Horror Theory
1. Some people believe that
Shakespeare can be seen as
having an input on media
theory about the horror
genre as he is believed to
have put forth the notion of
bad things happening in bad
weather which can be seen
to be quite true in a great
deal of horror films such as
Friday the 13th and The
Shining and therefore when
looking at what time of day
to set my product I chose late afternoon as to capture the gloomy setting and
dark cold atmosphere which can be seen in the outdoor scenes in the
previous two mentioned films.
Kaminsky - states that in horror films you are more likely to see a killer
using a knife, axe, physical weapon which he sees as a personal extension of
our arms and therefore in horror films the deaths seem to be more personal
and intimate that using a
firearm which is very true
when you look throughout
the entire horror genre there
are far more franchises based
on killers that use personal
killing methods rather than
using guns and bombs
allowing for a quick and
easy death. three great
examples would be, Friday
the 13th, Halloween and The
Texas Chainsaw Massacre, there was not enough time to implement this into
my production however if there was a scene in which someone were to die,
the method would certainly be that of a more personal method such as a
knife or close quarters weapon due to feeling that Kaminsky's idea is
completely correct.
Wes Craven - He states
that murders are far more
disturbing and terrifying
when occurring in a safe
2. place - for example a camp or even in your own home and you can see
where he gets this idea because his most famous franchise of horror acts
upon this beyond any other horror movie where the killer kills the characters
in their own minds and dreams. Also it can be seen in another franchise that
is equally as iconic if not more so which is that of Friday the 13th, which the
murders for the most part take, place in a summer camp for children.
However I challenged this theory due to only having 2 minutes for my
project and I believed that setting it in an abandoned building in the middle
of nowhere would be more unnerving than that simply of a house as 2
minutes leaves me little room to do much with the setting.
Carol Clover states that killers in horror
tend to have either issues with their
childhood or are sexually disturbed.
female killers tend to have gender
confusion (mother in friday the 13th).
sadism - enjoy inflicting pain on others.
masochism - enjoy having pain inflicted on
themselves.
walls that seem safe at first soon become a
prison keeping you trapped with the killer.
Obviously the top two are very present in one of the films that I looked in to
being Friday the 13th where it was used to great effect to create an amazing
narrative which allowed each and every one of the films to be instant
classics and I looked into adding these elements into my film however again
there simply was no time to create a back story about childhood trauma and
even if I could it would be about a antagonist that the audience had no
knowledge of, my killer is male so it makes the second point pointless, the
third and fourth would be hard to create without breaking certain rules,
however the last idea put forth is to a lesser extent placed in the product
because you get a sense that in that house with the killer you get the feeling
that it is far less safe in there that outdoors and it creates a certain cage type
feel that Katrina is trapped with the killer.
