Multiple Types of Journals Used to Enhance the Whole-Class Inquiry Setting
Who are we?

Reflect on our practice...What we do and why we do it?
Compare NSTA experiences—Big ideas v. Ready-to-use activities...
This talk falls somewhere in between.

                  Whole-Class Inquiry?

Having the entire class investigate a challenge together; developing a self-suficient scientific
community of learners.
Love this picture...I’m not in it!
Important for you to get a sense of my room in order to see how the description of a journal
enhances this strategy/goal/etc.

...to this. (movie from February) All classes dierent. All students dierent. But they all have
value. And we meet up again a year later. It’s not a superficial, temporary connection for
many of them...

As we talk today, understand this is my focus...
So where do we begin in order to develop this?
At the end...
How do we? There is NO ONE TOOL that will create this environment. LAYERS are needed.
This is my ultimate goal is to form a self-suficient scientific community of learners.

I will collect...Then, will comment on organization and/or thoroughness of journal. Give hints.
If I want to check for accuracy...
Collect and write a note back for journal reflections.

How are these similar to scientists’ journals?

-initials w/ taped material
“We've just started doing work for my
engineering class. The first lab we're doing is
on human efficiency which should be fun. But
what I wanted to tell you is how we're
supposed to keep our lab journals. It’s just like
the way you had us do it. I feel so proud that I
already know how to keep a really good lab
journal. My professor commented on using
mine as the model for teaching the class how
to keep good records! So thanks!”

“I’m surrounded by multi-million dollar
equipment, but the most important tool a
scientist uses each day is his journal. Having an
understanding of how to do that should be the
foundation of any lab-based science course.
‘Cause at the end of the day, the multi-million
dollar equipment means nothing without the
                                    journal.
                      ~Patrick Murphy, University of Iowa

How does this help us promote WCI?
1. Collaboration on content; using journal as tool for learning...
2. Interested in the experience in science, not the science facts
3. Connection w/ teacher; trust we have their best interest at heart.
4. VALUE in the community

How does this help us promote WCI?
Puts the idea of safety in a community perspective. “We’re all in this together!”

I looked at the work that Dennis did and focused on the frustrations students were
having...happy to hear that some of the frustrations I intended for them to feel existed.
Worked on fixing those I did not want them to have...

  • 41. “We've just started doing work for my engineering class. The first lab we're doing is on human efficiency which should be fun. But what I wanted to tell you is how we're supposed to keep our lab journals. It’s just like the way you had us do it. I feel so proud that I already know how to keep a really good lab journal. My professor commented on using mine as the model for teaching the class how to keep good records! So thanks!” ~Aaron N., Johns Hopkins University Wednesday, March 25, 2009 23
  • 42. “I’m surrounded by multi-million dollar equipment, but the most important tool a scientist uses each day is his journal. Having an understanding of how to do that should be the foundation of any lab-based science course. ‘Cause at the end of the day, the multi-million dollar equipment means nothing without the journal. ~Patrick Murphy, University of Iowa Wednesday, March 25, 2009 24
  • 43. ? Wednesday, March 25, 2009 25 How does this help us promote WCI? 1. Collaboration on content; using journal as tool for learning... 2.
