2. Bonding
§ Another popular choice that A-list celebs turn to is bonding.
Notables that have gotten bonding include hip-hop legend Nas.
Dental bonding is used to address a variety of cosmetic and
restorative dental issues.
§ Whether your teeth are chipped, cracked, discolored or decayed or
you are concerned about small gaps between teeth or receding
gums, dental bonding can provide a long-lasting solution to many
of your dental problems. Dental bonding is typically the quickest,
easiest and least expensive way to repair minor cosmetic
imperfections in your smile.
3. Bonding
§ How does the procedure work?
§ First, a mild acid is placed on the tooth to “open the pores” of the outer
and inner tooth structure. Next, the dentist will place a liquid adhesive in
the tooth that acts as a “glue” to hold the filling material inside the pores
of the tooth. Your dentist will have the bonding material in his or her
office and will select the color material that matches your tooth the best.
The material comes in a variety of shades of white, yellow, grays, browns
and translucents so that your dentist can create natural looking tooth.
§ Once the putty filling material is placed on the tooth, it is molded and
shaped to achieve the desired result (i.e. repair the chip, close the space,
lengthen the tooth, mask the localized discoloration, etc.). The filling is
then secured and locked with an UV light, smoothed and polished to feel
as normal as your original tooth felt.
4. Bonding
What are the pros and cons?
§
Every dental procedure comes with a list of pros and cons. Here are my thoughts
concerning the pros and cons of dental bonding:
§
§
Pros: Bonding is a conservative option to doing porcelain veneers. Unlike porcelain
veneers, bonding is a procedure that does not always require extensive drilling and
therefore the dentist can keep more of your healthy teeth structure. The fee for bonding
is considerably less than porcelain veneers. Because your dentist has the bonding
materials in-house, the procedure can be done in just one short visit.
Cons: The results of dental bonding are dependant on how skilled your cosmetic dentist
is. If your dentist is not highly artistic and doesn’t have an eye for color, the results of
your bonding may not look as natural and life-like as your natural tooth or porcelain
veneers. The bonding material does not hold the luster of porcelain veneers and will,
over time, begin to stain and discolor. As a result, the bonding may need to be replaced
much sooner than desired. Although bonding materials are strong, they are not as
strong as porcelain and may chip more easily.
5. Bonding
How much will it cost?
§ You can expect to spend between $250 and $500, per tooth, for dental
bonding.
Will insurance cover this procedure?
§ Dental bondings placed on the front teeth are generally partially covered by
dental insurance. The rules for each insurance plan may differ depending on
the benefits package that you choose. If your plan offers benefits for services
such as plastic composite resin fillings, then they may cover your bondings. If
you want to be certain of the benefits offered by your plan before starting
your work, your dentist may be willing to submit a letter with x-rays to your
insurance to get a pre- authorization of the procedure with fees that they will
pay as well as fees that will be covered by you.
6. Bonding
How long will it last?
§ The average life span of bondings are 3-5 years but can last up to a
decade with proper care.
