INTRODUCTION TO THE STUDY OF

most exalted (Khuluq) disposition.”

TAQWA
From the word root

“WAU-QAF-YA” - we have:

“WI-QAA-YA” meaning – “to safeguard; shelter; shield;
take care from; precaution; avert; etc.”
Thus the implication is “to have regard or being conscious of Allah
such that we are especially cautious (by safeguarding ourselves
and our deeds from all sins), so as not to incur His wrath and
punishment.”


In summary, TAQWA is that state of consciousness of Allah s.w.t.
with:

[1] AWARENESS
[2] UNDERSTANDING
[3] REVERENCE
[4] AWE
[5] HOPE
[6] SHAME

FROM PREVIOUS LESSON # 7 a


“AND SO, set thy face steadfastly towards the [one ever-true] faith,
turning away from all that is false, in accordance with the natural
disposition (FITRAH) which Allah has instilled into man: [for,] not to
allow any change to corrupt what Allah has thus created this is the
[purpose of the one] ever-true faith; but most people know it not.”
(Qur’an: Rum: 30: 30)

“But unto him who shall have stood in fear of his Sustainer's
Presence, and held back his inner self (NAFS) from base desires
(HAWA), paradise will truly be the goal!”
(Qur’an: Nazi’at: 79: 40-41)


“And so those who were given knowledge may know that it is
the truth from your Lord and [therefore] believe in it, and their
hearts (QULUBUHUM) humbly submit to it. And indeed is Allah
the Guide of those who have believed to a straight path.”
(Qur’an: Hajj: 22: 54)

“O you who have attained to faith! Respond to the
call of Allah and the Messenger whenever he calls
you unto that which will give you life; and know that
Allah intervenes between man and [the desires of]
his heart, and that unto Him you shall be gathered.“
(Qur’an: Anfal: 8: 24)


“Islam (submission to the Will of Allah) is built upon five .... “
(Hadith of the Prophet Muhammad s.a.w.)

“Do not regard your duty in ‘ibadat as mere rituals,
For they are for your education and development
to become truly a Muslim”

“O YOU who have attained to faith! What is amiss with
you that, when you are called upon, "Go forth and
strive in Allah's cause," you cling heavily to the earth?
Would you content yourselves with [the comforts of]
this worldly life in preference to [the good of] the life to
come? But the enjoyment of life in this world is but a
paltry thing when compared with the life to come!”
(Qur’an: Taubah: 9: 38)


“ALLURING unto man is the enjoyment of worldly
desires through women, and children, and heaped-up
treasures of gold and silver, and horses of high mark,
and cattle, and lands.
All this may be enjoyed in the life of this world - but the
most beauteous of all goals is with Allah.”
(Qur’an: Aali ‘Imran: 3: 14)


“Say: "Shall I tell you of better things than those
[earthly joys]? For the God-conscious (MUTTAQI) there
are, with their Sustainer, gardens through which
running waters flow, therein to abide, and spouses
pure, and Allah's goodly acceptance." And Allah sees
all that is in [the hearts of] His servants.”
(Qur’an: Aali ‘Imran: 3: 15)


TO PROCEED THIS LESSON # 7 b –


“O ye who believe! The idolaters (MUSHRIKUN) only are
unclean (NAJSUN) . So let them not come near the Inviolable
Place of Worship after this their year. ”


O Allah! Make faith (iiman) dear to us and beautify it in our hearts
and make disbelief (Kufr), sinning (Fusuq) and rebelliousness (`isyan)
hateful to us, and make us among the rightly guided (Raa-shi-duun).
ALLAA-HUM-MA –HABIB – ILAI-NAL – II – MAN , WA – ZAI – YIN – HU
FEE – QU – LUU- BI-NAA, WA – KAR – RIH – ILAI –NAL – KUF – RA –
WAL – FU – SUU-QO – WAL – SW – YAAN,
WAJ – ‘AL –NAA – MINAR – RAA – SHI - DUUN

“O Allah! Verily I implore You to grant me
Faith (IIMAN) which is perpetually present in my heart”
ALLAA-HUM-MA - IN-NEE - AS-ALU-KA – EE – MAA – NAN –
DAA – I-MAN - YU – BAA – SHI - RU - QAL-BEE


“And I implore You to grant me Certainty (YA-QEEN) which is true
(genuine), until I am convinced that nothing will affect me
except what You have ordained for me ”
WA – AS – A – LU – KA – YA – QEE – NAN – SWO – DI – QAN – HAT-TA
A’ – LA –MA – AN – NA-HU - LAN – YU – SWEE – BA-NEE –
IL – LA – MAA – KA – TAB – TAHU – ‘ALAY

“And (grant upon me to have) contentment (REDHA)
towards whatever You have Decreed for me ”

WA – AR – DWI – NEE – BI – MAA – QO – SAM – TA – HU - LEE

“And withal, ( MAA-UMIRUU) they were not enjoined aught
but (IL-LAA) that they should (LIYA’-BUDULLAAH) worship
(serve) Allah, (MUKH-LI-SWEEN) sincere in their faith in Him
alone, turning away from all that is false (HUNAFAA); ”
(Qur’an: Bayyinat: 98: 5)


”Truly Allah loves those who turn unto Him,
and loves (AL-MUTA-TWOH-HI-REEN) those
who have a care for cleanliness (purity). “
(Qur’an: Baqarah: 2: 222)


”And He caused rain to descend on you from heaven, to
clean you therewith, to remove from you the stain of Satan
to (LI-YAR-BITW) strengthen your hearts (QU-LUUBUKUM),
and (YU-THAB-BIT) to plant your feet firmly therewith.”
(Qur’an: Anfal: 8: 11)


TO PROCEED THIS LESSON # 7 c –


"Verily I am Allah: there is no god but I: so serve thou Me
(only), and (AQEEM) establish regular prayer (AS-SWOLAH)
for My Remembrance. (DZIK-RI)”
(Qur’an: TaHa: 20:14)


“If anyone withdraws himself from (DZIKRI-RAH-MAAN)
remembrance of Most Gracious, (NU-QOY-YID-LAHU) We
appoint for him an evil one to be an intimate companion to
him (QO-REEN). Such (evil ones) really hinder them from the
Path but they think that they are being guided aright! “
(Qur’an: Zukhruf: 49: 36-37)


“Those who believe, and whose hearts find their rest in the
remembrance of Allah - for, verily, in the remembrance of
Allah [men's] hearts do find their rest (tranquillity)-: “
(Qur’an: Ra-’ad: 13: 28)


“It is He (Allah) who sent down tranquillity into the hearts
of the believers that they would increase in faith along
with their [present] faith. “
(Qur’an: Fath: 48: 4)


“And establish Regular Prayer (Swolah) : for Prayer
restrains from shameful and unjust deeds; and
remembrance of Allah is the greatest (thing in life)
without doubt.”
(Qur’an: Ankabut: 29: 45)


” O children of Adam! wear your beautiful apparel at
every time and place of prostration (i.e. Masjidin ). ”
(Qur’an: A’raf: 7: 31)


“O CHILDREN of Adam! Indeed, We have bestowed upon you
from on high [the knowledge of making] garments to cover your
nakedness, and as a thing of beauty: but the garment of Allah –
TAQWA: consciousness (and fear of Allah) is the best of all.
Herein lies a message from Allah, so that man might take it to
heart."

(Qur’an: A’raf: 7: 26)

“(Allah has) made for me the (whole surface of the) earth pure
and as a place for prostration (masjidan); thus wherever a person
finds himself to be, let him perform his swolah at that place
which he can find (himself to be).”
(Hadith reported by Bukhary Muslim and Ahmad)

“ set up regular prayers: for such prayers are
enjoined on believers at stated times.”
(Qur’an: An-Nisa’: 4:103)


“now shall We turn thee to a direction ( Qiblah ) that
shall please thee. Turn then thy face in the direction
of the Sacred Mosque; wherever ye are turn your
faces in that direction.”


Say: ”Behold, my prayer, and [all] my acts of worship, my living and
my dying are for Allah [alone, Who is], the Sustainer of all the
worlds, in whose divinity none has a share: for thus have I been
bidden – and I shall [always] be foremost among those who
surrender themselves to Him (Muslimeen).”
(Qur’an: Surah al-An’am:6:162)


“Nay seek (Allah's) help with patient perseverance (Swobr’) and
prayer (Swolah): it is indeed hard, except to (KHO-SHI-’EEN) those
who are humble.”


TO PROCEED THIS LESSON # 7 d –


“The Believers men and women, are (AWLIYA’) protectors one of another: they
enjoin what is just, and forbid what is evil: they observe regular prayers
(swolah), practice regular charity (zakah), and obey Allah and His Messenger.
On them will Allah pour His mercy: for Allah is Exalted in power, Wise.”

"But seek, with the (wealth) which Allah has bestowed on thee,
the Home of the Hereafter, nor forget thy portion in this world:
but do thou good, as Allah has been good to thee , and seek not
(occasions for) mischief in the land: for Allah loves not those who
do mischief."
(Qur’an: Qasas: 28: 77)

“ The alms are only for the poor and the needy, and those who collect
them, and those whose hearts are to be reconciled, and to free the
captives and the debtors, and for the cause of Allah, and (for) the
wayfarer; a duty imposed by Allah. Allah is Knower, Wise.”


“ Those who spend their wealth in the cause of Allah and
follow not up their gifts with reminders of their generosity or
with injury,― for them their reward is with their Lord; on
them shall be no fear, nor shall they grieve. ”

“and [true servants of the Most Gracious are they] who,
whenever they spend on others, are neither wasteful nor
niggardly but [remember that] there is always a just mean
between those [two extremes];”
(Qur’an: Furqan: 25: 67 )


TO PROCEED THIS LESSON # 7 e –


”O ye who believe! fasting is prescribed to you as it was
prescribed to those before you that ye may (learn) selfrestraint (with TAQWA – consciousness and reverential
fear of transgression).―”
(Qur’an: Baqarah: 2:183)


“Have you seen the one who takes as his god his own desire?
Then would you be responsible for him? Or do you think that
most of them hear or reason? They are not except like
livestock. Rather, they are [even] more astray in [their] way.”
(Qur’an:Furqan: 25: 43-44)

“Then We put you, [O Muhammad], on an ordained way concerning the
matter [of religion – SHARI’AH]; so follow it and do not follow the (AHWA)
inclinations of those who do not know. Indeed, they will never avail you
against Allah at all. And indeed, the wrongdoers are allies of one another;
but Allah is the protector of the righteous.”
(Qur’an: Jatsiyah: 45: 18)

TO PROCEED THIS LESSON # 7 f –


“The head of the matter is Al-Islam; its pillar is the
(obligatory) prayer i.e. Swolah; and its highest pinnacle is
Jihad (striving with utmost) in the way of Allah.”
(Hadith reported by Muslim)


“ If anyone undertakes that duty therein let there be no obscenity nor
wickedness nor wrangling in the Hajj. And whatever good ye do (be
sure) Allah knows it. And take a provision (with you) for the journey,
but the best of provisions is right conduct ( TAQWA). So be conscious
of (and fear) Me, O ye that are wise.!”
(Qur’an : Baqarah: 2 : 197)

“Fair in the eyes of men is the love of things they covet: women and
sons; heaped-up hoards of gold and silver; horses branded (for blood
and excellence); and (wealth of) cattle and well-tilled land. Such are
the possessions of this world's life; but in nearness to Allah is the best
of the goals (to return to).”
(Qur’an: Aali ‘Imran: 3:14)

“Not equal are those believers remaining [at home] - other than the
disabled - and the mujahideen, [who strive and fight] in the cause of
Allah with their wealth and their lives. Allah has preferred the
mujahideen through their wealth and their lives over those who
remain [behind], by degrees.”
(Qur’an: Aali ‘Imran: 3:14)

“Behold, satan is an enemy unto you: so treat him as an enemy.”
(Qur’an: Fatir : 35 : 6)

“O Believers! Surrender yourselves wholly unto Allah, and follow
not satan’s footsteps, for verily , he is your open foe.”
(Qur’an: Baqarah : 2 : 208)
