2. 1) Analyse the purpose
of the extract:The purpose of the scene was to show the audience that Samuel has
witnessed the crime scene. It also shows as how Samuels life turns
from a simple Amish boy to dealing with the complicated technical
world he's not use to. The director was aiming to show that the police
is corrupt and had a bad side as Sam witness it too. The director also
want to show how Samuels world and John Books world come
together through the crime. He does this by showing a bit of both
Samuels and johns world before the crime, then shows the scene
where Sam witness's the crime. The use the technique with close ups
on Samuels eyes through the hole of the door to show that he really
did see everything. I personally haven’t witnessed a crime but I’m New
York, there is an average 400-600 murders a year.
3. 2) Analyse the use of
lighting in this extract:In the scene where sam witnesses the crime, the lightning goes down, it
drops to more of a low lightning, this is made to look like and create the
effect of bathroom lightning, but a bit dark as the crime is dark. This
creates a darker effect and mood. its more sinister and scary feeling.
You learn that same life changes as he witness that scene. his and john
books life and came together. The theme is a dark and scary theme as
Sam, Who is a young boy, witnesses something that bad at a young age
and as well as a brutal murder is been taking place. The audience is
affect booths scene. They are shocked and horrified that a young boy
has to witness that. they feel sorrow and worry as they don’t know if sam
is going be be killer next either to not.
4. 3) Analyse the music in
the extract.
There wasn't much music used in this scene. There was a lot
of sound affects and not much dialogue too. The sound of
people getting punched and hurt was easy to spot. This
teaches us that this scene is violent and disturbing. The music
in this extract shows us that the criminal is a violent person as
the music effect gives an affect of louder, harder punches. The
overall theme is very serious and scary as well as violent. This
is because punches are being thrown and Samuels life is at
risk. This scene teaches us that good people can be bad too,
and it teaches us how Johns and Samuels life comes together.
This inks to society as these days truth worthy people such as
the police, the community and other people can be corrupt and
have a different mind set then how society sees it.
5. 4) Analyse the mise-en-
scene in the extractSamuels is one of the costumes in this scene. He wears the
traditional amish outfit; black long coat, hat, black pants and polished
shoes and white shirt underneath with a tie. When Samuel is in the
bathroom witnessing the fight, the camera switches between Samuel
and the three men. In this you see the different cultures as the other
older men wear the more casual; black pants and tucked in shirt and
tie. two different costumes showed the two different cultures. The
director highlights Samuels as an outsider through the use of his
costume. The acting was very violent and not much dialogue as its
focused on the corrupt cops. the director was focused on Samuel
witnessing the scene as they flick between the fight and and Samuel
looking through and toilet gap in the door.
6. 5) Analyse the use of at least
two shots and camera
movement in the extractShot one: Samuels looking through
the door witnessing the crime scene.
The director used this shot to show
that Samuel was in danger and
peeking through the gap of the door to
see the crime scene. The camera had
a close up on Samuels eye through
the gap of the door. The main reason
why the director used this technique
was to show samuel is watching the
crime through the door secretly. The
theme has changed from a normal
scene to an action and crime theme
scene.
7. 5) Analyse the use of at least
two shots and camera
movement in the extractShot two: Shocked Samuel.
The director used this scene because
he/she wanted to show that same is
scared about the crime scene. After the
crime scene the muderers looked
through the toilet stalls to see if anyone
was there and the director wanted to
show that samuel was scared that he
was going to be found and killed. this
was a close up on samuels face
because the director chose to show the
audience the worry and how sam was
anxious. this scene developed because
it made the scene more intense and
sinister.
8. Analyse at least two pieces
of dialogue in this extract
Murder person 1: What are you doing?
Murder person 2: Im checking it again
This is after when the two corrupt police officers murder another
man. There wasn't very much dialogue in this scene so it was hard
choosing. In this dialogue is hows that after the murder the two
corrupt police officers are looking through the toilet stalls. In the
scene we see the Samuel is stuck there. When one of the police
officers says “im checking again” is when the audience knows that
Samuel might get caught and killed to. This adds suspension as
they go through every stall and Samuels is the last stall. From this,
is shows that the main corrupt police officer isn't hesitating to kill
someone again as he pulls his gun out before looking through the
stalls. The audience learns how corrupt and untruth worth and
rebellious the cops are.
