A first career in the software industry made be aware of the social impacts of IT use, both on individuals and on organisations. As Senior Lecturer in Communication Studies at Sheffield Hallam (1996-2012), I used that knowledge in my teaching, by encouraging the development of online learning communities and focusing the curriculum on the social aspects of business and technical communication. As staff developer since September 2012, my role is to support lecturers' use of learning technologies, taking into account disciplinary considerations and students’ learning and employability aspirations.
