 And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient, 25 In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth; 26 And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will. Low self-esteem 10 And Moses said unto the LORD, O my Lord, I am not eloquent, neither heretofore, nor since thou hast spoken unto thy servant: but I am slow of speech, and of a slow tongue. 11 And the LORD said unto him, Who hath made man's mouth? or who maketh the dumb, or deaf, or the seeing, or the blind? have not I the LORD? 12 Now therefore go, and I will be with thy mouth, and teach thee what thou shalt say. 13 And he said, O my Lord, send, I pray thee, by the hand of him whom thou wilt send. (Exo 4:10- 13 KJV) Philippians 4:13 - I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.
  • 52. Avoiding Pride 3 For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith. 4 For as we have many members in one body, and all members have not the same office: 5 So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another. 6 Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, whether prophecy, let us prophesy according to the proportion of faith; 7 Or ministry, let us wait on our ministering: or he that teacheth, on teaching; 8 Or he that exhorteth, on exhortation: he that giveth, let him do it with simplicity; he that ruleth, with diligence; he that sheweth mercy, with cheerfulness. 9 Let love be without dissimulation. Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good. 10 Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another; (Rom 12:3- 10 KJV)
  • 53. 19 Thou wilt say then, The branches were broken off, that I might be graffed in. 20 Well; because of unbelief they were broken off, and thou standest by faith. Be not highminded, but fear: (Rom 11:19-20 KJV) 15 Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep. 16 Be of the same mind one toward another. Mind not high things, but condescend to men of low estate. Be not wise in your own conceits. 17 Recompense to no man evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of all men. 18 If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men. (Rom 12:15-18 KJV)
  • 54. Those disciples were men "subject to like passions as we are." James 5:17. They had the same battle with sin to fight. They needed the same grace, in order to live a holy life. Even John, the beloved disciple, the one who most fully reflected the likeness of the Saviour, did not naturally possess that loveliness of character. He was not only self-assertive and ambitious for honor, but impetuous, and resentful under injuries. But as the character of the Divine One was manifested to him, he saw his own deficiency and was humbled by the knowledge. The strength and patience, the power and tenderness, the majesty and meekness, that he beheld in the daily life of the Son of God, filled his soul with admiration and love. Day by day his heart was drawn out toward Christ, until he lost sight of self in love for his Master. His resentful, ambitious temper was yielded to the molding power of Christ. The regenerating influence of the Holy Spirit renewed his heart. The power of the love of Christ wrought a transformation of character. This is the sure result of union with Jesus. When Christ abides in the heart, the whole nature is transformed. Christ's Spirit, His love, softens the heart, subdues the soul, and raises the thoughts and desires toward God and heaven. Steps to Christ Chapter 8: Growing Up Into Christ

Notes de l'éditeur

  1. There are certain fundamental things we need to reflect on as we move on in our Christian walk. Things that are supremely vital to the Christian existence. These keep us in the Faith and alive, gives us our world view and guides in how we must interact with the World. The lost of such knowledge causes us to slide backwards/ back slide losing our purpose as those called to be the light of the world. No longer being that house on a hill that cannot be hid and falling into obscurity and ruin, most times without even knowing it. This is a Great danger and must be avoided. But how? A World View is a comprehensive framework of ideas & attitudes about the world, ourselves, and life,  a system of beliefs What are humans, why we are here, and what is our purpose in life?  What are your goals for life?  When you make decisions about using time — it's the stuff life is made of — what are your values and priorities? *       What can we know, and how?  and with how much certainty?       Does reality include only matter/energy, or is there more?       Some worldview questions are about God:  Can we know whether God exists?  Does God exist?  If yes, what characteristics does God have, and what relationship with the universe?  Have miracles occurred in the past, as claimed in the Bible, and do they occur now?  Are natural events produced and guided by God?  Was the universe self-creating, or did God create it?  Was it totally self-assembling by natural process, or did God sometimes create in miraculous-appearing ways?  Does God communicate with us (mentally and spiritually) in everyday life, and through written revelation, as in the Bible?  What is God's role in history?  Is there a purpose and meaning in history, for each of us individually and for all of us together, or is life just a long string of things happening?  What happens after death?

  20. King Saul is an example of someone who let paranoia take over his life. When Saul realized that young David had captured the hearts of the people of Israel, he became angry and began to keep a suspicious eye on him (1 Samuel 18:6–9). David had made no threatening moves toward Saul, yet Saul’s jealousy turned to paranoia and he began seeking ways to kill David. The Bible records that “an evil spirit from the Lord came upon Saul” (1 Samuel 18:10). This seems to imply that, in his jealousy and hatred toward an innocent man, Saul opened the door for demonic influence in his own heart. His paranoia became so overwhelming that he went on a murderous rampage, convinced that David was out to get him and that everyone else was against him, too, including the Lord’s priests (1 Samuel 22:13–19) and his own son Jonathan (1 Samuel 20:30–33). If God’s anointed king could be destroyed by paranoia, we should all be aware of our own vulnerability.
