INTRODUCTION


A supercharger is an air compressor used for forced
induction of an internal combustion engine.



The higher concentration of oxygen provided by a supercharger is matched with a larger amount of fuel from the
fuel injectors thus boosting the power of the engine.
Principle of working


More fuel + More air = Bigger explosion = Greater horsepower

 But

we cannot simply pump more fuel into the engine.

chemically correct mixture – (14 : 1 :: air : fuel) – is
essential for an engine to operate perfectly.

 The


Thus superchargers provides more air by compressing air
above atmospheric pressure , hence providing more fuel into
the charge & would make for a more powerful explosion .

 Thus:

Increased Power , Torque and Speed is achieved.
SUPERCHARGER TYPES


1.

BASICLY THREE MAIN TYPES OF THE
SUPERCHARGERS:-

Roots Types

2. Centrifugal Type
3. Screw Type
Roots supercharger


It consists two cylindrically shaped lobes in opposite direction in a
common housing.



Air enters the space in between the rotor lobes at inlet and is carried
around the rotor to discharge port.
A standard engine with the addition of a supercharger
Centrifugal Superchargers


It consists an impeller which is rotates in
clock-wise direction.



The air enters the hub of the impeller
axially and is turned radially by radial
vanes.



The air leaves the impeller at high speed,
but low pressure.



A diffuser converts the high-speed , lowpressure air to low-speed , high-pressure air.
Twin-Screw Supercharger


It contains a set of worm gears.



Air enters in supercharger through the top rear and
it’s compressed between the rotors.



The male rotor is rotates in clock-wise while female
rotor rotates counter clock-wise and compressed air
between them.



Once the air is screwed and compressed the full
length of the rotors it remains in compressed state
between the rotors until the engine demands the
boosted air.
Drives used in supercharger
Mechanical:

Belt



Gear drive



Chain drive.

Other:

Electric motor.
Advantages of Supercharger



Increased power



No lag – Consistent power delivery



Generally better throttle response




No Special Procedures or extra maintenance
Easier to install than turbochargers
Disadvantages of Supercharger



Consumes a lot of power from the engine (therefore not very
efficient)
Increases the strain on the engine



Expensive



Noise
