- In the late 1500s, early microscopes were developed that allowed the observation of cell structures. In 1665, Robert Hooke discovered cells by examining cork and coined the term "cell". - In the early 1800s, scientists proposed the Cell Theory - that all living things are made of cells. In 1855, it was discovered that cells only arise from pre-existing cells. - Microscopes use different types of radiation (light, electrons) to view cells. Light microscopes use visible light while electron microscopes provide much higher resolution using electron beams.
