4. Agile people make agile organisations
You are the Lilliputians who can change the
Organisation but only by being Agile yourself.
Organisations are only agile because the people in
them are Agile. This means YOU!
‘Ask not what your Organisation can do for
you . . . .
And there is help out there if you know where to
look for it. . . . . .
6. We are uncovering better ways of developing software by doing it and
helping others do it.
Through this work we have come to value:
Individuals and interactions over processes and tools
Working software over comprehensive documentation
Customer collaboration over contract negotiation
Responding to change over following a plan
That is, while there is value in the items on
the right, we value the items on the left more.
The Agile Manifesto
7. What can YOU do for Organisational Agility?
Value Individuals and Interactions over Processes
and Tools.
Be a responsible rebel, challenge the Organisation
if a process or a tool is not making sense.
The responsible aspect is about suggesting a
viable alternative rather than just saying ‘I’m not
doing that it’s a waste of my time’
Example: Release Schedules often stifle frequent
delivery of business value
9. What’s your story?
As A (user of the xxx process)
I (did this)
And this happened
Flawed process
10. What’s your story?
As A (user)
When I (do this)
I Want this to happen
How do we get from Flawed process to Awesome interaction?
Awesome interaction
11. Ted’s example
As a conscientious employee
I wanted to update my CV on
the company system
And it was so hard to
understand that I gave up
As a conscientious
employee
When I want to update my
CV on the company system
I want it to be a simple
step by step process
How do we get from Flawed process to Awesome interaction?
Flawed process
Awesome interaction
12. What action will you take?
Let’s use the wisdom of the crowd . . .
13. Agile Action Template
! For (the organisation I have chosen)
! I will (the small simple step action I have
devised)
! By (the date I will do it by)
my email address is
14. And Finally . . Can big organisations be agile?
! Yes, but only if the Lilliputians in the organisation are agile
! This means you!
! You have to challenge processes where they don’t make
sense and encourage your colleagues to do the same.
! Don’t be the victim of flawed process, aim for awesome
interactions and take small, simple steps towards the goal
of agile organisation
! The agile community is already agitating for sustainable
change, we need to exploit every opportunity for change
and ensure that we are not the victims of flawed process

16. From Agile projects to Agile organisations:- The journey
Summary
The first steps towards becoming Agile in big organisations are often successful especially if the
focus is on delivering true business value at the level of individual products and services. But how
do you then scale this up so that eventually your whole organisation embraces agile principles?
Agile is not just about IT delivery, it’s a mentality that needs to percolate through to individuals
in every part of the organisation in order to maximise productivity, quality and most importantly
responsiveness to changing markets and priorities. Scaling agile across the wider organisation
requires an approach that is both influential and persuasive. This is a highly collaborative session
that will challenge you to identify an opportunity to effect change in a large organisation and
carry it through.
