Visiting Lecture: Plymouth College of Arts In this first of our series of visiting lectures, Debbie Holley, Professor of Learning Innovation at Bournemouth University challenges us to explore the boundaries of the digital, while still ensuring that our own digital health and wellbeing is protected, along with that of our students. Debbie will share examples of her work leading teams embedding creativity (online) through the disciplines, with considerations for the health and wellbeing for all. We will conclude the talk with a panel discussion about how we may like to take some of the ideas forward. The event will be recorded, and the slides shared. Debbie has requested that you bring along your SMART (internet connected) mobile phones, but emphasises this workshop is suitable for all. Dr Ben Goldsmith, from the Bournemouth University learning technology team, will join us to talk about what is possible at the panel! Debbie is a National Teaching Fellow, a Principle Fellow of AdvanceHE and on the JISC student experience experts panel. She has research interests in digital competence frameworks, augmented reality, virtual reality and simulations. Ben is a Learning Technologist at Bournemouth University and a Fellow of AdvanceHE. His research interests include digital and media literacy, the use of media and digital content and tools in secondary and tertiary education, and the engagement of critical theory with approaches to learning. Technology: driver, solution or symptom?

Technology: driver, solution or symptom?

Technology: driver, solution or symptom?

Although there is a considerable body of work that explores educational uses of technology, and highly developed accounts of what learning is, surprisingly little research in education has asked what technology is, or what its relationship to learning consists of. When these matters are considered at all, they tend to be framed in technologically deterministic ways, with technology either 'causing' or at the least 'offering' and 'constraining' learning. In this talk, I will provide an overview of this way of framing technology and identify problems that follow from it. I will outline alternative positions that could be adopted, including Communities of Practice, the Social Construction of Technology and Actor-Network Theory, and discuss their points of connection to this debate. Using examples drawn from a JISC-funded project on digital literacies, I will draw out the implications of these positions for research.

From email to word processors to web sites, technology has become an integral part of Higher Education. It has been a mainstay of government educational policy for decades, and has featured in HE policy since at least 1965. Yet strangely, studies of technology often remain detached from wider educational research. In this session, I will explore some of the reasons for this, outlining the kinds of work on learning and technology that are being undertaken. I will also introduce some less common perspectives and approaches, which show how technology can act as an important site for understanding wider educational concerns.

In BC’s nearly-decade-old “new” curriculum, the curricular competencies describe the processes that students are expected to develop in areas of learning such as mathematics. They reflect the “Do” in the “Know-Do-Understand” model. Under the “Communicating” header falls the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions.” Note that it contains two processes: “Explain mathematical ideas” and “Justify mathematical decisions.” I have broken it down into its separate parts in order to understand--or reveal--its meaning. The first part is commonplace in classrooms. By now, BC math teachers—and students—understand that “Explain mathematical ideas” means more than “Show your work.” Teachers consistently ask “What did you do?” and “How do you know?” This process is about retelling, not just of steps but of thinking. The second part happens less frequently. Think back to the last time that you observed a student make—a necessary precursor to justify—a mathematical decision. “Justify” is about defending. Like “explain,” it involves reasoning; unlike “explain,” it also involves opinion and debate. In order to reinterpret the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions,” I will continue to take apart its constituent part “Justify mathematical decisions” and carefully examine the term “mathematical decisions.” What, exactly, is a “mathematical decision”? Below, I will categorize answers to this question. These categories, and the provided examples, may help to suggest new opportunities for students to justify.
