Robert Baden-Powell founded the scouting movement after holding an experimental camp on Brownsea Island in 1907. Scouting aims to help young people develop physically, intellectually, socially, emotionally and spiritually through activities, a progressive program, and teamwork according to the Scout Law and Promise. Scouting is divided into branches for different age groups including Wolf Cubs, Scouts, and Senior Scouts. Scouts greet each other with the left handshake as a sign of trust.

Introduction
Robert Stephenson Smyth Baden-Powell was
born in Paddington, London on February 22nd
1857. Served in the British Army from 1876 until
1910 in India and Africa.
Baden-Powell was a hero to many because of his
military experiences and his founding of the Boy
Scouts organization.
In 1907 he held an experimental scout camp on
Brownsea Island, Poole, Dorset, to try out his
ideas. He brought together 22 boys, and put them
into camp under his leadership. The whole world
now knows the results of that camp (Baden-Powell
of Gilwell, Chief Scout of the World).
Baden-Powell wrote many books. His first was
“Scouting for Boys”; it was published in 1908.
Baden-Powell lived his last years in Nyeri, Kenya,
where he died and was buried in 1941.
