2. Loyalists
• Americans who did not support the revolution.
• 1 in 5 were strongly in favour of British rule.
• Patriots like the Sons of Freedom abused, bullied,
and even burned down the homes and farms of the
loyalists.
• When the rev. ended, many loyalists felt forced to
leave their homes to go to British colonies.
• 43,000 to Quebec & 8,000 to Maritimes.
• 60,000 Canadiens already in Quebec.

3. • All the loyalists made the Canadiens
uncomfortable.
• The loyalists resented the French and did not
want to adjust to French traditions.
• In the West, they demanded their own gov’t.
• The Constitutional Act of 1791 split Quebec
into Upper and Lower Canada.

5. Joseph Brant
• The Mohawk nation had strong links to the British.
• Americans wanted their land.
• Joseph Brant made several trips to England as an
Ambassador for the Six Nations to gain lands for
them to settle.
• Were eventually given land along the Grand River
in southern Ontario near where Brantford is today
(north of Lake Eerie).

6. The Constitutional Act
• Passed in 1791, divided Quebec into 2 new
colonies – Upper & Lower Canada
• LC kept French culture, Catholic religion, and
French civil law.
• UC was English-speaking and Protestant, with
British laws.

• By 1815 there were 95,000 people in Upper
Canada.
• People came for the cheap land, especially
from the United States.
