6. Author Foreword
The gastroesophageal reflux disease or GERD is an illness that can affect
generations of people that belong to the same family, a lot of whom may lead
for long a life in pain, as its symptoms may remind them of something else; a
less serious disease.
My book comes as a practical guide to all those people who suffer from GERD.
It is a common illness and it usually occurs when the lower esophageal
sphincter isn’t functioning correctly. That can make the patient feel extreme
pain in the chest in some cases, while in others it develops different, but no
less painful symptoms.

8. What is GERD?
The Center for Women’s Health tells the story of Gloria, a 53-year-old woman
who was experiencing a burning in her chest. She felt like she always had a
lump in her throat, and an acidic taste in the back of her mouth. Sound
unpleasant? Gloria had been dealing with this not for a few days or weeks,
but for several years. After a while, she started to worry that these were
symptoms of a serious problem, like heart disease, so she saw her doctor.
Fortunately, her doctor told her that her symptoms were not indicative of
heart disease, but that she was most likely experiencing GERD.

9. Emergency 7-Day Treatment
Strategies
Before laying out the full plan for managing your gastroesophageal reflux disease,
I’ll provide you with a short plan that will help you cure (or at least very
significantly reduce) your symptoms. Heartburn is a painful and irritating thing,
and when you’re suffering from it, you want to act fast—so here are some fast tips
for getting rid of your symptoms quickly. Of course, this is only a temporary
treatment. While all of these points will hold true during your long-term
management of acid reflux, there’s a lot more to it, and you should continue with
the holistic treatment plan outlined in chapter 3. However, this is a good place to
start, and should have you feeling better within a week. Also, it’s important to
note that while this is called an ‘emergency treatment’ plan, it’s not for any sort of
medical emergency. If you’re feeling neck or chest pain due to your heartburn, or
you have serious issues with your GERD, contact an emergency medical provider
or call 911 immediately.

10. Holistic Treatment Plan
Dietary changes are at the heart of natural treatments for GERD. This makes
sense, as the primary function of both the esophagus and the stomach have to do
with food, so food is likely to play a significant role both in the disorder and in the
treatment. Although making dietary changes isn’t easy, we have provided you
with a guide that will walk you through the key points of how to do it, as well as a
sample meal plan and some recipes that will help you get on track.
In addition to dietary changes, however, there are several other lifestyle changes
that you will have to make in order to get your body—and your mind—back in
balance. Because this is a holistic treatment, it will get at the causes of your GERD,
and this will require making many changes to your lifestyle, and this might be
difficult; but you’ll find that it’s worth it.

11. Other Alternative Treatments
In addition to the above listed emergency 7-day plan and the holistic
treatment plan, there are a few other ways that you can ease your GERD
symptoms and help address the causes. Some people find these alternative
treatments to be very effective, while others find that they don’t help at all. It
depends totally on your symptoms and your body. If you feel that you could
use an extra boost in your treatment, I encourage you to look into some of
these options and make enquiries with local providers to see what they can
offer you.
