Module 3 Overview Egoism and Relativism; Pluralism and Pragmatism Welcome to Module Three. Is it wrong to smoke marijuana? Is it unethical to get an abortion? Recently, several states and municipalities have passed ordinances and ballot initiatives legalizing the use of marijuana. Also, some states have severely restricted access to abortion, whereas others have not. Are these actions right or wrong and ethical or unethical depending on physical boundaries or jurisdiction rule? This module will explore egoism, moral relativism, pluralism, and pragmatism in the context of real-world issues. Learning Objectives Upon completion of this module, you should be able to: 2B discuss ‘moral sainthood’ and its role in ethics. 6B describe pluralism and pragmatism as they relate to ethics. 6C analyze the benefits and criticisms of cultural relativism as it relates to ethics. 7A evaluate the different perspectives of egoism as it relates to ethics. 7B discuss sociological and cultural relativism as they relate to ethics. Module 3 Reading Assignment Waller, B. N. (2011). Consider ethics: Theory, readings, and contemporary issues (3rd ed.). Upper Saddle River, New Jersey: Pearson. Chapters 2 and 6. Supplemental Reading Assignments (Required): Häyry, M. (2005). A defense of ethical relativism. Cambridge Quarterly of Healthcare Ethics, 14(1), 7-12. Egoism and Relativism; Pluralism and Pragmatism Chapter 2 Lecture Notes: Egoism and Relativism Egoism Psychological egoism is the view that all of our behavior is selfish or self-interested as a matter of empirical psychological fact. Although several convincing examples can be given in support of selfish or self-interested behavior, psychological egoism, as a scientific theory, fails the test of falsifiability. If psychological egoism is a scientific account of human behavior, then one should able to state what would count as evidence against the position. But all acts that might count against the theory are immediately reinterpreted in terms of selfishness or self-interest. Thus, psychological egoists tend to espouse a belief and not an empirically testable claim. Additionally, the psychological egoist appears to conflate the notions of selfishness, self-interest, and satisfaction. Ethical egoism is the view that we ought to always act in a way that is self-interested. Unlike psychological egoism, ...

1 Pluralism & Pragmatism Values in Ethics Pluralism & Pragmatism Philosophers have sought to answer what is the summum bonum (ultimate good)? Pluralism & Pragmatism Plato argued that justice is the highest good. Aristotle insisted that the life of intellectual virtue is the highest good. Pluralism & Pragmatism Kant insisted that the overriding ethical principle is to follow the categorical imperative. Bentham posited that the highest good was to seek the highest amount of pleasure over pain. Pluralism & Pragmatism Their difference withstanding, they all agree on the same basic assumption: there is one unified overall fundamental good, and that good should organize and direct all our ethical considerations. Pluralism & Pragmatism For this to be so, there must be a truth to ethics, and that means ultimately that there must be a unified whole. Pluralism & Pragmatism For example: In science, if biology holds a theory that is in conflict with geology and both are in conflict with chemistry, then something is wrong. The same idea appeals to ethicists: if there is an ethical truth it must be unified. Pluralism & Pragmatism 2 Dissenters to this idea are Value Pluralists. Value pluralism (pluralism, moral pluralism) is the view that values do not have to exist in a unified order. Pluralism & Pragmatism There are multiple values and all of them are legitimate genuine values that may sometimes be in conflict, and there is no objective way of placing those values in ranking order. Pluralism & Pragmatism Those who favor a unified theory may believe that there are many different values, but they all share the same defining property (eg: approved by God, increase happiness, diminish suffering, contribute to wisdom, etc.) Pluralism & Pragmatism Whereas pluralists insist that there is no property that these diverse values have in common, no unifying characteristic. Pluralism & Pragmatism Value Pluralism differs from Political Pluralism, in that, a political pluralist believes that citizens of the state should be free to pursue their own values as long as they don’t harm or interfere with others citizens, but at the same time s/he may believe that her or his values are “true” and others are false. Value pluralists believe that there is no one “truth,” or supreme good, but many goods with no clear order among them. Pluralism & Pragmatism Judith Jarvis Thompson argues that there is an irreducible plurality of goods. 3 E.g.: Deborah is a good mother, a good friend, a good soldier, and a good judge; but it is difficult to imagine a “quality of goodness” that makes Deborah good in all of these distinctive roles. Pluralism & Pragmatism Friendship is a good, along with courage, open- mindedness and integrity, but is there a good making quality among them all? Are not these goods at times in conflict ...

Ethical Relativism is a meta-ethical theory, which maintains that our moral judgments are essentially relative. Ethical relativism appears in two main versions, namely, Moral Subjectivism and Cultural Relativism. Moral Subjectivism asserts that moral judgments reflect the feelings or dispositions of an individual at a given time. Thus, one’s moral judgments and values are subjectively determined. Jean-Jacques Rousseau defended ethical subjectivism by arguing that nature is superior to society. According to Rousseau, an individual should follow his/hers natural inclinations and propensities, i.e., natural virtues. However, Moral Subjectivism has some very uncomfortable consequences: 1. If Moral Subjectivism is correct, then two individuals may have different moral judgments on the same situation and both of them may be right. Thus, Subjectivism fails to explain what is right and wrong. 2. If Moral Subjectivism is correct, then a person cannot be wrong in their moral judgments. If my moral judgments reflect just my feelings and dispositions, then I cannot be mistaken in my moral judgments. After all, I am best familiar with my feelings. Yet, I can think of a few cases in which I have been wrong in my judgments because of my feelings and emotions. Thus, Subjectivism leads us to inconsistent judgments. 3. Moral Subjectivism prevents us from having a rational discussion on ethical issues. When people are led by their feelings there is very little communication on ethical issues. 4. Moral Subjectivism is an inconsistent ethical theory. One cannot live one’s life as a moral subjectivist. Our interactions with other people are inevitable and require some common understanding of what is right and what is wrong. The above difficulties ruin the appeal of Moral Subjectivism as a meta-ethical theory. There is a fundamental reason for the failure of Moral Subjectivism. Moral Subjectivism ignores the fact that our lives are closely connected and our actions inevitably affect other people. Ethics is the system of rules that hold our community together. Thus, ethics is by its very nature inter-subjective. ...

And it indicates that the discount is applied to every item in the order, regardless of how much each item costs separately. This slide will show how to manage global discounts in odoo 17 POS.
