The ability to solve problems and think critically is more important than ever, making critical thinking a crucial skill for 21st century students. This presentation covers strategies and best practices for teaching this transferable skill in a way that mimics real-world learning environments. The presenter explores innovative uses of social media and instructional technologies as a vehicle for designing authentic activities that encourage critical thinking in the classroom and beyond. Keynote presentation given to educators at the 2017 Central Alberta Teachers Convention. The vast majority of our students enter our schools in kindergarten with high motivation to learn but as they progress up through the grades, motivation and engagement tends to fade. Due to the many challenges facing our schools, educators often resort to a variety of incentives to try to motivate students to learn and improve behaviour to help create the optimal learning environment. Schools also try to encourage students to excel by offering certificates, plaques, and trophies to those who do better than others. The use of rewards can become part of a school culture and awards are generally steeped in tradition… but what if we have this extrinsic motivation strategy all wrong? What if these tactics work in the short term but cause problems in the long term? What if there are students that go through our schools with strengths that are not valued nor honoured? Is there a better way to create the conditions for long-term motivation? Is there a way to move away from awards so more students are honoured, more students feel connected, and there is a more positive, inclusive school culture?

As liberal arts colleges and universities consider their missions and contemplate the future, significant challenges lie ahead—financial sustainability, increased competition and public perception of value to name a few. Yet many opportunities lie waiting, too—new technologies and digital tools enable faculty and students to traverse many boundaries, increasing access and furthering support of scholarship and learning. Project DAVID uses a set of themes—distinction, analytics, value, innovation, and digital opportunities—to guide leadership through the various factors, forces, and challenges they face and consider how they might reinvent themselves. In this seminar Ann Hill Duin, professor at the University of Minnesota, founder of Project DAVID and a NITLE Fellow along with contributors to the Project DAVID eBook -- Elizabeth Brennan, Associate Professor and Director of Special Education Programs, California Lutheran University; Ty Buckman, Professor of English and Associate Provost for Undergraduate Affairs & Curriculum, Wittenberg University; Autumm Caines, Academic Technology Specialist, Capital University; and, Wen-Li Feng, Curriculum Technology Specialist, Capital University -- outlines how they are using these themes to examine current challenges and opportunities and to design their futures.

Visiting Lecture: Plymouth College of Arts In this first of our series of visiting lectures, Debbie Holley, Professor of Learning Innovation at Bournemouth University challenges us to explore the boundaries of the digital, while still ensuring that our own digital health and wellbeing is protected, along with that of our students. Debbie will share examples of her work leading teams embedding creativity (online) through the disciplines, with considerations for the health and wellbeing for all. We will conclude the talk with a panel discussion about how we may like to take some of the ideas forward. The event will be recorded, and the slides shared. Debbie has requested that you bring along your SMART (internet connected) mobile phones, but emphasises this workshop is suitable for all. Dr Ben Goldsmith, from the Bournemouth University learning technology team, will join us to talk about what is possible at the panel! Debbie is a National Teaching Fellow, a Principle Fellow of AdvanceHE and on the JISC student experience experts panel. She has research interests in digital competence frameworks, augmented reality, virtual reality and simulations. Ben is a Learning Technologist at Bournemouth University and a Fellow of AdvanceHE. His research interests include digital and media literacy, the use of media and digital content and tools in secondary and tertiary education, and the engagement of critical theory with approaches to learning. Presentation at Confab Higher Ed 2017 in Indianapolis, Indiana. This is an updated version of the IA Summit 2017 presentation, including impact measurements not available during the IA Summit presentation. After a major overhaul three years ago, the University of Michigan Medical School’s flagship website for prospective students was getting glowing feedback. Great news, right? But … now what? What comes after “good”? This talk presents a case study of how we dug in to a new round of user research to deepen our understanding of the application journey of prospective medical students and present the next iteration of an already successful site. With the journalist’s question of “what did you know, when?” we mapped the information-seeking behavior of prospective students, and learned how the lens of time could give us new insights into how to organize and present information to users.
