Vegetarianism

In recent years, vegetarianism has evolved from personal
preference to a rock star status brimming with political
ramifications. When it comes to abstaining from meat,
there are some pretty strong arguments coming from all
sides of the camp – the meat eaters, the plant eaters, and
environmentals. Let me take thru some of the main points.
Definition

Description Vegetarianism
 noun (Concise Encyclopedia)

 Theory or practice of eating only
   plants. The vegetarian diet includes
grains, vegetables, fruits, and nuts; it
   excludes meat, poultry, and fish
 It may also include abstention from
   by-products of animal products
   , such as gelatin.

                 merriam-webster.com
History

 The earliest records of (lacto) vegetarianism
come from ancient India and ancient Greece in
the 6th century BCE. In Asia, diet was closely
connected with the idea of nonviolence towards
animals (called ahimsa in India) and was
promoted by religious groups and philosophers.
 Among the Egyptians and others, it had medical
    or Ritual purification purposes.
 The Vegetarian Society, founded in 1847, says
that the word "vegetarian" is derived from the
Latin word vegetus meaning lively or vigorous.
Vegetarianism and Religions
After researching and reading several articles I noticed that many
ancient religions are vegetarian or lacto-vegetarians.
Even the three main heavenly religions, allow the consumption of meat
but they stress that it should be in moderation and in minimal quantities.

      BUDDHISM
.. The most important thing is to stop killing... because animals also have souls and understand like
      humans...
      .
      CHRISTIANITY
“And while the flesh was yet between their teeth, ere it was chewed, the wrath of the LORD was
kindled against the people, and the LORD smote the people with a very great plague.”
      ~ Numbers 11:33, Holy Bible

      HINDUISM
“Since you...cannot bring killed animals back to life, you are responsible for killing them. Therefore
you are going to hell; there is no way for your deliverance.”
      ~ Adi-lila, Chapter 17, verses 159-165

      ISLAM
Do not allow your stomachs to become graveyards of animals!
      ~ Prophet Muhammad, Hadith

      JUDAISM
I WILL EVEN SET MY FACE AGAINST THAT SOUL THAT EATETH BLOOD*, and will cut him off from
      among his people.
      *blood: meaning “flesh”
      ~ Leviticus 17:10, Holy Bible
How many kinds of
           Vegetarianism is there
Semi-vegetarianism or flexitarian:
diet is one that is mainly vegetarian-
based with the occasional inclusion
of meat products

                       Ovo-lacto vegetarianism
                       (or lacto-ovo vegetarianism) includes
animal/dairy products such as eggs, milk, and
                       honey.
Varieties of vegetarianism

                           Veganism A Vegan is the
name given to people who do
                           not consume any animal
                           products. This would include
                           meats, poultry, fish and
                           seafood and also any dairy
                           products or eggs..

Lacto vegetarianism
includes dairy products but not eggs.
Health

Effect of vegetarianism human health

Vegetarian diets are lower in saturated
fats, cholesterol, and animal protein.
They’re also high in anti-oxidant vitamins
like C and E, carotenoids, and
phytochemicals.
   Overall, vegetarians have substantially
reduced risks for obesity, heart
disease, high blood pressure, diabetes
mellitus, osteoporosis, hypertension, and
some forms of cancer - particularly lung
cancer and colon cancer.
Vegetarian diets that are low in
saturated fats have been successfully
used to reverse severe coronary artery
disease.
Health

A powerful article in the Huff post Healthy
Living, wrote of the benefits to health of
                becoming a vegetarian.
It stated Vegetarians live on average 8 years
longer than meat eaters. This is about the
same as researchers have found is the
                difference between smokers and non-
                smokers.
Meat consumption is also linked to Cancer
                and the top ten killers.

The American Dietetic Association and Dietitians of
Canada have stated that at all stages of life, a
properly planned vegetarian diet is
"healthful, nutritionally adequate, and provides
health benefits in the prevention and treatment of
certain diseases.
Health

In the interview, the Former US President Bill Clinton explains the
reason behind his decision to go vegan.
Health

Top killer responsible for almost 50 present off all deaths in the world

As a 1961 journal of the American medical association had announced

90 present of heart diseases can be prevented by a vegetarian diet

Meat and fish contains carcinogens that attack cell’s DNA and develop cancer

Carcinogens are also found in cigarettes

Meat contains more harmful chemicals than plant foods
The killing of animals
Animals experience fear prior to being
slaughtered. Just before terrified animals are
slaughtered, they release a host of hormones
and toxic substances into their bodies.

After the animals have been slaughtered, those
hormones remain in their bodies and begin to
alter the animal meat. The quality of the meat
deteriorates significantly. When you eat this
tainted animal meat, you ingest those
hormones into your body. Doing so can cause
a host of unwanted medical conditions and
diseases.
Effect globally
How Meat Contributes to Global
          Warming
Effect globally

 Pound for pound, beef production generates
greenhouse gases that contribute more than 13
times as much to global warming as do the gases
emitted from producing chicken. For potatoes, the
    multiplier is 57.
 Beef consumption is rising rapidly, both as population
increases and as people eat more meat.
 Producing the annual beef diet of the average
American emits as much greenhouse gas as a car
    driven more than 1,800 miles.
Effect globally

           BioHealthScience.org
Highlighted some important possibilities
of vegetarianism. It stated that the
world may be forced to be Vegetarian
                 by 2050.
70% of available water is in agriculture
and most of that goes into the feeding
     of livestock. It concluded that
vegetarianism is one option to combat
              water shortages.
Effect globally
Gas pollution
World hunger

World hunger
20 million people die annual as a result of malnutrition

Producing one pound of beef requires 16 pounds of
edible grain which can be used to feed the hungry
World hunger

16 kg of grain feeds 20
            people

16 kg of grain feeds one cow

      that feed 2 people
World hunger

Millions of people could be feed, if North Americans
reduced their intake of meat by mere 10 percent

According to the population reference bureau
If every one adopted a vegetarian diet current food
production would feed 10 billion people more than
the projected population in the year 2015
IQ

According to a report from Psychology Today, that could very well be
the case. The study reports that British people who are vegetarian at
a young age have a much higher intelligence than those who were
not vegetarian at the same age. The vegetarians have a mean
childhood IQ of 109.1 whereas the non-vegetarians have a mean
childhood IQ of 100.9.

This holds true for both men and women. Women vegetarians have a
mean childhood IQ of 108 while the female meat eaters have a
mean childhood IQ of 100.7. When it comes to men the vegetarians
had a mean IQ of 111 and the non-vegetarians had a mean IQ of
101.1.
Famous people

No matter what stand you take on
vegetarianism, you may be surprised to
know that some of the world’s greatest
geniuses were vegetarians. Yes, that seems
to be the case. Even before eating meat
was considered barbaric in some circles, the
early pioneers of genius were eating fruit and
vegetables and foregoing meat.
Famous people who are
vegetarian
Why do people eat meat?

Why do people think it is ok to eat
       meat when there
      ARE ALTERNATIVES ?
People eat meat because we have evolved to eat meat. It's biological
instinct. We eat meat for the same reason that tigers or wolves eat
meat.

Susan schenck, the author of whole foods
rewrote a book after going back to meat
     called beyond broccoli

She realized that she became a vegetarian because she did not want
to be part of animals’ suffering to feed people. Once she started
raising her own animals she had no problem eating meat again.
 In todays busy world it seems easier
    to have proccessed meat available
    instead of preparing a vegetarian
    meal

 I've noticed that people are under
the impression that meat is the most
readily abundant source of food. I
    don't think that anyone was
    advocating that production of meat
be stopped immediately, it would be
    a gradual process.
Conclusion

Vegetarianism is not a complicated issue. It is a matter of lifestyle
and beliefs. However changing ones diet so drastically after many
years can be tricky. Among some of the issues to pay attention to, is
to eat plant foods rich in protein to make up for the loss of meat in
the diet. like lentils or beans which are rich in proteins.
It is also important not to eat too much of one item. Additionally it
is important to consume a wide variety of foods to maintain a
nutritional balance

In order to have a balanced diet and be a vegetarian, one must take
added supplements to fill nutritional needs.
•VitaminB12 pills •Iron tablets •Calcium pills
Becoming a vegtarian or a flexitarian is a win-win stuatiom
 Improves your health
 Feeds the world
 Saves our Environment from global warming
We all have a role on this earth to preserve it for future generations.
General information

the American Dialect Society voted flexitarian as the year's most useful
                         word and defined it as
"a vegetarian who occasionally eats meat"

I highly recommend watching he documentary vegucated
SYNOPSIS
Part sociological experiment and part adventure
comedy, Vegucated follows three meat- and cheese-loving New
Yorkers who agree to adopt a vegan diet for six weeks. Lured by tales
of weight lost and health regained, they begin to uncover the
hidden sides of animal agriculture that make them wonder whether
solutions offered in films like Food, Inc. go far enough. This
entertaining documentary showcases the rapid and at times
comedic evolution of three people who discover they can change
the world one bite at a time.
