This document discusses the current status of important transboundary animal diseases in Vietnam. It notes that foot-and-mouth disease (FMD), highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI), and porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) are the most prevalent and cause significant economic losses. FMD was first recorded in 1885 and outbreaks occur almost yearly. PRRS was first detected in 2000 but did not cause outbreaks until 2007, and three genotypes are present. HPAI outbreaks due to H5N1 were first recorded in 2003 and have occurred in three waves with evolving clades, complicating the situation. Control measures and vaccine development from local isolates are discussed to address these diseases of concern.
