Multiple Types of Journals Used to Enhance the Whole-Class Inquiry Setting

What is Inquiry?


What is inquiry? Most think of a class spinning out of control with no destination...


I like to think of it as premeditated chaos...

What is
Whole-Class Inquiry?


Having the entire class investigate a challenge together; developing a self-suficient scientiﬁc
community of learners.

Important for you to get a sense of my room in order to see how the description of a journal
enhances this strategy/goal/etc.


Went from this....(movie from September..)


...to this. (movie from February) All classes dierent. All students dierent. But they all have
value. And we meet up again a year later. It’s not a superﬁcial, temporary connection for
many of them...


As we talk today, understand this is my focus...
So where do we begin in order to develop this?
At the end...
How do we? There is NO ONE TOOL that will create this environment. LAYERS are needed.
This is my ultimate goal is to form a self-suficient scientiﬁc community of learners.

supposed to keep our lab journals. It’s just like
the way you had us do it. I feel so proud that I
already know how to keep a really good lab

mine as the model for teaching the class how
to keep good records! So thanks!”

I feel conﬁdent...Think I’m already doing what is in the best interest of students...but always
want to reﬂect and improve...


Times have changed!
When we reﬂect on our practice, we might not see what we expect to see.


I looked at the work that Dennis did and focused on the frustrations students were
having...happy to hear that some of the frustrations I intended for them to feel existed.
Worked on ﬁxing those I did not want them to have...
