1. Muhammad and Torture
When Muhammad, the Prophet of Islam, wished to attack the Meccan army at Badr, his
men captured two slaves who were carrying water for the caravans and brought them into
his presence.
They were interrogated under torture as Muhammad stood praying nearby!

‫فأتوا بهما فسألوهما ، ورسول ال صلى ال عليه وسلم قائم يصلي ، فقال : نحن سقاة قريش ، بعثونا نسقيهم من‬
، ‫الماء . فكره القوم خبرهما ، ورجوا أن يكونا لبي سفيان ، فضربوهما . فلما أذلقوهما قال : نحن لبي سفيان‬

..they brought them along and questioned them while the apostle was standing
praying. They said, 'We are the watermen of Quraysh; they sent us to get them
water.' The people were displeased at their report, for they had hoped that they
would belong to Abu Sufyan, so they beat them, and when they had beaten them
soundly, the two men said, 'We belong to Abu Sufyan,' so they let them go.

When Muhammad sent his army to overrun the peaceful farming community of
Khaybar*, he was not satisfied with the plunder and felt that the town’s treasurer might
be holding out on him.
So he gave orders to al-Zubayr: "Torture him until you extract what he has."

...some of the treasure was found. When he asked him about the rest he refused to
produce it, so the apostle gave orders to al-Zubayr b. al-'Awwam, "Torture him
until you extract what he has.' so he kindled a fire with flint and stone on his chest
until he was nearly dead.

When one of his men was killed and mutilated* by the Qurayshites, Muhammad said:
"I will mutilate thirty of their men"

If God gives me victory over Quraysh in the future I will mutilate 30 of their men.'
When the Muslims saw the apostle's grief and anger against who had thus treated
his uncle, they said, 'By God, if God gives us victory over them in the future we will
mutilate them as no Arab has ever mutilated anyone' (613).

During the year 628 A.D., eight men from the tribe of 'Ukil, came to Medina. They
became Muslims.
While they were there they got sick. Muhammad prescribed a medicine for them; he told
them to drink camel milk and camel urine.
After the men got better they killed the shepherd of the camels, turned apostates and stole
the camels.
Muhammad sent an armed party of 20 men after them. They were caught and brought
back to Medina.
Rather than simply carry out an eye-for-an-eye killing, Muhammad ordered that the men
be executed slowly in the most physically agonizing manner...
Their eyes were branded with hot irons, then plucked out.
Their hands and feet were cut off.
And then, while still alive, they were thrown out in the hot desert to die.
They asked for water, and nobody provided them with water till they died.
Sahih al-Bukhari 6419 ‫صحيح البخارى‬
‫فأتى النبي صلى ال عليه وسلم الصريخ فبعث الطلب في آثارهم فما ترجل النهار حتى أتي بهم فأمر بمسامير‬
‫فأحميت فكحلهم وقطع أيديهم وأرجلهم وما حسمهم ثم ألقوا في الحرة يستسقون فما سقوا حتى ماتوا‬

When the Prophet was informed by a shouter for help, he sent some men in their
pursuit, and before the sun rose high, they were brought, and he had their hands
and feet cut off. Then he ordered for nails which were heated and passed over their

water, and nobody provided them with water till they died.

The Qur’an also prescribes similar forms of punishments:

‫خلف أو ينفوا من الر ف ِ ذلك لهم خزي في الدنيا ولهم في الخرة عذاب عظيم‬

The punishment of those who wage war against Allah and His Messenger, and strive
with might and main for mischief through the land is: execution, or crucifixion, or
the cutting off of hands and feet from opposite sides, or exile from the land: that is
their disgrace in this world, and a heavy punishment is theirs in the Hereafter;

Remember thy Lord inspired the angels (with the message): I am with you: give
firmness to the Believers: I will instil terror into the hearts of the Unbelievers: smite
ye above their necks and smite all their finger-tips off them.

‫وأقاموا الصلة وآتوا الزكاة فخلوا سبيلهم إن ال غفور رحيم‬
But when the forbidden months are past, then fight and slay the Pagans wherever ye
find them, an seize them, beleaguer them, and lie in wait for them in every
stratagem (of war); but if they repent, and establish regular prayers and practise
regular charity, then open the way for them: for Allah is Oft-forgiving, Most
Merciful.

And (as for) the man who steals and the woman who steals, cut off their hands as a
punishment for what they have earned, an exemplary punishment from Allah; and
Allah is Mighty, Wise.

Muhammad used torture to achieve his goals just like any ordinary king and
dictator throughout human history.

‫وما أرسلناك إل رحمة للعالمين‬
We sent thee not, but as a Mercy for all creatures.
