of the Essential Skills and work habits important for
work, learning and life. Essential Skills are used in virtually all
occupations and are transferable from school to work, job to

17. ESL (English as a Second Language)
 Eligibility – all immigrants
 18 years of age and older
 Refugee claimants, convention refugees, permanent residents
(landed immigrants) and Canadian citizens
 Not for speakers of English or French as a first language
 Visitors - $6.00 per hour

18. ESL Registration
 No registration fees (exceptions: COSTI, CICS and Skills for
Change) on site registration
 2 documents required – proof of status and proof of residency
(one must be a photo ID)
 On site assessment using a CLB referenced assessment tool
followed by CLB placement
 Provincially funded – Ministry of Citizenship and Immigration,
Ontario

19. LINC Language Instruction for Newcomers
to Canada
 Eligibility: permanent residents (landed immigrants) and
convention refugees)
 Registration: YMCA referral form; no registration fee
 Assessment: YMCA- uses Canadian Language Benchmark
Placement Test (CLBPT)
 Funding: federal – Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC)
 Free child minding service : 18 months to 6 years

 Minimum CLB 4 for occupation specific programs
 Some programs may require a higher level

21. Accounting and Computer Skills
 Pre-requisites: CLB 5/6, keyboarding @ 25 wpm
 14 week program; registration fee; $40.00
 Immigrants who speak English as a Second Language (same
criterion for all programs)
 Little accounting or office experience
 Development of English language and communication skills
through the study of accounting principles, computer skills and
work search strategies

22. Retail and Customer Service Skills
 pre-requisites: CLB 6-7
 10 week program; registration fee; $40.00
 Improve English communication for retail
 Develop corporate terminology
 Learn conflict resolution skills
 Develop a service management strategy to ensure service
quality
 6 week placement following the course at a Hudson’s Bay
store, Zellers or Home Outfitters

23. Language Upgrading for Internationally
Trained Teachers
 Pre-requisites: CLB 7, landed immigrant, convention refugee or
Canadian citizen
 11 weeks Part 1; 14 weeks Part 2; part-time program
 Preparation to pass the language proficiency test
 Interest in further language development
 Elementary and secondary system in Ontario
 Parent/teacher interviews

24. Hospital Volunteer English Language
Training Program
 Pre-requisites: CLB 4, information session, interview with
volunteer coordinator, police check, TB test and CLB testing
 Free; 2 sessions September-December and February-May
 21/2 days of classroom instruction (M. W. Th. A.m.)
 1 day of volunteering (Tues.) at Toronto East General Hospital
 Physiological systems
 Communication skills with staff and patients
 Volunteer responsibilities – asking and offering assistance

25. Specialized Language Training
 Pre-requisites CLB 3-6
 Focus on language skills necessary for childcare or home
healthcare
 Prior learning assessment and individualized career path
 Fee; part-time classes
 Day, evening and Saturday classes available
 Development of additional language skills needed for these
areas

26. Enhanced Language Training for ESL
Instructors
 Pre-requisites: CLB 7 in all 4 skill areas; preferably a foreign–
trained language teacher; landed immigrant or convention
refugee
 Prior learning assessment and individualized career path
 Starting Apr. 2009; 200 hours of in-class training
 25 hours of work placement
 Bridge to work component in a Canadian ESL classroom
 10 hours of professional development
 Sector specific language upgrading
 Development of oral, written and socio-cultural skills

 Free Newcomer Services: Support and counselling, Information &
Workshops, Interpretation / Translation, Assistance with Forms &
Applications
 Settlement Services Covering: Health, Housing, Child Care,

 Service is provided for more than 20 languages
 4 self-access resource centres
 Funding: Federal – Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC)
