ISTIQISTIQOOMAHMAH
From the root Qaf – Waw – Mim ; stand still or firm,
rose/stand up, managed/conducted/ordered/regulated/superintended;
established, made it straight/right, maintain/erect/observe/perform, set
up, people/community/company, abode, stature/dignity/rank.
QAA-MA : to keep a thing or an affair in a right state.
QAWAMA : stood still; rise up
QIY-YAM : uphold; stand; QAYYIM : right, correct, true
ISTIQOM : It became right; direct; in a right state; straight; even;
tended towards the right, or desired, point, or object; had a right
direction, or tendency; ,or regular

AL-ISTI-QO-MATU – KHOY – RUN – MIN – AL-FI – KA-RO-MAH
“(ISTIQOMAH) To be consistent upon righteousness
is better than a thousand miracles (KAROMAH).”

Indeed, those who have said, "Our Lord is Allah " and then
remained on a right course (ISTAQOMU) - the angels will
descend upon them, [saying], "Do not fear and do not grieve but
receive good tidings of Paradise, which you were promised.
We [angels] were your allies in worldly life and [are so] in the
Hereafter. And you will have therein whatever your souls desire,
and you will have therein whatever you request [or wish]. As
accommodation from a [Lord who is] Forgiving and Merciful."
(Qur’an: Fussilat: 41: 30-32)

“This day I have perfected for you your DEEN – religion -
and completed My favour upon you and have approved
for you AL-ISLAM as religion.”
(Qur’an: Maa-idah: 5: 2)

“O you who have believed, enter into Islam completely
[and perfectly] and do not follow the footsteps of Satan.
Indeed, he is to you a clear enemy.”
(Qur’an: Baqara: 2: 208)

““And thus have We willed you to be a community of the middle wayAnd thus have We willed you to be a community of the middle way

“Nor should the Believers all go forth together: if a
contingent from every expedition remained behind,
they could devote themselves to studies in religion
(LIYA-TAFAQQAHUU FID-DEEN) and admonish the
people when they return to them― that thus they
(may learn) to guard themselves (against evil)."

When we think of the term ‘FIQH’ we tend to apply what , as commonly
understood to be subject regarding Islamic jurisprudence.
The original meaning – (in Qur’anic and Ahadith usage), the term refers
to the “profound understanding of the entire “Deen – al – Islam”
LI- YA –TAFAQ-QAHU – FID- DEEN : “ they could devote themselves to
FAQQAH-HU (profound learning in) studies in religion (Deen) “
YU-FAQ-QIH-HU FID – DEEN : “He will make him a FAQIH (learned) in
matters of the religion(Deen)”

““INDEED, there has come unto you [O mankind] a Messenger
[Muhammad] from among yourselves: heavily weighs -upon
him [the thought] that you might suffer [in the life to come];
full of concern for you [is he, and] full of compassion and
mercy towards the believers.”.”
((Qur’an: Taubah: 9: 128Qur’an: Taubah: 9: 128))

“Whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth is
exalting Allah, (AL-MAALIK) the Sovereign , (AL-QUDDUS) the
Pure, (AL-’AZEEZ) the Exalted in Might , (AL-HAKEEM) the
Wise .
It is He (Allah) who has sent among the unlettered a
Messenger from themselves reciting to them His verses
(Signs) and purifying them (to grow in purity) and teaching
them the Book (AL-KITAAB) and wisdom (AL-HIKMAH) -
although they were before in clear error –”
(Qur’an: Juma’ah: 62: 1-2)

“ And [to] others of them (AA-KHAREEN) who have not
yet joined them. And He is (AL-’AZIZ) the Exalted in
Might, (AL-HAKEEM) the Wise.
That is the bounty of Allah, which He gives to whom He
wills, and Allah is the possessor of great bounty.”
(Qur’an: Juma’ah: 62: 4-5)

“ YOU ARE indeed the best community that has ever
been brought forth for [the good of] mankind: you
enjoin the doing of what is right and forbid the doing of
what is wrong, and you believe in Allah. Now if the
followers of earlier revelation had attained to [this kind
of] faith, it would have been for their own good; [but
only few] among them are believers, while most of
them are iniquitous (defiantly disobedient):
(Qur’an: Aali ‘Imran: 3: 110)

““The best of mankind – (believers) – are inThe best of mankind – (believers) – are in
my generation, then (a generation) after it,my generation, then (a generation) after it,
and then (another generation) after that.”and then (another generation) after that.”

“Whomsoever that Allah wishes for him goodness, He will
make him a FAQIH (learned) in matters of the religion(Deen);
and for everything there is a pillar, and the pillar of this
religion is AL-FIQH – (the profound understanding of the
Deen); a learned scholar (of the Deen) is more difficult upon
satan than a thousand worshippers.”

““The best ones amongst you is the person who makesThe best ones amongst you is the person who makes
you remember Allah when you look upon him;you remember Allah when you look upon him;
and whenever he speaks it increases you yourand whenever he speaks it increases you your
knowledge (of theknowledge (of the DeenDeen), and with his deeds it), and with his deeds it
inspires (motivates) you to strive for your Hereafter.”inspires (motivates) you to strive for your Hereafter.”

Such a learned scholar of Islam (‘ALEEM) is not to be likened with
those academics or intellectuals of today, for they are foremost people
who are always striving to connect themselves with Allah SWT and
being convinced of the Reality (HAQIQAH) that they are forever (FAQIR
-ILALLAAH) in state of poverty before Allah – seeking and beseeching
His Mercy (RAHMAH), Generosity (KARAMAH), Subtle Preservation
(LATAIF) and hoping to Please Allah (MARDHATILLAH), etc.
They are people of Remembrance (AHLUDZ-DZIKR) , the ones who are
not easily distracted by the conundrum or hustle-bustle of the worldly
life which tend to make many people to forget their true purpose for
existing, and the inevitable meeting with their Lord Maker in the
Hereafter.

“.. and teaching them the Book (AL-KITAAB) ..”

“Alif, Lam, Ra. [This is] a Book which We have revealed
to you, [O Muhammad], that you might bring mankind
out of darkness's into the light by permission of their
Lord - to the path of the Exalted in Might (AL-’AZEEZ),
the Praiseworthy(AL-HAMEED) –”
(Qur’an: Ibrahim: 14: 1)

“Allah, to whom belongs whatever is in the heavens and
whatever is on the earth. And woe to the disbelievers
(AL-KAA-FIREEN), they will face the most severe
punishment!.”

“(KAAFIREEN) The ones who prefer the worldly life over
the Hereafter and avert [people] from the way of Allah,
seeking to make it (seem) deviant. Those are in extreme
error (far astray).”

“And We did not send any messenger except [speaking] in
the language of his people to state clearly for them, and
Allah sends astray [thereby] whom He wills and guides
whom He wills. And He is the Exalted in Might
(AL-’AZEEZ), the Wise (AL-HAKEEM).”

“And We certainly sent Moses with Our signs, [saying], "Bring
out your people from darkness's into the light and remind
them of the days of Allah." Indeed in that are signs for
everyone (SWOB-BAA-RAN)patient and (SHAKUUR) grateful.”

“And [recall, O Children of Israel], when Moses said
to His people, "Remember the favour of Allah upon
you when He saved you from the people of
Pharaoh, who were afflicting you with the worst
torment and were slaughtering your [new-born]
sons and keeping your females alive. And in that
was a great trial from your Lord.”

“And [remember] when your Lord proclaimed, 'If you are
(SHAKARTUM) grateful, I will surely (LA-A-ZEE-DAN-NAKUM)
increase you [in favour]; but if you (KAFARTUM) deny, indeed,
My punishment is severe (‘AZAA-BEE – LA-SHADEE-D).' "

“And Allah has revealed to you (O Muhammad) the
Book (AL-KITAAB) and wisdom (AL-HIKMAH) and has
taught you that which you did not know. And Allah’s
favour upon you is tremendous (‘AZEEM) indeed"
(Qur’an: An-Nisa’: 4: 113)

“Certainly did Allah confer [great] favour upon the believers
when He sent among them a Messenger from themselves,
reciting to them His verses and purifying them and teaching
them the Book (AL-KITAAB) and wisdom (AL-HIKMAH),
although they had been before in manifest error."
(Qur’an: Aali ‘Imran: 3: 164)

““And keep yourself patient [by being] with those whoAnd keep yourself patient [by being] with those who
((YAD-’UU-NA ROB-BAHUMYAD-’UU-NA ROB-BAHUM) call upon their Lord in the) call upon their Lord in the
morning and the evening, seeking His countenance.morning and the evening, seeking His countenance.
AndAnd let not your eyes pass beyond them, desiringlet not your eyes pass beyond them, desiring
adornments of the worldly lifeadornments of the worldly life, and do not obey one, and do not obey one
whose heart We have made heedless of Ourwhose heart We have made heedless of Our
remembrance and who follows his desire and whoseremembrance and who follows his desire and whose
affair is ever [in] neglect.”affair is ever [in] neglect.”

““They consider it a favour to you that they haveThey consider it a favour to you that they have
accepted Islam. Say, "Do not consider your Islam aaccepted Islam. Say, "Do not consider your Islam a
favour to me. Rather, Allah has conferred favour uponfavour to me. Rather, Allah has conferred favour upon
you that He has guided you to the faith, if you shouldyou that He has guided you to the faith, if you should
be truthful."be truthful."

We have to admit that many of us tend to be complacent, satisfied
with our being a Muslim, priding ourselves as though we have
somewhat contributed (doing a favour) by adding to the numbers of
Muslims in the world.
This is sheer arrogance if devoid of the realization that it is indeed
Allah’s SWT guidance and power that made our being Muslim
possible. We should instead work upon our sense of gratitude
(SHAKUR) and strive to seek knowledge and understanding to reach to
a conviction (YAQEEN) of true believer (MU’-MEEN).
This requires, not merely knowing but acting upon – the responding to
the teaching of Al-Islam – which permeates every facets of our life.
This (our responding) , is the true LIFE – according to Allah SWT.

““O you who have believed, (O you who have believed, ( ISTAJIBUISTAJIBU) respond to) respond to
Allah and to the Messenger when he calls you toAllah and to the Messenger when he calls you to
that which gives you life (that which gives you life (LI-MAA-YULI-MAA-YUHH-YEE-KUM-YEE-KUM).).
And know that Allah intervenes between a man andAnd know that Allah intervenes between a man and
his heart and that to Him you will be gathered.”his heart and that to Him you will be gathered.”
((Qur’an:Anfaal: 8: 24Qur’an:Anfaal: 8: 24))

Allah SWT even highlighted one of the most important favour for us to
be grateful for, to rejoice, to appreciate its true value and strive in our
entire life to celebrate and live up to – i.e. to refer to His sending our
Prophet Muhammad ‫ﷺ‬‫ﷺ‬ as the EDUCATOR par excellence.
And the nature of EDUCATION of the DEEN is throughout our whole life.
Note: It even stipulates the proper approaches – (which alludes to
ADAB), and the ultimate attainment is in the learning of the KITAB (Al-
Qur’an) and AL-HIKMAH (the Prophetic Wisdom).
Although HIKMAH is referring to SUNNAH AN-NABAWWIYYAH, yet the
Qur’anic usage of the term AL-HIKMAH must be profoundly
understood, not relegated simplistically to be mere learning or quoting
of Qur’an, Ahadith and As-Sunnah alone.

“… and teaching them the Book (AL-
KITAAB) and wisdom (AL-HIKMAH) ..”

"I have been sent with JAWAMI’ AL-KALEEM (i.e., the shortest expression
carrying the widest meanings), and I was made victorious with awe (fear
cast into the hearts of the enemy), and while I was sleeping, the keys of
the treasures of the earth were brought to me and were put in my hand."

JAWAMI'-AL-KALEEM means (“comprehensive
speech”) that Allah SWT has granted the Prophet ‫ﷺ‬ ability to
speak in the shortest expression carrying the widest meanings;
expressions in one or two statements or thereabouts the
numerous matters that used to be written in the books revealed
before him.
This epitomizes the Wisdom (AL-HIKMAH) granted to our Prophet
Muhammad ‫ﷺ‬‫ﷺ‬ .
In this module we shall try to reflect upon the significance as in just
one Hadith – the Prophet Muhammad’s ‫ﷺ‬‫ﷺ‬ advice to a Sahaabiy
Abu Dzar al-Ghifari r.a., which we hope Allah SWT will grant us
profound understanding of the DEEN – insha-Allah.

O Aba Dzar! Renew the ship, for verily the ocean is deep,
And take complete provision, for verily the journey is far,
And lighten the load, for verily the obstacles are almost insurmountable,
And be sincere in your deeds, for verily the scrutinizer of faults
is The Seeing (Allah).

THE HADITH

As in the famous Hadith of Jibra’il a.s. from which our basic beginners
(FARDHU ‘AIN ) course curriculum was based on, I would like to propose
for this module on “TAFAQQUH” this time to deeply reflect upon each
of the key aspects (terms) our Prophet Muhammad ‫ﷺ‬‫ﷺ‬ used in this
(chosen) Hadith and then elucidate their significance and wisdom
beautifully regarding Islamic teachings as a total way of life (AD-DEEN).
I believe in the consistency of our Prophet’s advice, which seminally
contain gems which are in fact beautifully elaborated upon in the rest of
the other teachings of Islam. This brings up the wisdom (AL-HIKMAH).
“… and teaching them the Book and Wisdom”

In the first part of the advice (of the Hadith to Abu Dzar r.a.) , the
Prophet ‫ﷺ‬‫ﷺ‬ said (as in Hadith mentioned above):
“Renew the ship, for verily the ocean is deep”
In this module, we would pick up the key words as the theme to be
elaborated viz. JADDID then AL-SAFEENAH
then AL-BAHR and then ‘AMEEQ.
Then we would , insha-Allah, continue to do the same elucidation
(reflections) for each subsequent (phrase) advice in the same Hadith.
