What is Multimedia
Multi
Media
Many or more than one.
Medium of Communication
Multimedia
In Computer,Multimedia means that computer
information can be represented through audio, video,
and animation in addition to traditional media
What is Multimedia Data
Multimedia data refers to data that consist of various media types
like text, audio, video, and animation
What is Database
A database is a collection of information organized to provide efficient retrieval.
The collected information could be in any number of formats (electronic, printed,
graphic, audio, statistical, combinations)
A database could be as simple as an alphabetical arrangement of names in an
address book or as complex as a database that provides information in a
combination of formats.
Examples:
•phone book
•address book
What is Multimedia Database
A Multimedia database (MMDB) is a collection of related multimedia
data. The multimedia data include one or more primary media data
types such as text, images, graphic objects (including drawings,
sketches and illustrations) animation sequences, audio and video etc.
Multimedia database systems are
database systems where, besides text
and other discrete data, audio and video
information will also be stored,
manipulated and retrieved.
•Linked Multimedia Databases:
Multimedia database can be organized as a database of metadata(Data about data).
This metadata links to the actual data such as graphic, image, animation, audio, sound etc.
These data may be stored on Hard Disc, CD-ROM, DVD or Online.
In this database, multimedia elements are organized as image, audio/ MP3, video etc.
Advantage of this type of database is that the size of database will be small because elements
are not embedded in the database, but only linked to it.
•Embedded Multimedia Database:
Embedded Multimedia Database implies that the database itself contains the
multimedia objects as in the binary form in the database.
The main advantage of such kind of database is that retrieval of data will be faster
because of the reduced data access time.
However, the size of the database will be very large.
There are two types of multimedia Database & they are as follows
Types Of Multimedia DatabaseTypes Of Multimedia Database
A Multimedia Database Management
System(MMDBMS) is a framework that manages
different type of data potentially represented in a
wide diversity of formats.
It provides support for multimedia data types and
facilitate for creation, storage, access, query and
control of a multimedia database.
What is Multimedia Database Management
System(MMDBMS)
Like the traditional databases, Multimedia databases should address the following
requirements:
Integration
Data items do not need to be duplicated for different programs invocations
Data independence
Separate the database and the management from the application programs
Persistence(Reusability)
Data objects can be saved and re-used by different transactions and program
     invocations
Requirements of MultimediaRequirements of Multimedia
Database(MMDB)Database(MMDB)
Privacy
Access and authorization control
Integrity control
Ensures database consistency between transactions
Recovery
Failures of transactions should not affect the persistent data storage
Query support
Allows easy querying of multimedia data
Some Largest Databases across the World
WDCC{World Data Centre for Climate}:
WDCC, operated by the Max Planck Institute for
Meteorology and German Climate Computing Centre, also
are the proud owners of a supercomputer worth 35 million
Euros. Excluding the 220 terabyte, which are accessible
across the web; the WDCC also has an additional 110
terabytes of data that are mainly used for climate
simulation and 6 petabytes of extra data’s that are stored
in magnetic tapes for easy access.
NERSC(National Energy Research Scientific
computing Centre) The NERSC based in Oakland, California has a unique
kind of database that non others can even think of. The
NERSC database comprises a mammoth 2.8 petabytes
of information that vary from atomic energy research,
high energy physics experiments . The NERSC which
are owned and operated by the Lawrence Berkeley
National Laboratory and the U.S Department of
Energy.
The giants in internet searching- Although the
exact size of Google’s database is unknown, it’s
said that Google accounts every single search
that makes each day into its database which is
around 91 million searches per day.
Google stores every search and makes patterns from
previous searches so that the user can be easily directed.
Google also collects information of their users and stores
them as entries in their database which is said to expand
over 33 trillion entries. On top of that Google has simply
expanded their database with Gmail and Google ads and
with their acquisitions like YouTube
With a massive 59 million active customers and more than 42
terabytes of data, it’s Amazon that races itself in our list of largest
database across the world.
World’s largest retail store, Amazon has huge collection of data that
includes general information like phone number and address to
receipts and wish lists and any sort of data that the website can
extract from its users as they are logged on.
It’s said that Amazon has a mass collection of 250,000 full text books
which are available online. No wonder Amazon is considered as the
world’s largest online community as users can interact and comment
virtually on every page of this website.
60 hours of video are uploaded every minute, or
one hour of video is uploaded to YouTube every second.
Over 4 billion videos are viewed a day
Over 800 million unique users visit YouTube each month
Over 3 billion hours of video are watched each month on YouTube
The owners of the largest online video library- YouTube is one of
largest video and audio databases across the world. Reports say
that about a 100 million videos are watched in YouTube which is
about 60% of the overall number of videos watched online. Still
the Wall Street Journal in 2006 reported that YouTube’s database
features around 45 Terabytes of data. 45 terabytes won’t sound
like a large number but when you consider that around 65,000
new videos are being posted daily in YouTube, just think of the
database that they now are having.
