SITE CONTEXT HISTORY OF MAYOWOOD
-The estate of Mayowood is a complex of buildings that were originally
created and designed by Dr. Charles H. Mayo, founder of the Mayo Clinic, from 1911-1939. It then
became the home of his son Dr. Charles W. Mayo from 1939-1968
-It covered 3,000 acres and included a man-made lake, gardens, a wildlife preserve, a horse track,
nine active farms, and numerous other buildings and landscape elements
-Dr. Mayo donated the complex to the Olmstead County History in 1965
-The Mayowood Mansion was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1910, the district
Minneapolis to Mayowood Mayo Clinic to Mayowood Mansion & landscape were added in 1970

2. The Mayowood Rehabilitation Center will provide a relaxing and calming environment for long term, as well as short term patients. Dr. Charles Mayo’s
Mayowood Rehabilitation Center philosophy was to integrate and educate through the natural landscape. The rebabilitation center will be a space and home of comfort and healing
because of the built and natural spaces of the site.
