Five decades ago, depression was considered to be relatively uncommon. Now, we are told that depression affects up to 1 in 5 people. But what exactly is this thing we now refer to as "depression"? In this presentation, Dr. Terry Lynch sets out why he has created a comprehensive online course on the nature of depression for mental health practitioners. Bottom line; the current prevailing view of depression is seriously flawed. A far more psychologically-oriented approach is required. In this presentation, Terry Lynch provides a glimpse of the comprehensive understanding of depression that is presented in detail in his online course.

Managing anxiety By Ms. Jai Bapat. Sheetal participates in school Debate competition. She prepares her speech thoroughly. On the day of debate she can’t recollect anything about her speech. She gets scared when she has to go on stage. Reema is studying very hard for her annual exams. Soham a college going teenager likes a girl in his college. But whenever he meets her he is unable to express his feelings to her. Thinking the fact that what will be her reply. He is anxious and never expresses his feelings to her. What is common in above all the three situations? That they are scared and not able to finish their task. We can label this feeling as Anxiety So what is Anxiety? Anxiety is often described as a feeling of worry, fear. It’s much more than just a feeling. Traumatic events that can trigger Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder include violent physical injury, natural or man-made disasters, accidents, or military fighting.. People with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder have intense and troubling thoughts and feelings related to their experience that linger long after the traumatic event ends. You can relive the event through flashbacks or nightmares; You can be sad, scared, or angry and they can feel distant or aloof from other people. People with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder can avoid situations or people reminding them of the traumatic event, and they can have strong negative reactions to something as common as a loud noise or accidental touch.

Even though depression is so common, there are many misconceptions about its symptoms, causes and treatment. The problem is that misinformation gives rise to stigma and isolation. Individuals with clinical depression often feel alone because others expect them to simply snap out of it or stop being lazy. These kinds of myths can make people not want to seek treatment. Untreated depression also can have devastating consequences like health complications, drug or alcohol abuse and suicide. Here’s a selection of myths n facts you might not know about.

Anxiety is a common mental health condition that affects people of all genders, including women. In this response, I will provide you with some information about anxiety in women, including its prevalence, symptoms, causes, and available treatment options. It's important to note that while this information is generally applicable, each individual's experience with anxiety may vary. Prevalence: Anxiety disorders are more prevalent in women compared to men. According to research, women are approximately twice as likely as men to be diagnosed with anxiety disorders. This higher prevalence may be influenced by a combination of biological, hormonal, and sociocultural factors. Symptoms: Anxiety can manifest in various ways, and individuals may experience a range of symptoms. Common symptoms of anxiety include: Excessive worrying or fear Restlessness or feeling on edge Irritability Difficulty concentrating or focusing Sleep disturbances, such as trouble falling asleep or staying asleep Muscle tension or aches Fatigue or feeling tired easily Panic attacks, which involve sudden and intense periods of fear or discomfort Causes and Risk Factors: The causes of anxiety in women are multifaceted and can involve a combination of genetic, environmental, and psychological factors. Some common risk factors for developing anxiety include: Family history of anxiety or other mental health disorders Personal history of trauma or stressful life events Chronic medical conditions Hormonal changes, such as those occurring during menstrual cycles, pregnancy, or menopause Sociocultural factors, such as gender roles, societal expectations, or experiences of discrimination or inequality Treatment Options: Fortunately, anxiety disorders are treatable, and various treatment options are available. These may include: Psychotherapy: Therapy, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), can help individuals identify and modify negative thought patterns and behaviors associated with anxiety. Medication: Antidepressants, such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), may be prescribed by a healthcare professional to help manage anxiety symptoms. Lifestyle modifications: Engaging in regular exercise, practicing stress-management techniques (e.g., meditation, deep breathing exercises), maintaining a healthy diet, and getting enough sleep can support overall mental well-being. Support network: Building a strong support system and reaching out to friends, family, or support groups can provide emotional support and help alleviate feelings of isolation. Self-Care and Coping Strategies: In addition to formal treatment, self-care strategies can be beneficial in managing anxiety. These may include: Prioritizing self-care activities, such as engaging in hobbies, practicing mindfulness, or engaging in activities that bring joy and relaxation. Maintaining a balanced lifestyle with healthy habits, including regular exercise, a balanced diet, and adequate sleep.

In BC’s nearly-decade-old “new” curriculum, the curricular competencies describe the processes that students are expected to develop in areas of learning such as mathematics. They reflect the “Do” in the “Know-Do-Understand” model. Under the “Communicating” header falls the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions.” Note that it contains two processes: “Explain mathematical ideas” and “Justify mathematical decisions.” I have broken it down into its separate parts in order to understand--or reveal--its meaning. The first part is commonplace in classrooms. By now, BC math teachers—and students—understand that “Explain mathematical ideas” means more than “Show your work.” Teachers consistently ask “What did you do?” and “How do you know?” This process is about retelling, not just of steps but of thinking. The second part happens less frequently. Think back to the last time that you observed a student make—a necessary precursor to justify—a mathematical decision. “Justify” is about defending. Like “explain,” it involves reasoning; unlike “explain,” it also involves opinion and debate. In order to reinterpret the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions,” I will continue to take apart its constituent part “Justify mathematical decisions” and carefully examine the term “mathematical decisions.” What, exactly, is a “mathematical decision”? Below, I will categorize answers to this question. These categories, and the provided examples, may help to suggest new opportunities for students to justify.
