CHAPTER 3
 MANUAL OF ARMS WITH
THE NJROTC DRILL RIFLE
Rifle Positions


    • The balance is the
      center of your rifle.

    • Position the rifle
      diagonally across the
      body.
Rifle Positions (cont.)
      • Left hand is at the
        balance, thumb and
        fingers grasping rifle
        and sling.
      • Extend and join fingers
        to form a “U” with thumb.
      • The barrel points up at
        an angle that bisects
        juncture of neck and
        shoulders.

     • The heel of butt is on line
       with the right hip.
     • Rifle is held at height that
        allows right forearm to
        be parallel to the deck
        when the small of stock
       is grasped with right
       hand.
     • The distance of rifle from
       the body should be about
       4 inches from your belt.

• The cadence of rifle movement is
  112 to 120 counts per minute.
• While marching at double time, the
  rifle is held across the body.
• The manual of arms for the rifle is
   taught while halted.
Rifle Nomenclature




Cadets should study this nomenclature
from the Drill Manual, page DM-32.
When you are given
the commands AT
EASE or REST, your
right foot remains
in place, and the rifle
is held as in parade
rest with your right
arm slightly relaxed.
While AT EASE,
you may not talk, but
while at REST, you
may talk softly.
PORT, ARMS

Purpose: To bring the rifle to a
two-handed carry position

• A two-count movement

• Executed when halted at order arms

• The command is, “Port, ARMS.”
PORT, ARMS (cont.)
On the command “ARMS,” and for the
count of one, grasp the rifle with your
right hand and raise it diagonally across
your chest until your right hand is in
front of and slightly
left of your face.

On the same count,
grasp the rifle at
the balance with
your left hand.

On the second count, move
your right hand from the
upper hand guard to the small
of the stock.

Both elbows should be
against your sides with your
right wrist and forearm
straight and parallel to the
ground, upper arm in line
with your body.
PORT, ARMS (cont.)

Your rifle should be 4 inches
in front of your body. The
fingers are joined and
wrapped around the rifle,
with the thumb wrapped
around the opposite side.

In the position of port arms,
the rifle is held across the
body with the butt in front
of the right hip.

      • A three-count movement

      • The command is
        “Order, ARMS.”

          • On the first count:

           ~ move your right hand
             smartly from the small
             of the stock to the upper
             hand guard

           ~ the elbow is held without
             strain and nearly touches
             the hand guard

    • On the second count:

     ~ release the balance with your
       left hand and lower the rifle
       until the butt is three inches
       from the deck

     ~ while lowering the rifle, change
       the grasp with the right hand to
       the „V‟ position and move your
       left hand near the stacking swivel

          • On the third count:

           ~ return your left hand
             smartly to your side

           ~ lower the butt gently to
             the deck

           • This is a two-count
             movement.

           • The command is
             “Port, ARMS.”

     • On the command of
       execution (1st count):

       ~ grasp the small of the
         stock with your right hand

       ~ the right arm is held down
         without strain

   executed only while halted
   at attention

 • The command is
   “Order, ARMS.”

       ~ grasp the small of the
         stock with your right hand

       ~ the right arm is held down
         without strain

    • On the second count release

     ~ bring the rifle across your body

     ~ grasp the balance with
       your left hand as in Port Arms

        of the stock to the upper

     your right hand

   ~ your right wrist and forearm

     without strain

   ~ at the same time grasp the
     heel of the butt

   ~ your thumb and index finger
     touch on top of the stock

   ~ the remaining fingers are
     joined and wrap around the
     rifle butt

   ~ the rifle is at a 45-degree
     angle to the deck, sights up

   ~ keep the rifle pointing
     directly fore and aft

   ~ left elbow is against your side

   • On count two, drop your
     right hand smartly to your
     side.

• This is a four-count
  movement.

• The command is
  “Inspection, ARMS.”

  • On count three, drop
    your head and look at the
    cartridge chamber of the
    rifle.

• On count four, raise your
  head smartly to the position
  of attention.

            Positions

• The command is “Squad (Platoon or
  Company), ATTENTION.”

• On “Squad (Platoon or Company),”
  come to Parade Rest.

• On “ATTENTION,” come to Order
  Arms in one count.

• From Fall Out:

 ~ The command is “FALL IN.”

 ~ On “FALL IN,” go back to your
   place in ranks.

 ~ Come to attention at Order Arms.

  • This is a four-count
    movement.

  • The command is
    “Right Shoulder, ARMS.”

• At the command of
  execution, count one:

 ~ lift the rifle across your body

 ~ at the same time, take the
   balance in your left hand

 • On the second count:

  ~ release the upper hand
    guard with your right hand

  ~ grasp the heel of the butt

  ~ the thumb and index finger
    touch on top of the stock

  ~ your remaining fingers are joined
    and wrap around the rifle butt

 • On the third count:

  ~ place the rifle on your right
    shoulder without changing
    your grip on the butt

  ~ the sights are up

  ~ the rifle is tilted at an angle
    of 45 degrees to the deck

  ~ held so it points directly fore and aft

    • On the third count (cont.):

     ~ your right elbow is against
       your side, your forearm
       level with the deck
     ~ while placing the rifle on
       your shoulder, allow your
       left hand to slide to the small
       of the stock
     ~ your left hand guides the
       rifle to your shoulder
     ~ keep palm facing to the rear

  • On the fourth count, move
    your left hand smartly to
    your side.

  ~ lift the rifle across your
    body

  ~ at the same time, take the

    hand, elbow held without
    strain and nearly touching
    the hand guard.

NS2 Manual of Arms with NJROTC Drill Rifle

  • 1. CHAPTER 3 MANUAL OF ARMS WITH THE NJROTC DRILL RIFLE
  • 2. Rifle Positions • The balance is the center of your rifle. • Position the rifle diagonally across the body.
  • 3. Rifle Positions (cont.) • Left hand is at the balance, thumb and fingers grasping rifle and sling. • Extend and join fingers to form a “U” with thumb. • The barrel points up at an angle that bisects juncture of neck and shoulders.
  • 4. Rifle Positions (cont.) • The heel of butt is on line with the right hip. • Rifle is held at height that allows right forearm to be parallel to the deck when the small of stock is grasped with right hand. • The distance of rifle from the body should be about 4 inches from your belt.
  • 5. Rifle Positions (cont.) • The cadence of rifle movement is 112 to 120 counts per minute. • While marching at double time, the rifle is held across the body. • The manual of arms for the rifle is taught while halted.
  • 6. Rifle Nomenclature Cadets should study this nomenclature from the Drill Manual, page DM-32.
  • 7. When you are given the commands AT EASE or REST, your right foot remains in place, and the rifle is held as in parade rest with your right arm slightly relaxed.
  • 8. While AT EASE, you may not talk, but while at REST, you may talk softly.
  • 9. PORT, ARMS Purpose: To bring the rifle to a two-handed carry position • A two-count movement • Executed when halted at order arms • The command is, “Port, ARMS.”
  • 10. PORT, ARMS (cont.) On the command “ARMS,” and for the count of one, grasp the rifle with your right hand and raise it diagonally across your chest until your right hand is in front of and slightly left of your face. On the same count, grasp the rifle at the balance with your left hand.
  • 11. PORT, ARMS (cont.) On the second count, move your right hand from the upper hand guard to the small of the stock. Both elbows should be against your sides with your right wrist and forearm straight and parallel to the ground, upper arm in line with your body.
  • 12. PORT, ARMS (cont.) Your rifle should be 4 inches in front of your body. The fingers are joined and wrapped around the rifle, with the thumb wrapped around the opposite side. In the position of port arms, the rifle is held across the body with the butt in front of the right hip.
  • 13. Order Arms from Port Arms • A three-count movement • The command is “Order, ARMS.”
  • 14. Order Arms from Port Arms (cont.) • On the first count: ~ move your right hand smartly from the small of the stock to the upper hand guard ~ the elbow is held without strain and nearly touches the hand guard
  • 15. Order Arms from Port Arms (cont.) • On the second count: ~ release the balance with your left hand and lower the rifle until the butt is three inches from the deck ~ while lowering the rifle, change the grasp with the right hand to the „V‟ position and move your left hand near the stacking swivel
  • 16. Order Arms from Port Arms (cont.) • On the third count: ~ return your left hand smartly to your side ~ lower the butt gently to the deck
  • 17. Port Arms from Left Shoulder Arms • This is a two-count movement. • The command is “Port, ARMS.”
  • 18. Port Arms from Left Shoulder Arms (cont.) • On the command of execution (1st count): ~ grasp the small of the stock with your right hand ~ the right arm is held down without strain
  • 19. Port Arms from Left Shoulder Arms (cont.) • On the second count release the butt with your left hand • At the same time: ~ bring the rifle across your body ~ grasp the balance with your left hand as in Port Arms
  • 20. Order Arms from Left Shoulder Arms • A five-count movement, executed only while halted at attention • The command is “Order, ARMS.”
  • 21. Order Arms from Left Shoulder Arms (cont.) • On the first count: ~ grasp the small of the stock with your right hand ~ the right arm is held down without strain
  • 22. Order Arms from Left Shoulder Arms (cont.) • On the second count release the butt with your left hand • At the same time: ~ bring the rifle across your body ~ grasp the balance with your left hand as in Port Arms
  • 23. Order Arms from Left Shoulder Arms (cont.) • On the third count: ~ move your right hand smartly to from the small of the stock to the upper hand guard ~ the elbow is held without strain and nearly touches the hand guard

  • 28. Left Shoulder Arms from Port Arms (cont.) • On count one (cont.): ~ at the same time grasp the heel of the butt ~ your thumb and index finger touch on top of the stock ~ the remaining fingers are joined and wrap around the rifle butt
  • 29. Left Shoulder Arms from Port Arms (cont.) • On count one (cont.): ~ the rifle is at a 45-degree angle to the deck, sights up ~ keep the rifle pointing directly fore and aft ~ left elbow is against your side ~ left forearm is straight and parallel to the deck, upper arm in line with your back
  • 30. Left Shoulder Arms from Port Arms (cont.) • On count two, drop your right hand smartly to your side.
  • 31. Inspection Arms • This is a four-count movement. • The command is “Inspection, ARMS.”
  • 32. Inspection Arms (cont.) • On counts one and two, come to Port Arms.
  • 33. Inspection Arms (cont.) • On count three, drop your head and look at the cartridge chamber of the rifle.
  • 34. Inspection Arms (cont.) • On count four, raise your head smartly to the position of attention.
  • 35. Attention from Rest Positions • The command is “Squad (Platoon or Company), ATTENTION.” • On “Squad (Platoon or Company),” come to Parade Rest. • On “ATTENTION,” come to Order Arms in one count.
  • 36. Attention from Rest Positions (cont.) • From Fall Out: ~ The command is “FALL IN.” ~ On “FALL IN,” go back to your place in ranks. ~ Come to attention at Order Arms.
  • 37. Right Shoulder Arms from Order Arms • This is a four-count movement. • The command is “Right Shoulder, ARMS.”
  • 38. Right Shoulder Arms from Order Arms (cont.) • At the command of execution, count one: ~ lift the rifle across your body ~ at the same time, take the balance in your left hand
  • 39. Right Shoulder Arms from Order Arms (cont.) • On the second count: ~ release the upper hand guard with your right hand ~ grasp the heel of the butt ~ the thumb and index finger touch on top of the stock ~ your remaining fingers are joined and wrap around the rifle butt
  • 40. Right Shoulder Arms from Order Arms (cont.) • On the third count: ~ place the rifle on your right shoulder without changing your grip on the butt ~ the sights are up ~ the rifle is tilted at an angle of 45 degrees to the deck ~ held so it points directly fore and aft

Right Shoulder Arms from Order Arms (cont.) • On the third count (cont.): ~ your right elbow is against your side, your forearm level with the deck ~ while placing the rifle on your shoulder, allow your left hand to slide to the small of the stock ~ your left hand guides the rifle to your shoulder ~ keep palm facing to the rear
  • 42. Right Shoulder Arms from Order Arms (cont.) • On the fourth count, move your left hand smartly to your side.
  • 43. Order Arms from Right Shoulder Arms • This is a four-count movement. • The command is “Order, ARMS.”
  • 44. Order Arms from Right Shoulder Arms (cont.) • On “ARMS,” the first count: ~ lift the rifle across your body ~ at the same time, take the balance in your left hand
