Don’t drink and don’t smoke! By Matt Sandles
A personal note Hi, my name is Matt Sandles. I am in my third year at CMU. I chose this topic for my PowerPoint because I feel strongly that it is important not to use drugs, drink alcohol, or smoke cigarettes. Drugs would have been too broad for this PowerPoint. For whatever reason, a large majority of students at CMU choose to drink, smoke, or do both. I am one of the few that does not. Thus, I feel the need to educate my peers about the dangers of what they are doing.
Alcohol is dangerous! Both adults and kids need to limit their alcohol consumption seeing as it can be harmful to both of them. The #1 drug used by teenagers is alcohol. Some kids seem to think that drinking is okay because they see adults doing it. One type of drug is a depressant. Alcohol is a depressant.
Alcohol is dangerous! Alcohol can distort what a person perceives to be reality! Alcohol can cause people to do things that they may not normally do (such as saying mean and disrespectful things to others). Drinking and driving is dangerous to yourself and others. Waking up with a hangover is a sign that you have had too much to drink the night before.
Alcohol is dangerous! Alcohol poisoning affects people who drink too much alcohol over an extended period of time. Death is a potential result of alcohol poisoning. Liver damage is a common result of drinking too much alcohol. This can be particularly harmful because the liver filters out poison from the body.
Alcohol is dangerous! In the United States of America, you must be at least twenty one years old in order to legally purchase and consume alcohol. However, lots of people elect to ignore this law. Alcoholics cannot control their alcohol consumption. There is an increased chance of this happening to people who started drinking at a very young age (perhaps as a middle school or high school student).
Alcohol is dangerous! Alcoholism can ruin a person’s entire life. Drinking alcohol can damage a person’s heart, brain, and pancreas (among other body parts). It is up to you whether or not to drink. It is a choice that you need to make. Don’t think you need to just because your friends are. You need to do what is in your best interest. This will help you realize who your real friends are.
Alcohol is dangerous! If you know a kid who you feel has a drinking problem, you need to tell someone who is in a position of authority. The kids who drink alcohol illegally are the ones who are also more likely to get in other sorts of legal trouble. Just don’t do it!
Smoking is bad! If you do not currently smoke, do not start. If you currently smoke, quitting would be in the best interest of you and your family members. Quitting is actually a priority for most current smokers. Quitting shows immediate benefits. Various cancers and heart problems can arise from smoking. Quitting can help decrease the risk of these things occurring.
Smoking is bad! You can prolong your life by not smoking (or quitting if you already do). Studies show that non-smokers live over a decade longer (on average) than smokers do. People who quit smoking still have a chance to redeem those years of their life. Cigarettes have nicotine. Nicotine is a drug. People get addicted to nicotine. Thus, that is why people get addicted to smoking cigarettes.
Smoking is bad! Alcohol, heroin, and cocaine have something in common with nicotine. They are all addictive and potentially deadly drugs. Smoking cigarettes gives off what is known as secondhand smoke. It can be a cause of heart disease (hypertension) and cancer (among other things). Young people (specifically babies and young children) are specifically susceptible to the harmful effects of secondhand smoke. They can get a wide variety of nasty respiratory infections.
Smoking is bad! People who do not smoke save a lot of money that would otherwise be spent on cigarettes. It could save a person in upwards of several thousand dollars a year. Quitting smoking will simply improve how a person feels physically. People who quit smoking have less blemishes on their skin and are less likely to have yellow, tobacco-stained teeth.
Smoking is bad! People who do not smoke tend to smell better than people who do. This can help a person when they are dating! Other senses (such as the sense of smell and the sense of taste) will improve if you stop smoking. If you are a female smoker and you are pregnant, you could be harming your child with each cigarette that you smoke.
Smoking is bad! Male smokers can have sexual problems such as erectile dysfunction. Men, don’t smoke if you want to have a successful sex life! Women who smoke may find getting pregnant to be an arduous task. Even if they do get pregnant, they may miscarry easily. In Michigan, people are not even allowed to smoke in restaurants anymore. There is a reason for that. Smoking is embarrassing!
Smoking is bad! In Michigan, people are not even allowed to smoke in restaurants anymore. There is a reason for that. Smoking is embarrassing! Men, women find smoking disgusting! Would you pick a cigarette over a beautiful woman? No!
