Executive Summary
A survey on the concept of the internship program and MSc program has been prepared, taking into account
the conclusions of the WP2 held last June 2014 in Barcelona.
The main conclusion of the workshop was to work towards the preparation of an ERASMUS+ proposal
comprising both concepts integrated on a global perspective and coordinated with KIC InnoEnergy
educational programs, industry & research partners, as well as business creation activities.
The articulation of the proposal is being made with a taskforce composed of:
• A representative of KIC InnoEnergy EDU.
• A representative of the Moroccan Universities.
• A representative of the Tunisian Universities.
• Representatives of WP2 partners (UPC, KIC InnoEnergy, IRESEN R&D Maroc, ANME).
This is an initial inherent assumption in the sense that the future industrial internship program and the MSc
program will be structured as mobility programs, based in international cooperation and with an additional
scope for the symmetry in the participation of EU and MPC (Maghreb Partner Countries).
However, there are still a number of variables to be considered in the detailed design of such programs.
These variables have been explored with the answers of the experts consulted by means of the survey.
The main findings are summarized below.
MSc program
• Preferred candidates: engineers (chemical, electrical, energy, mechanical).
• Selection based essentially on a personal interview (touch or Skype-like) and the English level.
• Duration: preferred 2 years (120 ECTS).
• Mobility should be mandatory.
• Content of the syllabus: tech transversal, innovation and management.
• Vision of the MSc, more oriented to the professional side vs the research side.
• Optimal number of students in the classroom: between 10 and 20.
Approaching the KPIs
The transition phase from the current situation to the future internship and MSc programs is determined by
the application to the ERASMUS+ proposal to be done in 2015.

This means that, in practical terms, the MAGHRENOV partners and associated partners are going to work
towards a smooth transition.
The first actions are oriented, as suggested by the MAGHRENOV application and relevant organisations like
the UfM (Union for the Mediterranean), to bidirectional collaboration focusing on a symmetry scheme EU-
MPC.
Accordingly, the current programs running in EU (especially in KIC InnoEnergy, but not restricted to) and
the current international programs running in Morocco and Tunisia are taken into consideration for the
period 2014-2015. This is going to be done for the different levels considered in the MAGHRENOV proposal:
MSc, PhD and post-doc.
In practical terms, the results of the MAGHRENOV project, as the new industrial internship program and the
new MSc program will be able to be fully evaluated in 2016.

2 Objectives and Hypotheses
The main objective is the development of a MSc program. In order to do so, two partial objectives have
been defined:
• Definition of the working hypothesis or, equivalently, the boundary conditions for the new program.
• Definition of a strategy for elaborating the MSc program and to run it accordingly until the end of
the project.
The working hypotheses are as follows:
1. The program should be implementable in EU countries and Maghreb countries, in order to keep the
concept of symmetry, as stated in the MAGHRENOV proposal and by relevant institutions like the
Union for the Mediterranean.
2. The program should be defined in such a way to be compatible with existing MSc programs in
partners or associated partners to MAGHRENOV.
3. The program should be defined as being part of an application to the ERASMUS+ program in 2015.
4. The program should be used as a tool to improve the cooperation EU-MPC in the field. This means
that the existing programs (at the time being, 2014) should converge to the new one in the medium
term and long term.
5. The program implementation should be sustainable in the long term, even when the eventual
ERASMUS+ funding is over.
6. A contingency plan must be done to cover the eventuality that no ERASMUS+ funding is achieved in
2015.
Similarly, the strategy for the elaboration of the proposal is based on a methodology starting on the
establishment of a working group, with relevant representatives from the different actors:
• A representative of KIC InnoEnergy EDU.
• A representative of the Moroccan Universities.
• A representative of the Tunisian Universities.
• Representatives of WP2 partners (UPC, KIC InnoEnergy, IRESEN, R&D Maroc, ANME). These are the
regular representatives in WP2.
The role of the three representatives is to interact with the partners in each area and to be the speaker of
the different messages in the taskforce. The partners and associated partners have agreed in such a
scheme.
Once the taskforce has been defined, the meetings of the taskforce have been oriented to the development
and analysis of the results of the survey for a new MSc program (an Annex is included with this
information). In previous meetings (December 2013 and June 2014 in Barcelona) and in the meetings of the
new taskforce, different existing programs have been reviewed. An annex is also included with this
information.

3 Analysis of the Current Situation
This analysis was initially performed in the document MAGHRENOV D2.1 and it is complemented in this one,
as can be seen in Annex 8.
This Annex includes the KIC InnoEnergy MSc programs in the thematic of renewable energy (RENE), energy
efficiency or being transversal, as it is the case of SELECT and ENTECH.
Additionally, the program from University Mohammed V in Morocco has also been included.
There is a strong coincidence of the blocks of the different programs, since all of them are 2 year
programs, based on a content of 120 ECTS and having a MSc thesis around 60 ECTS. All these boundary
conditions are specially true in the case of KIC InnoEnergy programs, since they fulfil the so-called EIT label
conditions, expected to be a standard in the near future in higher education in Europe.
The structure of the programs is always based on:
• Year 1 focused on transversal courses on renewable energy/energy efficiency, combined with some
courses on related skills, like innovation, entrepreneurship and other added-value topics.
• Year 2 is focused on the specialisation chosen by the student in the first semester and on the MSc
thesis on the second semester.
This scheme makes possible the international mobility in a very structured way.
The proposal in Section 5 will focus on the experience and lessons learned in KIC InnoEnergy educational
programs.

5 MSc Program
The integration of the results in the previous sections makes possible the design of the new MSc program.
According to the hypothesis of the approach listed in Section 2, the modularity of the proposal results to be
crucial in order to:
• Make possible a migration from the existing situation to the desired strong cooperation among
programs in EU and MPC.
• Facilitate the mobility of the students among different programs, resulting in a simple and clear
scheme for double degree recognition.
• The adoption of EIT label requirements looks like a good strategy since this will become a standard
in the near future in international higher education. This means that MPC Universities will probably
have to make an additional effort in this direction. Anyhow, the expected results can motivate the
effort.
• The preparation of an ERASMUS+ proposal is much easier if a modular structure is identified.
Subsequently, the evaluators should be comfortable about this approach.
• Multilateral cooperation among different universities (a relevant number of it) becomes simpler.
Subsequently, the proposal is as follows in Table I. 30 ECTS is equivalent to a semester, 60 ECTS to a full
year.
Year 1 (60 ECTS) Basic courses on technology (40
ECTS)
Basic courses on innovation,
entrepreneurship and more
added-value topics (20 ECTS)
University 1 (MPC or EU)
Year 2 (60 ECTS)
Specialisation (30 ECTS)
University 2 (EU or MPC)
MSc thesis / internship (30 ECTS)
Table 1: Block Scheme for the MSc Program
International mobility is welcome, as it is stated in Table I. The mobility is considered as EU-MPC and vice
versa.
MAGHRENOV D2.3 explains in detail the concept of the industrial internship program in MAGHRENOV and
the option for the integration of such internship with the MSc thesis is presented and argumented.
D2.4 Detailed MSc Program
© MAGHRENOV Consortium Version 1.0 - 29/09/201414
The MSc program is also the natural program to be integrated in the future ERASMUS+ proposal. Such a
proposal is crucial to make possible the start of the new program with proper funding for:
• Offering scholarships.
• Creating courses in collaboration among the different Universities.
• Define added-value activities for the students. KIC InnoEnergy programs show a high degree of
experience in this field, with a number of different activities, among others:
o Summer school, focused to intensive innovation and entrepreneurship training in a business
school.
o Technological seminars with the participation of experts from the industry and research
centres and making the students of all Universities to meet and to network all together. A
tool for fostering experiences.
o Co-creation seminars, to stimulate the innovation spirit.
o Creation of common courses.
o MOOC-based training.
o Etc.
• Exchange of professors, especially important in EU-MPC actions. The experience of EU programs is
being quite successful in making possible the contacts among teachers from different EU countries.
However this is not the case in the EU-MPC cooperation.
The design and operational experience of KIC InnoEnergy will be used for the implementation of the MSc
program.
For instance, the strategy to incorporate industries in the different phases of the MSc program can be the
same:
• Design of the syllabus and the content.
• Promotion of the MSc.
• Participation in the selection process.
• Teaching some contents of the program.
• Offering internships/MSc thesis.
• Offering scholarships.
• Involvement in job recruitment.
As stated above, the selection process of the candidate for the MSc will be crucial for the reputation of the
MSc. KIC InnoEnergy has also experience on that side and the typical admission criteria in any program:
• Type of bachelor degree (engineering or similar).
• Quality of the University for the bachelor degree.
• Marks.
• English level.
D2.4 Detailed MSc Program
© MAGHRENOV Consortium Version 1.0 - 29/09/201415
It is also relevant, the assessment of the innovation and entrepreneurship spirit of the candidates, in order
to make possible to have excellent candidates be able to become “game changers” for the future of the
relations MPC-EU, the ultimate goal of MAGHRENOV.
A contingency plan for the case that the ERASMUS+ application is not successful is also made. Plan B is the
preparation of a second application for year 2016. On top of that, of course, all the funding sources will be
taken into consideration for making more aggressive the results of the program, significantly:
• ERASMUS+ (as cited).
• KIC InnoEnergy.
• National and regional funding.
• Industry and research centre-based funding.
• Self-paying students.
On this point it is relevant to mention the synergy with an internal KIC InnoEnergy project, working towards
the sustainability of KIC InnoEnergy educational programs. Accordingly, this is a remarkable coincidence,
since such a project, expected to be finished at the end of 2014, may provide good results for MAGHRENOV
as well.

6 Conclusion
The main conclusions about the MSc program definition are:
• Modularity to make possible the compatibility among the current programs.
• Preparation of an ERASMUS+ proposal in 2015, incorporating KIC InnoEnergy programs, MPC
programs and open to other similar programs in EU.

  • 4. D2.4 Detailed MSc Program © MAGHRENOV Consortium Version 1.0 - 29/09/20144 Executive Summary A survey on the concept of the internship program and MSc program has been prepared, taking into account the conclusions of the WP2 held last June 2014 in Barcelona. The main conclusion of the workshop was to work towards the preparation of an ERASMUS+ proposal comprising both concepts integrated on a global perspective and coordinated with KIC InnoEnergy educational programs, industry & research partners, as well as business creation activities. The articulation of the proposal is being made with a taskforce composed of: • A representative of KIC InnoEnergy EDU. • A representative of the Moroccan Universities. • A representative of the Tunisian Universities. • Representatives of WP2 partners (UPC, KIC InnoEnergy, IRESEN R&D Maroc, ANME). This is an initial inherent assumption in the sense that the future industrial internship program and the MSc program will be structured as mobility programs, based in international cooperation and with an additional scope for the symmetry in the participation of EU and MPC (Maghreb Partner Countries). However, there are still a number of variables to be considered in the detailed design of such programs. These variables have been explored with the answers of the experts consulted by means of the survey. The main findings are summarized below. MSc program • Preferred candidates: engineers (chemical, electrical, energy, mechanical). Approaching the KPIs The transition phase from the current situation to the future internship and MSc programs is determined by the application to the ERASMUS+ proposal to be done in 2015.
  • 5. D2.4 Detailed MSc Program © MAGHRENOV Consortium Version 1.0 - 29/09/20145 This means that, in practical terms, the MAGHRENOV partners and associated partners are going to work towards a smooth transition. The first actions are oriented, as suggested by the MAGHRENOV application and relevant organisations like the UfM (Union for the Mediterranean), to bidirectional collaboration focusing on a symmetry scheme EU- MPC. Accordingly, the current programs running in EU (especially in KIC InnoEnergy, but not restricted to) and the current international programs running in Morocco and Tunisia are taken into consideration for the period 2014-2015. This is going to be done for the different levels considered in the MAGHRENOV proposal: MSc, PhD and post-doc. In practical terms, the results of the MAGHRENOV project, as the new industrial internship program and the new MSc program will be able to be fully evaluated in 2016.
  • 6. • 7. D2.4 Detailed MSc Program © MAGHRENOV Consortium Version 1.0 - 29/09/20147 2 Objectives and Hypotheses The main objective is the development of a MSc program. In order to do so, two partial objectives have been defined: • Definition of the working hypothesis or, equivalently, the boundary conditions for the new program. • Definition of a strategy for elaborating the MSc program and to run it accordingly until the end of the project. The working hypotheses are as follows: 1. The program should be implementable in EU countries and Maghreb countries, in order to keep the concept of symmetry, as stated in the MAGHRENOV proposal and by relevant institutions like the Union for the Mediterranean. 2. The program should be defined in such a way to be compatible with existing MSc programs in partners or associated partners to MAGHRENOV. 3. The program should be defined as being part of an application to the ERASMUS+ program in 2015. 4. The program should be used as a tool to improve the cooperation EU-MPC in the field. This means that the existing programs (at the time being, 2014) should converge to the new one in the medium term and long term. 5. The program implementation should be sustainable in the long term, even when the eventual ERASMUS+ funding is over. 6. A contingency plan must be done to cover the eventuality that no ERASMUS+ funding is achieved in 2015. Similarly, the strategy for the elaboration of the proposal is based on a methodology starting on the establishment of a working group, with relevant representatives from the different actors: • A representative of KIC InnoEnergy EDU. • A representative of the Moroccan Universities. • A representative of the Tunisian Universities. • Representatives of WP2 partners (UPC, KIC InnoEnergy, IRESEN, R&D Maroc, ANME). These are the regular representatives in WP2. The role of the three representatives is to interact with the partners in each area and to be the speaker of the different messages in the taskforce. The partners and associated partners have agreed in such a scheme. Once the taskforce has been defined, the meetings of the taskforce have been oriented to the development and analysis of the results of the survey for a new MSc program (an Annex is included with this information). In previous meetings (December 2013 and June 2014 in Barcelona) and in the meetings of the new taskforce, different existing programs have been reviewed. An annex is also included with this information.
  • 8. D2.4 Detailed MSc Program © MAGHRENOV Consortium Version 1.0 - 29/09/20148 3 Analysis of the Current Situation This analysis was initially performed in the document MAGHRENOV D2.1 and it is complemented in this one, as can be seen in Annex 8. This Annex includes the KIC InnoEnergy MSc programs in the thematic of renewable energy (RENE), energy efficiency or being transversal, as it is the case of SELECT and ENTECH. Additionally, the program from University Mohammed V in Morocco has also been included. There is a strong coincidence of the blocks of the different programs, since all of them are 2 year programs, based on a content of 120 ECTS and having a MSc thesis around 60 ECTS. All these boundary conditions are specially true in the case of KIC InnoEnergy programs, since they fulfil the so-called EIT label conditions, expected to be a standard in the near future in higher education in Europe. The structure of the programs is always based on: • Year 1 focused on transversal courses on renewable energy/energy efficiency, combined with some courses on related skills, like innovation, entrepreneurship and other added-value topics. • Year 2 is focused on the specialisation chosen by the student in the first semester and on the MSc thesis on the second semester. This scheme makes possible the international mobility in a very structured way. The proposal in Section 5 will focus on the experience and lessons learned in KIC InnoEnergy educational programs.

  • 13. D2.4 Detailed MSc Program © MAGHRENOV Consortium Version 1.0 - 29/09/201413 5 MSc Program The integration of the results in the previous sections makes possible the design of the new MSc program. According to the hypothesis of the approach listed in Section 2, the modularity of the proposal results to be crucial in order to: • Make possible a migration from the existing situation to the desired strong cooperation among programs in EU and MPC. • Facilitate the mobility of the students among different programs, resulting in a simple and clear scheme for double degree recognition. • The adoption of EIT label requirements looks like a good strategy since this will become a standard in the near future in international higher education. This means that MPC Universities will probably have to make an additional effort in this direction. Anyhow, the expected results can motivate the effort. 30 ECTS is equivalent to a semester, 60 ECTS to a full year. Year 1 (60 ECTS) Basic courses on technology (40 ECTS) Basic courses on innovation, entrepreneurship and more added-value topics (20 ECTS) University 1 (MPC or EU) Year 2 (60 ECTS) Specialisation (30 ECTS) University 2 (EU or MPC) MSc thesis / internship (30 ECTS) Table 1: Block Scheme for the MSc Program International mobility is welcome, as it is stated in Table I. The mobility is considered as EU-MPC and vice versa. MAGHRENOV D2.3 explains in detail the concept of the industrial internship program in MAGHRENOV and the option for the integration of such internship with the MSc thesis is presented and argumented.
  • 14. D2.4 Detailed MSc Program © MAGHRENOV Consortium Version 1.0 - 29/09/201414 The MSc program is also the natural program to be integrated in the future ERASMUS+ proposal. Such a proposal is crucial to make possible the start of the new program with proper funding for: • Offering scholarships. • Creating courses in collaboration among the different Universities. • Define added-value activities for the students. KIC InnoEnergy programs show a high degree of experience in this field, with a number of different activities, among others: o Summer school, focused to intensive innovation and entrepreneurship training in a business school. o Technological seminars with the participation of experts from the industry and research centres and making the students of all Universities to meet and to network all together. A tool for fostering experiences. o Co-creation seminars, to stimulate the innovation spirit. o Creation of common courses. o MOOC-based training. o Etc. • Exchange of professors, especially important in EU-MPC actions. The experience of EU programs is being quite successful in making possible the contacts among teachers from different EU countries. However this is not the case in the EU-MPC cooperation. The design and operational experience of KIC InnoEnergy will be used for the implementation of the MSc program. For instance, the strategy to incorporate industries in the different phases of the MSc program can be the same: • Design of the syllabus and the content. • Promotion of the MSc. • Participation in the selection process. • Teaching some contents of the program. • Offering internships/MSc thesis. • Offering scholarships. • Involvement in job recruitment. As stated above, the selection process of the candidate for the MSc will be crucial for the reputation of the MSc. KIC InnoEnergy has also experience on that side and the typical admission criteria in any program: • Type of bachelor degree (engineering or similar). • Quality of the University for the bachelor degree. • Marks. • English level.
  • 15. D2.4 Detailed MSc Program © MAGHRENOV Consortium Version 1.0 - 29/09/201415 It is also relevant, the assessment of the innovation and entrepreneurship spirit of the candidates, in order to make possible to have excellent candidates be able to become “game changers” for the future of the relations MPC-EU, the ultimate goal of MAGHRENOV. A contingency plan for the case that the ERASMUS+ application is not successful is also made. Plan B is the preparation of a second application for year 2016. On top of that, of course, all the funding sources will be taken into consideration for making more aggressive the results of the program, significantly: • ERASMUS+ (as cited). • KIC InnoEnergy. • National and regional funding. • Industry and research centre-based funding. • Self-paying students. On this point it is relevant to mention the synergy with an internal KIC InnoEnergy project, working towards the sustainability of KIC InnoEnergy educational programs. Accordingly, this is a remarkable coincidence, since such a project, expected to be finished at the end of 2014, may provide good results for MAGHRENOV as well.
  • 16. D2.4 Detailed MSc Program © MAGHRENOV Consortium Version 1.0 - 29/09/201416 6 Conclusion The main conclusions about the MSc program definition are: • Modularity to make possible the compatibility among the current programs. • Preparation of an ERASMUS+ proposal in 2015, incorporating KIC InnoEnergy programs, MPC programs and open to other similar programs in EU.
