In-country training South-East Asia
• In 2011, UNOSAT and ADPC have launched a regional initiative
to develop the capacity of countries across the Asia and
Pacific region
• In 2013, UNOSAT teamed with UN ESCAP for further training
and capacity development
• The partnership focuses on strengthening capacities of
national disaster risk management professionals on the use of
geospatial information technology for risk assessment and
emergency response mapping
• Regional Training in Bangkok (GIS4DRM) in collabration with
AIT, ITC and ADPC. Additional training and support in
partnership with UN ESCAP

IGAD training needs assessment
Respondents from IGAD ( ICPALD, CEWARN, ICPAC, IGAD-
Somalia, IGAD-Secretariat ,>20)
80% of respondents are working in DRR related field
100% of respondents fully recognized the benefit for IGAD
to strengthening technical capacities in the use of geo-
spatial information technology.
Regarding GIS/RS skills, 70% of respondents have no or
only basic knowledge of GIS/RS.
Data access, management, visualization and sharing
was identified as a key aspect to be addressed during
the implementation of UNOSAT-IGAD capacity development
project..
“NO CAPACITIES CAN BE STREGHTEN AND ANY KNOWLEDGE CAN BE SHARED
WITHOUT A CLEAR UNDERSTANDING ON THE NEEDS AND EXPECTATIONS
OF BENEFICIARIES”.

Added value for the Post 2015 Framework for
Disaster Risk Reduction
• How did your work support the implementation of the Hyogo
Framework for Action:
– By transferring knowledge on the use of technology for DRR to key
stakeholders
– By ensuring operational services as per requests from Member States
• From your perspective what are the main gaps, needs and further
steps to be addressed in the Post 2015 Framework for Disaster Risk
Reduction in
– Research: Need to transfer knowledge and work with national research
centres
– Education & Training: Few specialists in GIT, large gaps to be filled, brain
drain
– Implementation & Practice: Need to move from short term projects to
longer term true capacity development
– Policy: Lack of awareness leads to lack of policy and legal frameworks
