5. Philippine Native Pig Business Summitii
On behalf of the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development
(PCAARRD) of the Department of Science and Technology, I thank the Bureau of Animal Industry of the DA
and the private players of the budding native pig industry for partnering with us in organizing this Philippine
Native Pig Business Summit.
This undertaking has put together R&D workers, producers, traders, processors, and consumers to discuss
current trends and innovations in production, processing and marketing native pigs and its products. The
DOST-PCAARRD is optimistic that this activity will incite a more dynamic, efficient and sustainable native pig
production, processing and marketing in the country.
We at DOST-PCAARRD have recognized the economic potential of our Philippine Native Pigs hence our on-
going R&D activities are currently focused on breed development, healthcare and production management to
ensure sustainable production of native pigs that are predictable in production performance and consistent in
product quality. These R&D initiatives aspire to improve the genetic quality of our native pigs thru selection for
the establishment of breeding true-to-type populations that will produce the breeders necessary for commercial
production of lechon pigs.
Rest assured that the DOST-PCAARRD together with its R&D partners will continuously seek science-based
technologies and systems that promote profitable utilization of our native pigs and enhance its economic
potentials in terms of creating sustainable rural enterprises and dynamic meat processing business to benefit its
stakeholders in general.
Again, on behalf of the DOST-PCAARRD I thank everyone for actively participating in this summit.

MESSAGE
Welcome to all the participants of the Philippine Native Pig Business Summit in Cebu City! On behalf of
the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), I would like to congratulate the Department of Science and
Technology - Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development
(DOST-PCAARD) for organizing this event.
Cebu is known as the home of delicious lechon, with Cebu-based establishments like Zubuchon and Rico’s
Lechon expanding to Metro Manila. But the essence of this year’s theme, “The Philippine Native Pig: On its way
from local to global markets”, rings true not only for Cebu lechon but for the entire pig industry in the country.
The DOST has always been DTI’s partner in helping our sunrise industries. While we provide trainings and
loans to micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), DOST upgrades their software and hardware
through research and development to help entrepreneurs modernize their businesses. Through our combined
initiatives—a united front of government, private sector, and academe—we aim to make smarter and more
productive entrepreneurs who will think of innovative ways to reach local and global markets.
I wish the organizers and participants success in your summit.
Congratulations and mabuhay!

7. Philippine Native Pig Business Summitiv
My warmest greetings and congratulations to the organizers and participants as you hold the Philippine Native
Pig Business Summit.
The theme “The Philippine Native Pig: On its Way from Local to Global Markets” speaks well of your steadfast
commitment in promoting further the development of our livestock industries, in particular the pork industry.
As we all know, the Philippine hog sector remained second on the list of Top Ten Agricultural Commodities in
Agriculture and is at the forefront of local food security and poverty alleviation. These achievements will not be
possible without the help of native pig raisers who work together with the government to strengthen, protect and
promote the local swine industry.
I am positive that this convention will again be a resounding success as it serves as an avenue for both our
commercial and backyard hog raisers to be equipped with current trends in the industry.
On behalf of the Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI), we would like to express our sincere gratitude to our
partners for bringing the hog industry into a greater heights. Let us continue to work together for a vibrant and
competitive livestock industry!

MESSAGE
My congratulations to DOST-PCAARRD and the Bureau of Animal Industry for a fruitful and inspiring business
summit that highlights the potentials of the Philippine native pigs in building rural enterprises and in promoting
Filipino ethnic delicacies to local and foreign consumers.
For many years, the Philippines has favored imported animal genetics over our own due to their bigger body
size, faster growth rate and better production efficiency. However, the preference for imported hybrid animals
has inadvertently marginalized small-scale animal raisers particularly those in rural areas. Moreover, the
emergence of diseases that affects commercial hybrid animals and the apparent change in climate has added more
complications in local livestock production. Thus attention has been given to native animals due to their apparent
resilience to extremes of weather and to their ability to survive and reproduce under natural conditions with
minimal human intervention. These prompted the Philippine government to appreciate the value and invest on
the development of our very own native animals.
The Philippine Native Animals Development (PNAD) program through DA Administrative Order No. 15 in
2010, which is being implemented by the Bureau of Animal Industry in collaboration with academe and other
R&D institutions was launched to promote sustainable development and profitable utilization of our native
animals.
The institutionalization of the PNAD program spurred the collaboration of various government R&D agencies
and selected State Universities and Colleges (SUCs) with common goal of promoting the conservation,
improvement and profitable utilization of domesticated native animals.
With the Bureau of Animal Industry (DA-BAI) as the lead agency with the support of its partner agencies, several
trainings, seminars and summits have been conducted to promote improved practices on breeding, production
and management, processing and product value-adding to private sector stakeholders of native animals. R&D
initiatives conducted with DOST-PCAARRD and partner SUCs have provided science-based interventions for
sustainable production of breeder and slaughter native pigs, chickens and ducks.
With the technical and material assistance provided by government, I hope that utilization of native animals as
source of livelihood will flourish in private animal farms particularly in rural areas.
I wish everyone a fruitful meeting.

MESSAGE
I congratulate the organizers of this very 1st Philippine Native Pig Business Summit - the Philippine Council for
Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (PCAARRD) of the Department of
Science and Technology (DOST) and the Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI) of the Department of Agriculture
(DA), for pursuing this activity with the primary goal of promoting products of native pigs to wider markets.
I am very proud that the R&D investments of DOST-PCAARRD thru its Industry Strategic S&T Program
(ISP) on native pig breed development, production, and profitable utilization resulted in products that gained
much appreciation by producers, processors, traders, and consumers. For decades, the Philippine native
pig has been discriminated by producers because of its low production potential, unpredictable production
performance, and inconsistent product quality. However, the application of appropriate Science and Technology
in breeding and selection brought about true-to-type populations of native pigs with predictable production
performance and consistent product quality. Moreover, the development of science-based native pig feeding and
management protocols that are anchored on indigenous knowledge, and locally available material inputs ensure
low production cost. These features of native pig production opened opportunities for small rural farmers to
participate in the production.
Indeed, this native pig business summit is timely and necessary in translating the products of R&D into
livelihood and business opportunities. The DOST is pleased to extend its support to native pig researchers,
farmers, and entrepreneurs. Looking at the current trends, the DOST believes that our Philippine native pig is
now rightfully positioned towards global markets.
Again, my sincere congratulations to all individuals and agencies behind this very fruitful Philippine Native Pig
Business Summit!

10. Philippine Native Pig Business Summit vii
On behalf of the Department of Science and Technology, I would like to congratulate the organizers the
Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (PCAARRD)
and the Bureau of Animal Industry of the Department of Agriculture for spearheading this successful business
summit on the Philippine Native Pigs.
Our native animals have long been recognized as important sources of food for the rural communities with
a big potential to feed our growing population. They also show potentials to provide substantial economic
contributions to the country’s economy and sustainable livelihood livestock producers particularly those in the
rural areas. The Philippine native pig, although slow growing compared to its hybrid counterpart, but it is cheaper
to produce and its product is paid a premium price when processed into Filipino delicacies (i.e. lechon or etag).
At DOST-PCAARRD, research and development initiatives are currently being undertaken on native pig breed
development primarily to transform our mongrel native pig populations into breeding true-to-type breeding
populations with uniform physical characterisitcs, predictable production performance and consistent product
quality. To date, the program on Conservation, Improvement and Profitable Utilization of Philippine Native
Pigs has established 7 breeding true-to-type native pig populations in 5 regions of the of the country. Also, thru
the R&D program average litter size of native pigs has been increased from an average of 5 to 7 pigslets per litter.
The proportion of sows that give birth to 8 or more piglets per litter has increased from 12 to 20%. Uniformity
of the native pigs that are products of the breeding and selection R&D program is already more than 80% and
the unique taste and texture of its meat is adequately maintained. These initial R&D outputs demonstrate
the enourmous potentials of the Philippine native pigs in building enterprises and in creating livelihood
opportunities if its further development is sustained.
Our endeavors to transform the native pig into a commodity that creates business opportunities has just begun.
We still have a long way to go. Rest assured that we at the DOST are in full support to make the journey of our
Philippine Native Pig from local to global markets a reality.
Again, my congratulations to the organizers for a very successful Philippine Native Pig Business Summit!
