Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM)
City of El Paso
April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM), and the
Women's Fund of El Center for Civic Engagement encourages you to support the
Paso UTEP Women's Resource Center by joining them in speaking
out against sexual violence. Below is a link containing a list of
Volunteer Action April events aimed at educating the UTEP community on the
Center subject of sexual assault, and creating a network of advocacy
here on campus. Please read through it and plan on coming out

Join AmeriCorps and work part-time during your school year
with immigrant elders across the city of El Paso. Project SHINE
is seeking UTEP students to share and learn cultural traditions,
tutor in ESL, provide health services, and support community
groups.
WHO?
Project SHINE is a national service learning program that
creates intergenerational relationships with immigrant and
refugee elders through language, health literacy and
citizenship tutoring.
WHAT?
Members will promote a healthy community by tutoring English,
health workshops, screenings and various recreational
activities such as exercise or knitting classes that strengthen
social connections.
WHERE?
Members will be matched with one of 20 sites in El Paso.
WHY?
Members will work in multicultural, diverse teams, gain
leadership experience, improve the lives of hundreds of elders
across the city and meet those who are eager to share their
own cultures. Being an AmeriCorps member with SHINE is a
part of the Serve America Act. This act calls Americans to
SHINE serve and reauthorizes and expands national service
programs administered by the Corporation for National and
Community Service
HOW?
AmeriCorps members will serve part-time (8-10 hours per
week) for 9 months (starting February 2010). Training will be
provided. Members will tutor English, share and learn cultural
traditions, help provide health services, and support to local
community groups.
Members will receive a $1,500 stipend and
a $1,000 end-of-term education award.
