2. Lakeland college history
Vermillion
Lakeland college was first put in motion in 1908 by the Vermilion Board of Trade who lobbied the
government of Alberta for a demonstration farm and/or agricultural college. In 1911 the government
of Alberta purchased land near seven Alberta communities, which also included just west of the town
of Vermilion. in 1913 November 17,The Vermilion farm became the Vermilion School of Agriculture
(VSA) and was one of the first out of three agricultural colleges to be opened during that year. The
two other schools opened that year were in Olds and Claresholm.
The first class at vermillion was an all make class if 34 students, and in march home economics
courses where offered which attracted more female students to the vermillion campus.
In the 1960 the college changed its name again to simply Vermilion College., and when both the
Alberta and Saskatchewan governments begin promoting regional facilities, Vermilion College became
Lakeland College in 1975.
Lakeland college is established as Canada's first, and to date only, interprovincial college with regional
campuses in eastern Alberta and western Saskatchewan. Today only the Vermilion and Lloydminster
campuses remain open, and the Lakeland College Emergency Training Centre is located adjacent to
the Vermilion campus. And was opened in 1959 as the Fire Officers Training School.
3. Lakeland college history
Lloydminster
• The Lloydminster campus was opened in 1990, Previously the college used other buildings in different
locations around the city for training. The initial campus building also included a residence village that
housed workers building the Husky Heavy Oil Upgrader before it became a home away from home for
college students.
• The college has also recently renovated and expanded its facility in sept. 2008 with the addition of the
Bill Kondro wing that features a student lounge equipped with plasma TVs, a state-of-the-art
computer lab and a high-tech demonstration site for the nursing school.

Lakeland college also provides the option to continue learning by offering a bachelors degree in
business If you graduated from a Lakeland College business diploma program with a 1.7 GPA or better.
you may apply to Athabasca University's Post-Diploma Bachelor of Commerce or Bachelor of
Management degree.
5. Why Lakeland???

Lakeland offers many programs and courses that caiter to many different lifestyles, personal
interests, and life goals, there is something at Lakeland for everybody.
Everybody chooses Lakeland for different reasons, the reasons why we chose Lakeland is
• Lakeland is situated not only in a booming city but also in a rural town that is close to
many students home towns which means that you are never very far from home.
• Lakeland offers on/near campus cafeterias, housing, recreation centers, and college
sports and weekly activities that all students are welcome to participate in and enjoy.
6. Recreation
Lakeland college offers many different recreation options such as
sports, access to the lloydminister pool, and budmiller park, and
access to the commonwealth center at the studenst pleasure. The
lloydminister campus also offers an oncampus bar and is located
adjacent to budmiller with the lake within walking and veiwing
distance of the campus housing. Lakeland college also has many
different sports teams such as volleyball, basketball, curling etc.
7. Student housing
Lakeland college offers on campus student housing and also off campus student housing at both vermillion
and Lloydminster.
• At the Lloydminster campus they have two types of buildings which are, pinwheels for single students
and townhouses for families. pinwheel suite’s include 8 single bedrooms, 2 bathrooms and a communal
kitchen and living room, and all Townhouses have 2 bedrooms.
• At the Vermillion campus Most first year students will be in a double room, as there are a limited
number of singles. Bathrooms are shared by no more than four students. Each building has common
TV, kitchen, and laundry facilities. However they do offer town houses and delta housing for their
students as well.
