Copyright 2009 Provides urgent and preventive dental services in communities with limited access to healthcare. Each of our community partners receives a brigade every 3 to 4 months where hundreds of patients are treated with fillings, cleanings and extractions, and are given dental hygiene workshops. Between brigades, our in-country team maintains relationships with the communities to provide follow-up to insure any dental procedures were successful.

One week after each brigade our dentists travel to each community to offer an open day of follow-up. After surgeries during the brigade, each patient is provided with the date of the follow-up visit. 39. Microfinance Brigades provides the educational, financial, and organizational resources needed to empower community leaders. Student volunteers receive training from internationally renowned microfinance institutions and then use this new knowledge to provide support to small farmers in need. At the end of the Brigade, students each grant a micro-loan to the community to provide a stepping stone for these farmers to escape the cycle of poverty and improve the quality of life for themselves and their families well into the future.

Water “pilas” allow for a convenient and sanitary storage unit saving families hundreds of hours per year walking long distances to a water source. Many preventive diseases are caused by unsanitary and unorganized waste disposal. Latrines provide a convenient and inexpensive solution near the home. Eco-stoves with chimneys limit the carbon and smoke that fills the home with harmful smoke and pollutants that cause many of the family’s respiratory illnesses. The eco-stoves also burn much more efficiently, limiting deforestation.

Copyright 2009 Kid's health education is a dynamic mix of songs, games, and interactive activities designed to teach simple but highly effective health promotion and disease prevention methods, such as handwashing and dental care. Adult and family health education first focuses on the importance, care, and maintenance of the construction projects and then secondly uses this as a jumping-off point to share other critical health concepts, such as treatment of potable drinking water.

Medical Brigades are available in both Honduras and Panama. These statistics provide an overview of one of our average community partners.
Global Medical Brigades has developed relationships with 80 community partners. For every medical brigade club that is established one more village is able to receive care. GMB clubs systematically traveled to Central America so that each community receives a medical brigade every 3 to 4 months. This method has been very successful in improving a consistent access to health care for the villages for a healthier population. For example, in 2005 in any given community partner, an average brigade consisted of more than 800 patients. In 2009, in that same community, a brigade only needed to treat about 300. The decrease in number not only shows the improved overall community health, but also allows us to provide more thorough comprehensive care.

Both positions offers students a first hand experience in medicine. Doctors only treat cases within the abilities of the brigade. As such, we strongly encourage Medical Brigades to recruit Dentists and pre-dental students to supplement a Medical Brigade. Panama has the 4th highest wealth disparity in all of Latin America and 1st highest in all of Central America For 2007, 56.8% of the unemployed Hondurans have done up to elementary school. The relationship between education-income per capita in a household is $53 for someone who has had elementary school education, while if the head of the family has received a superior education the income can be up to $391. As of 2003, 49% of all Panamanians and 57% of all poor in Panama are citizens less than 20 years old increasing a dire need for more youth opportunity
