This presentation was delivered to the student leaders of Bergen Community College in October of 2009. It was designed in their conference theme, to inspire the students to realize that they each had a special skill to share with the world... it was their task to figure out what it was.
Introduce yourself, thank them for the opportunity… ask them how they are feeling! Ask them why they are here? I’m here to make them THINK.
In order to discover your superpowers today, this weekend, and throughout your collegiate career…. There are three questions I have for you today:
When I ask you this question, what are the first things you think about? Stand up if this is you: - A Nice Person, - A Family Person, - A Passionate Person, - A Loyal Friend
Would your friends describe you in the same way you described yourself? What in your life could back up what you are talking about?
What is their appeal? What did they all go through?
Have you ever thought of this question? What were your answers?
Persuasion = Persuasion
Multiplicity = Multitasking
Super Speed = Efficiency
Rapid Learning = Rapid Learning
Retroknowledge = Reading Comments
Thought Transfer = Sharing Knowledge
Knowledge is NOT POWER… it is only POTENTIAL POWER…. It is what you do with it that matters.
Do you remember what it was like to be a kid? What did you do then that you don’t do now? Why? What has gotten in the way?
Realize That Doing the Unrealistic is Easier Than Doing the Realistic! This is easier than it seems, and all it takes is believing you can do it. Have you ever heard of the term, “lonely at the top?” Why? 99% of the world are convinced that they are incapable of achieving great things, so what do they do? They all aim to be the best “mediocre” they can be. The levels of competition are FIERCE for what is considered, “Realistic”, pardoxically making them the most energy and time-consuming. Ex: It’s easier to raise $10,000,000.00 than it is $1,000,000; It’s easier to pick up the one “perfect 10” in a bar, than it is to pick up five different “8’s”. Do NOT overestimate the competition and underestimate yourself. You are better than you think you are!
You are more powerful than you imagine. Do not overestimate your competition and underestimate yourself.
What are their common secrets to success? They have failed, persevered, made mistakes, and never quit. They realize that the only way to get better is to fail. The only way to fail is to ACT. Inaction/Fear holds you back more than you know.
