2. The Beginning
The Indian Mythology is the body of stories that is associated with Indian Culture. My mind
was fascinated by different stories told to me by my Grandfather. He explained me about
certain texts being part of Indian mythology According to Indian Mythology " Vedas " are
the earliest texts known to Indians. Vedas are the collection of praises or hymns for the
Aryan gods also known as "DEVAS" in India to make them happy so that it could bring them
wealth and good fortune. The exact origin of Vedas is still disputed. These Vedas are
composed in Vedic sanskrit.
These hymns are used to praise gods like Indra, Agni, Surya , Varuna, Vayu which are the
personification of the natural elements like Thunder , Fire ,Sun,Water,Wind
The Vedas are further divided into 4 categories :
1. RIG VEDA (Collection of praises)
2. SAMA VEDA (Collection of melodies)
3. YAJUR VEDA (Collection of sacrifical rituals)
4. ATHRVA VEDA (Collection of Rishi)
3. Holy Trinity-Vishnu
In Indian Mythology, there are a total of 33 gods. The prime one is VISHNU.
Rest of all gods originated from him. So he is the supreme god accepted to all
Hindus. He is the the creator and destroyer of all the entities in the universe.
Generally, he is characterized diversely but his most common depiction is
that of a body with blue colour, four arms holding different things in each
hand.
He is depicted with following things:
1. A lotus flower in lower right hand.
2. blunt Mace in lower left hand.
3. A Chakra in upper right hand(sharp discus rotating with high speed).
4. A Conch in upper left hand.
4.
5. Brahma
While the supreme one,VISHNU rests on the SHESHANAGA (serpent with
thousand heads),the BRAHMA originated from the naval of Vishnu. Brahma
rises from the naval of the supreme one in a lotus flower. Brahma is known
to be the creator of the whole universe.
Brahma is depicted with four heads and white beard which is the sign of his
wisdom. He also have four arms just like Vishnu. Brahma hold following
things in his hands:
1. VEDAS (the book of knowledge)
2. KAMANDALU (water pot)
3. MALA (string of beads)
4. SRUVA (a sacrificial tool )
6.
7. Shiva
He is my favourite among all. One amongst the holy trinity in Hinduism, SHIVA is considered to be
the destroyer and fierce when angry. He is the conqueror of death. His mahamritunjaya mantra
given in the Rig Veda is chanted to free one from death and diseases.
He is known for his fearsome forms which he took while battling evil and killing them. He took a
total of 24 forms. He is also known for his raging dance form TANDAV to show his anger. Though
considered violent, he is worshipped by Hindus with full dedication because he is the only god
among all the gods who can be made happy with least rituals and sacrifices but with pure
dedication. He is the LORD OF YOGA and a YOGI (practitioner of yoga).
He is depicted with a TRISHUL (trident) as his main weapon and a third eye on his forehead with
long hair. He only wears the hide of a Tiger with his body covered with the ash of deads. He holds
river GANGA in his hair He also hold a DAMRU (musical instrument) and a Snake around his neck
which represents his power against death and poison. He mounts on NANDI (Bull) and his abode is
MOUNT KAILASH. He lives with his wife PARVATI known for his form Goddess Durga which also killed
many evils is worshipped in many parts of India. Shiva had two sons with Parvati namely Ganesha &
Kartikeya.
