There is significant value in using Social Media and Mobile Apps in social, political and economic spheres of activity. Within these areas, social media tools such as Blogs, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Facebook share a common usage in supporting internal communication, collaboration, news aggregation, teaching, learning and knowledge sharing. Are there similar benefits for using social media within the spheres of Leadership and Management in Libraries? How are 21st century Library leaders utilising social media to enhance services in their organisations and connect and communicate with stakeholders? What are the opportunities and challenges associated with using social media in Libraries? This presentation seeks to address these issues. It highlights some of the core competencies (professional and personal) that is required for library leaders to function effectively in a technologically driven environment and introduces emerging trends and concepts - cloud storage, crowdfunding, makerspaces, MOOCs, news aggregation, photo and video sharing, self-publishing, social networking, video conferencing, visualization - that can be readily adopted and adapted (‘mashed up’) in libraries and other knowledge repositories. The goal is to develop and share a toolkit of resources for 21st century library leaders who are willing to use Social Media and Mobile Apps to engage their communities, reshape and add value to the effective delivery of innovative library services.

According to the Canadian Federation of Library Associations (CFLA-FCAB)’s position statement, “libraries have a responsibility to contribute to a culture that recognizes diversity and fosters social inclusion.” Yet the numbers tell a different story, and a recent research study that examined racial and ethnic diversity among Canadian academic librarians in a nationwide survey found a lack of ethnic diversity among the profession. Similarly, when American Library Association (ALA) released "Diversity Counts," the comprehensive study revealed a lack of diversity in librarianship that failed to reflect the demographic shifts across the United States. In 2012, a landmark study captured for the first time demographics of visible minority librarians in Canada, and found an overwhelming need from respondents for a forum to share ideas, a mentorship program, and networking opportunities. Drawing on their research and experiences, this session's panelists share experiences, insights, and concerns relating to the representation, identity, bias, educational barriers, and other issues they have observed and encountered within the library landscape and society at large. How can Canadian librarians support their racially and ethnically diverse librarian colleagues? What are the issues and challenges faced by Canadian libraries with respect to the recruitment and retention of a racially and ethnically diverse workforce? And how can libraries advocate for and promote racial and ethnic diversity in the library profession beyond the confines of their own libraries?

Ricepaper magazine is a Canadian magazine which has showcased Asian Canadian literature, culture, and the arts since 1994. Ricepaper first began in 1994 as a newsletter for the Asian Canadian Writers’ Workshop (ACWW) – eight pages which were photocopied back-to-back and stapled together. Ricepaper was a way for ACWW members to communicate amongst each other as well as celebrate each other’s successes. ACWW, a non-profit organization, continues to publish Ricepaper today. From these humble beginnings, Ricepaper became a quarterly magazine that was distributed coast-to-coast, publishing the new voices coming out of the Asian Canadian arts and literary community. Ricepaper continues to be the longest running Canadian literary magazine of its kind with an Asian Canadian perspective.

In BC’s nearly-decade-old “new” curriculum, the curricular competencies describe the processes that students are expected to develop in areas of learning such as mathematics. They reflect the “Do” in the “Know-Do-Understand” model. Under the “Communicating” header falls the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions.” Note that it contains two processes: “Explain mathematical ideas” and “Justify mathematical decisions.” I have broken it down into its separate parts in order to understand--or reveal--its meaning. The first part is commonplace in classrooms. By now, BC math teachers—and students—understand that “Explain mathematical ideas” means more than “Show your work.” Teachers consistently ask “What did you do?” and “How do you know?” This process is about retelling, not just of steps but of thinking. The second part happens less frequently. Think back to the last time that you observed a student make—a necessary precursor to justify—a mathematical decision. “Justify” is about defending. Like “explain,” it involves reasoning; unlike “explain,” it also involves opinion and debate. In order to reinterpret the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions,” I will continue to take apart its constituent part “Justify mathematical decisions” and carefully examine the term “mathematical decisions.” What, exactly, is a “mathematical decision”? Below, I will categorize answers to this question. These categories, and the provided examples, may help to suggest new opportunities for students to justify.
