The purpose of this study is to determine if there were relationships among learning style preference, gender and English language performance of EFL Libyan secondary school students in Malaysia. Specifically, the study was guided by three research questions focused on Libyan student’s level of performance in EFL class in Malaysia, their learning styles and gender, and the relationship between students’ learning styles and their English language performance. There has been a limited number of studies on Libyan secondary schools’ student studying in Malaysia. This study was a correlational study involving 108 Libyan secondary school students in Malaysia. Data was analysed using the statistical package for Social Science (SPSS, version 20.0). The results showed that most learners who participated in this study had a medium proficiency level in the English language and majority of the Libyan students preferred independent learning style. It was found that there was a difference in the learning styles preferred by female and male secondary school students. The study also revealed that there was no significant relationship between students’ overall learning styles and their English language performance and. Recommendations were offered. Future researches could use more than one school to obtain accurate results and could also focus on gender biases.

This research is conducted towards the students of non-English major with visual learning style and writing preference. There are 14 students, which are taken to be the respondents. Questionnaires are the instrument used to gather the data in this research. This research employs descriptive qualitative method in analyzing the data. The result portrays that 3 major findings: (1) most of the students find it difficult to accomplish the oral English test which is natural and normal due to their preference skill in writing, (2) in spite of the difficulty of the oral English test, the majority of the students consider the test to be challenging, accommodating and satisfying (3) a large number of the students get the benefit from the effectiveness of the feedback that they get in the form of rubrics.

The use of grammar teaching in the field of second language acquisition has been extensively studied, but there is a lacuna in the literature, regarding the students’ perception of its importance. To investigate this aspect, the study was conducted on a group of 15 students studying in Semester Five, in the English Language Department of Misurata University, Libya. The students were interviewed in groups of three with nine specific questions, and the responses were audio-taped and transcribed verbatim. The findings revealed that although they all came from the same cultural, linguistic and educational backgrounds, they had different perceptions regarding the form focused instruction of grammar. The information gathered is of considerable significance to ESL teachers who intend to meet students’ needs as well as reduce conflicts caused by different perspectives between teachers and students regarding whether or not grammar teaching should be encouraged in the classroom.

1 How Does the Use of Reading Strategies Improve Achievement in Science for Language Minority Students? Shannon Hicok Glasgow Middle School Fairfax County (VA) Public Schools Submitted June 2000 Introduction Two years ago, I began teaching science at Ellen Glasgow Middle School in Fairfax County, Virginia. I realized right away that my language minority students, especially those still in an English as a Second Language (ESL) program, needed differentiated instruction in their mainstreamed science class. The question then became, “How do I meet the unique needs of this population?” This is a question with which I have continued to struggle over the past two years. I recognized that my ESL students had a great deal of difficulty reading their science textbook. Although some students had success with pronunciation and word recognition, adequate comprehension eluded them. Working with an ESL teacher, I began to make accommodations in my instruction that seemed to increase understanding during whole class and small group activities. However, I was still puzzled as to how to help these students during lessons that required individual reading. In the 1999-2000 school year, I have had the privilege of working with a small group of researchers who also teach language minority students. During discussion, we agreed that improving literacy for these students should be our primary goal and the focus of our research. Based on the difficulty my students have experienced with reading comprehension, this is the piece of the literacy puzzle on which I have focused. Purpose of the Study The purpose of this study was to identify how the implementation of various reading strategies improved achievement in science for ESL students. I was particularly interested in their use in the science classroom. Using data collected from this study, I hoped to make better decisions about the type of instruction my language minority students needed. The end result was more confident, successful learners. Scientific vocabulary development is an area in which language minority students historically struggle. In addition to learning new technical terminology, students must deal with the varied use of familiar terms. For instance, in science class, the words table and compound have a very different meaning than they do in most other classrooms (Chamot, 1994). For these reasons, I decided that one of the strategies chosen for the study would specifically target vocabulary development. 2 The remainder of the strategies chosen for the study were intended to help make reading a more active endeavor. I chose these strategies with the hopes that they would help students comprehend written, scientific, factual material. Literature Review Much research has been done regarding the effectiveness of using learning strategies to promote literacy. Running head: THE EFFECTIVENESS OF NARRATIVE INPUT CHARTS 1 The Effectiveness of Using a Narrative Input Chart on Learning Advanced Vocabulary Student Name EDGR 601 Instructor: Instructor Name A Literature Survey Presented to The Graduate Program in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements For the Degree of Masters in Education Concordia University - Portland May, 2012 THE EFFECTIVENESS OF NARRATIVE INPUT CHARTS 2 Literature Review This literature review was undertaken in an effort to investigate the question: how does the use of narrative input charts improve the understanding of advanced science vocabulary among seventh grade science students? In order for students to be ready for entry level college coursework they must have excellent reading comprehension skills. The relationship between vocabulary knowledge and reading comprehension is herein considered. Additionally, ineffective and effective vocabulary instruction strategies are described. In 2005, ACT college admissions test results showed that high school students in the United States do not have the reading comprehension skills needed for entry level college coursework (ACT, Inc. 2006). According to the 2005 ACT-scores for high school graduates, 51% were ready for college level reading (ACT, Inc. 2006). The percentage of college readiness was even lower for some groups. It is known that 49% of male students demonstrated readiness and 33% of students with family incomes less than $30, 000/year demonstrated readiness. Minority student’s scores were low as well. The results showed that 21% African American, 33% Hispanic, and 36% Native American students met the readiness benchmark for reading (ACT, Inc. 2006). ACT further reports that since 1996 scores have steadily declined resulting in the 51% being the lowest in the past twelve years (ACT, Inc. 2006). The Relationship between Vocabulary Knowledge and Reading Comprehension In this literature review the relationship between the acquisition of academic vocabulary and improved reading comprehension is examined. The purpose of learning new words is to improve reading comprehension (Beck, McKowen & Kucan, 2008). Many research studies THE EFFECTIVENESS OF NARRATIVE INPUT CHARTS 3 conducted over the course of many years have concluded that acquiring rich and varied vocabulary is critical in improving student reading comprehension (National Governors Association Center for Best Practices, Council of Chief State School Officers, 2010). Harmon, Hedrick and Wood (2005) report that student difficulty in understanding their textbooks results from a lack of vocabulary knowledge. It has been shown that students that received high scores on vocabulary tests also scored high on reading comprehension tests. It is also known that early vocabulary knowledge can predict reading comprehension skills well into high school (Beck et al., 2008). Of g ...

The aims of this study are firstly to find out whether tasks that are designed based on the students’ learning style specification are compatible with students’ language achievements, and secondly to find out factors that might affect the language achievements and the learning styles. The research was undertaken in 6 private tertiary educations involving first year students who learn English as a compulsory subject at these institutions. A 40-item questionnaire adapted from Yufrizal (2007) was distrubuted to 380 students resulting students with four learning styles: communicative, concrete, authority oriented and analytic. One group repeated measures design was carried out in this research. The students are taught and tested in four different assignment adjusted to their learning styles. The results show that there is a congruency between students’ learning style and their designed tasks. Students with communicative learning style were more dominant in conversation and students with analytic learning style were more dominant in tasks that required language analytical skill. Furthermore, gender seemed to be an important factor that contribute to the students’ language achievement and learning styles.
