Heraclitus Ethos Pathos And Logos
Seetha Aribindi
Heraclitus was one of the natural philosophers from Ephesus in Asia Minor, circa 540 480 B.C. , who
believed that constant change or flow was the basic characteristic of nature. He believed the world was
characterized by opposites and it would cease to exist without their constant interplay. God is day and
night, winter and summer, war and peace, hunger and satiety, he said, believing God can be seen most
clearly in constant transformations and contrasts in nature. (p 28) But instead of God he used the greek
word logos which means reason, as he believed that there must be a kind of universal reason or
universal law guiding everybody and everything that happens in nature. Thus amid constant flux and
opposites throughout nature, Heraclitus believed an Entity or one ness , called God or logos was the
source of everything. Aristotle, the last of the great Greek philosophers, circa 384 322 B.C. and the
first of Europe s great biologists , who studied at Plato s academy. He believed that everything in the
natural world can be categorized into nonliving things with no potential for change, and living ...

The lowest being aesthetic relating to the world of senses, concerned with enjoyment , where one is

second termed ethical filled with seriousness and moral ethics similar to elaborated by Kant, which
may become tiresome and may not completely satisfy. The third stage religious which although may

English Ivy Research Paper
The plant known as English ivy is a climbing vine, having smooth, shiny, evergreen leaves, small,
yellowish flowers, and black berries grown as an ornamental. The plant is mostly known for growing
on buildings like it once did on some of the most prestigious schools in America, but the plant has
other uses. It has medicinal uses, its an air purifier, but it still has some side effects. English ivy
originates from Europe, western Asia, and northern Africa. It was introduced in the Americas and like
any new organism introduce to a new ecosystem it will either die or rapidly dominate. That s what this
invasive plant did in America. One of the reasons for that is that it thrives in cold low light situations
and it kills off local vegetation. The Ivy plants thrived on the buildings on Yale s campus until the
1980s that is when an effort was made to get rid of them because to damage the buildings. This what

The definitions range from pirate , describing the actions of the raiders from Scandinavia; some say it
is a reference to the people from Viken (Oslo Fjord); still others use the word to describe the entire
ethnic group originating in the Scandinavian countries of Norway and Sweden.
(http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2004/02/0217_040217_vikings.html) The word Viking is
actually derived from the Old Norse word vikingar and is exclusively applied to men, usually those
who sailed from Scandinavia in groups to engage in the activities of raiding and trading in Britain,
Europe and the East. (http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/ancient/vikings/women_01.shtml) nbsp; nbsp;
nbsp; nbsp; nbsp;Even though the definition suggests that women could not be Vikings, evidence
suggests that women maintained an honored and important role in their society, remaining behind
while the men went trading, Viking, or hunting to keep the children and homesteads safe. The women
had to ensure that their food would last through the long, cold winters of their homelands. They were
expected to have a thorough knowledge of herbs for medicinal purposes and were responsible for the
success of the farm while the men were away. (http://www.viking.no/e/life/ewomen.htm) Fortunately

Essay On Energy Recovery
Energy Recovery
Anaerobic treatment gives a high potential of energy recovery from wastewater in form of biogas. The
effluent can also serve industrial heating and cooling purposes. Wastewater has a huge potential of
electricity generation. Technologies exist for on site energy recovery through sludge/biosolids
treatment processes integrated in wastewater treatment plants, allowing for transition from major
energy consumers to energy producers.
Strict standards for discharge often require energy intensive advanced treatment technologies. As a
result, the number of plants using advanced treatment has increased [17]. Rising energy costs and
concerns about greenhouse gas generation present a major incentive for tracking energy usage of ...

Biogas is a mixture essentially comprising mostly methane (CH4, around 55 75%) but also contains
carbon dioxide (CO2, around 25 30%), varying quantities of water (H2O) and hydrogen sulphide
(H2S). The thermal energy available from the methane contained in biogas is about 6 to 8 kWh/m3.
This corresponds to half a litre of diesel oil and 5.5 kg of firewood [21].
4.2 Microbial Fuel Cell Technology
Wastewater treatment is an energy intensive process, consuming about 1,900 kJ/m3 of treated
wastewater [22]. Wastewater contains almost 9 times more energy than the energy used to treat an
equivalent volume, thus creating the need to harness this energy through the use of a Microbial Fuel
Cell (MFC) [22]. Microbial Fuel cell (MFC) is a device designed for electricity generation in the
process of wastewater treatment [23]. Microbial fuel cell is a new form of renewable energy, which
uses bacteria in wastewater to convert organic matter into electricity, while simultaneously treating the
wastewater. MFCs can provide an answer to several of the problems which traditional wastewater
treatment faces. They enable the recovery of energy out of the wastewater, while limiting both the
energy input and the excess sludge production [24].
5.0 Nutrient recovery
Wastewater nutrients are resources that can generate revenues for treatment plants while helping meet
environmental regulations. Wastewater and municipal sludge, can be a reliable source of nutrients, in

Review Of What Women Can Learn From Men By Margaret Wente
A Review of What Women Can Learn From Men By Margaret Wente Margaret Wente s July 2015
Globe and Mail article, What Women Can Learn From Men addresses a common phenomenon, the
comparison: between men and women. With her article, she hopes to advise women on how they can
improve themselves and their lives with simple changes. Furthermore, she wisely chooses to avoid a
sexist approach by commending men on their behavioral traits despite her gender. Infact, using logical
implications, she portrayed herself as an example rather than offend her audience. Additionally,
through evidence, figures, facts and a link, she skillfully supports her theories thus making her article
significantly factual and effective. Although Margaret starts by stereotypically generalising men, she
depicts some of their great qualities that women can truly learn from. Using different approaches, she
portrays women and their thoughts then skillfully explains how they can better themselves by thinking
like men. Despite how she initially condemned men, she concludes by logically beseeching that man
shaming has gone far enough and should stop. Despite being an article in the extensively read
Canadian newspaper the Globe and mail , Margaret s target audience is the broad female population.
She therefore uses a different approach, one with less specialized language, as was stated in Mind
Wide Open. The purpose is quite clear: she portrays women s behavioral traits and their thoughts then

Should Video Games Be Considered A Sport Essay
Should videogames be considered a sport?
With the advancement in technology and the growing gaming world, Esports are growing rapidly, the
competition is getting tougher in tournaments, and millions are tuning in to watch. Some people says
that the video games shouldn t or will never be a Sport, but the thing that they don t know is that is
slowly becoming one with no one noticing it. The Sports are all forms of usually competitive physical
activity or games which, through casual or organized participation, aim to use, maintain or improve

individual entrepreneurs according to Gordon Boyce and Simon Ville. The first industrial revolution
which began in England in the mid 18th century was a period of economic growth that deeply changed
the structure and the processes of the old business entities. Josiah Wedgwood and his pottery business

challenges that Wedgwood and his partners took up.

First of all, financial institutions were rare in Britain at this time. Therefore, it was very hard to find an
investor in order to buy machines and equipment. Once again, networking practices were crucial to
contact aristocrats who were willing to lend money. Another financial problem is related to the lack of
standards and tools to run a business at this time. As Wedgwood explained during the vase madness
period, the financial health of the company was in peril even if they sold a considerable amount of
vases. In fact, he bought a lot of raw materials but in the same time his business partner didn t collect
quite quickly the bills. This situation influenced negatively the liquid assets of Wedgwood s business.
As Wedgwood and Bentley were afraid of making the same mistake in the future, they created a price
book of workmanship and separate fixed and variable costs. These tools are still used nowadays, the
price book could be compared to the profit and loss statement and fixed and variable costs are one of
the most famous theories in management

Analysis of Tchaikovsky s Swan Lake Essay
Tchaikovsky is one of the most popular of all composers. The reasons are several and understandable.
His music is extremely tuneful, opulently and colourfully scored, and filled with emotional passion.
Undoubtedly the emotional temperature of the music reflected the composer s nature. He was afflicted
by both repressed homosexuality and by the tendency to extreme fluctuations between ecstasy and
depression. Tchaikovsky was neurotic and deeply sensitive, and his life was often painful, but through
the agony shone a genius that created some of the most beautiful of all romantic melodies. With his
rich gifts for melody and special flair for writing memorable dance tunes, with his ready response to

The harp plays ascending scales whilst the oboe plays a minor legato melody. The bass strings play
pizzicato then the rest of the string section play tremolando and Crescendo. The brass repeats the
melody, accompanied by the orchestra and a string tremolando inverted pedal. A string melody
follows, accompanied by pizzicato strings and brass. There is a series of suspensions in the brass with
perfect cadences, then an anticlimax with descending strings and brass. The main melody is repeated
again, syncopated, in augmentation then there is a diminuendo as melody strings then French horn

The introduction opens with a descending minor scale by pizzicato strings, followed by three

rhythm, which modulates to major. The strings play melody 1, which is then repeated with piccolo
countermelody. Brass and string crescendo and cymbal crash before strings play melody 2 which is

Relationships In D. H. Lawrence s Sons And Lovers
D.H. Lawrence s novel Sons and Lovers explores the significant family and companionate
relationships of early adulthood. Unfortunately, and possibly unbeknownst to Lawrence himself, the
relationships in the novel are often abusive, triangulated, and otherwise inappropriate. Many of these
distorted connections may stem from the unconscious and cyclical perceptions of love by the
characters. In D.H. Lawrence s novel, Sons and Lovers, each character s view of love is shaped by
observing his parents relationship, causing Mrs. Morel and her sons to perceive love as domination
over another person.

When William first gets sick, the doctor describes the illness as pneumonia, and, he said, a peculiar
erysipelas, [a skin disease], which had started under the chin where the collar chafed, and was
spreading over the face . The fact that William s illness targeted his lungs and the area around his
throat alludes to death by strangulation, as he is pulled between his domineering mother and a fiancé
whom he wants to be able to love. Mrs. Morel mourns for her son, unaware of her role in his demise,
and she continues to perpetuate her love as dominance cycle with Paul.
Mrs. Morel imposes upon Paul s relationship with Miriam. Gertrude constantly tells Paul how
common Miriam is, and waits up late for him, like his wife, when he stays out late with Miriam, trying
to make him feel guilty. Paul even realizes at the end of the novel that his mother has been the root of
his failed relationships, and he asserts that I shall never meet the right woman while you live . Paul s
only means of freeing himself from his mother s dominance is to kill her, another dominating act
disguised as love, following Gertrude s path.
The two sons that Gertrude most loved and dominated also seem to feel that domination is true love,
thereby following in Gertrude s footsteps, both sons abusing their lovers. William as a child emits
some of the same sentiments as his mother when she was young.

Sales and Shell Canada
Introduction
This report is based on the case study eStore at Shell Canada Limited (Saunders, 2006).
This case looks at how a traditional business can enter the eBusiness market. This report will look at
the challenges that faced Shell Canada, measurements they could have employed to measure the
progress of eStore deployment and suggestions for dealing with the future challenges facing Shell
Canada.
Report Overview
Due to financial pressure to reduce costs, Shell Canada deployed an eCommerce solution (eStore) to
its agricultural customers.

Shell could have measured performance against:
Reduction in sales and IT staff time spent per client.
Quantity of service requests for invoice retrieval and order placements.
Assign different weighting to each request depending on how much time a sales agent will spend in
field to fulfil these requests.
Schader et al., (2004) also suggest ways of measuring how a website meets a customers needs:
The number of clicks required from website entry to making a purchase
Ease of navigation
Degree and frequency with which website content is changed
The use of personal data to customise website content
It was not until serious problems with customer usage of the web site were noted that Shell Limited
called in specialists, RareMethod, to conduct a user experience review of eStore.
Ultimately eBusiness, is still business (Brache and Webb, 2000), and the question is Is it profitable?
Currently eStore does not deliver the hoped for cost savings to the company through its deployment of
new self serve technology to Shell Canada s agricultural customers.

The Struggle For Political Balance
Delaney Reed Mrs. Barcroft AP Government 9 October 2015 The Struggle for Political Balance
Americans were known as a pioneering people who would struggle and fight to build for themselves.
A people who pushed the entire world into a new era and has continued to push the limits of
technology, military, and culture. After Britain finally surrendered the colonies to the American
citizens a new republican experiment was conducted. One that is still going on to this very day and
every citizen of America is a part of this grand experiment. The British Colonies were independent
from one another before the American Revolution, but a shared enemy began a strong bond between
the states. After things settled down the states were allied with one another in a form of confederation
and then finally under the Constitution as a united republic nation. There were those who were not
completely for a strong central government and favored the confederate style, but there were also
those who found comfort and strength in a centralized federal government. This federalist versus anti
federalist debate has continued throughout all of American history each side with its strengths and
weaknesses. The development of the debate and increase in federalism in American government can
be highlighted by the doctrine of implied powers, commerce clause, the American Civil War, and the
struggle for civil rights. Chief Justice Marshall was a pioneer for setting government precedents and

any resemblance, however compelling, to any Hollywood movie is purely coincidental and accidental.
The rate at which Bollywood standards have fallen, and continuously kept plummeting, would easily

Dust Bowl Refugees In The 1930 s
The 1930 s were a time of tragedy for Midwestern people who lived in the United States, especially
farmers in the Great Plains region. During this time crops perished and winds picked up causing a
massive dust storm to begin. In the course of this catastrophe at least 350,000 Okies loaded their
belongings into cars and trucks and headed to California (Henretta, Hinderaker, Edwards, and Self

These dust bowl refugees thought that California could be their salvation and a lot of them weren t
disappointed because the state distributed millions of dollars worth of relief supplies to dust bowl
refugees, ( Kern Will Probe 6) throughout the 1930 s. However, even with these federal relief
programs a numerous amount of these refugees still weren t wealthy by any means and were at a very
low point in their lives looking for any opportunity to stay alive. This alarming reality lead many of
these refugees to commit crimes for money or just to end up in prison where they would be fed and
sheltered. In San Quentin California alone the states of Arkansas, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas
contributed 882 prisoners, ( Dust Bowl Folks 2) to their state prison in 3 years. Those refugees
accounted for 18 percent of San Quentin State Prison s total inmate population. In short, this not only
put California in a social slump but also an economic crisis. Thus causing many Californians to be
aggravated with the reality that thousands of these people were coming to live in their home state. Not
only were these refugees coming to their state and committing crime, the state of California and the
tax payers were now the ones responsible for feeding and sheltering these criminals. Most importantly,
this responsibility wasn t cheap, the average cost per year of a prisoner in San Quentin is $215,
making a total of $190,512, ( Dust Bowl Folks 2) according to the Healdsburg Tribune in 1939. Sadly,
even those who didn t resort to crime and came to California with the best of intentions often only
caused problems for Californians. Employment groups and local businesses often had to halt
employee hiring. They wanted to try to make sure that Californian citizens were the ones getting the
jobs over the refugees. However, with the magnitude of people trying to get jobs and the fact that

The Unjust Treatment Of Japanese Americans
The Unjust Treatment of Japanese Americans
A series of unfortunate events would soon unfold on the Japanese American race. Terror and fear hung
over individuals when they were not allowed to do the same things they have done in the past. It was
time to start a new life, in a whole new place, with different people they have not yet met before. It
was the beginning of a new age for the Japanese Americans, and it was also one they would have to
seek through in order to make it to the end. Events started to turn on December of 1941 where the
Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. This struck terror on the United States and panic spread throughout
the country. The deepened fear of the Americans caused the relocation of Japanese Americans to
relocate to one of several internment camps. Taking away the Japanese Americans away from their
home, especially when their documents were legalized stating they were citizens of the United States
of America, was a violation of their rights here in the U.S. In a war where the U.S. bravely fought to
preserve liberty, the Japanese American Internment stands out immeasurably, as a violation of the civil
and human rights of tens of thousands of families.
Disaster first struck on February 19, 1942, where Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the Executive Order
9066 which thereby gathered all the Japanese Americans and relocated them to one of the 10
internment camps (Gruenewald, p 48). A man by the title of General DeWitt, advised Franklin D.

not only responsible but also accountable for the working conditions of foreign countries that it does

that taking advantage of low cost destination but also taking responsibility of the

If so what? Should Nike make changes even if they hinder the ability of the company to compete?
Nike needs to ensure that all the contractors comply with the wages and local working conditions in
respective countries. Nike can do this either by appointing a labor inspector in each of the factories for
all the contractors and asking them to report the details of all the workers working in their respective
factories and this report need to be reviewed by legal experts at the country level and worldwide level
to ensure that all the laws are in compliance by contractors of Nike. Any non compliance should be
considered seriously and serious actions should be taken against all such contractors, which might
result in termination of contracts with such factories. In fact, Nike should go ahead and open schools
for children of workers working in their factories across different countries to take care of the
developments of its workers across the globe. Nike should make such changes even if this means
termination of contracts with non compliance factories or more expenses for development of workers
in factories. This is because all organizations in today s world affect the society and hence they need to
be sensitive towards the conditions of the employees and the society. Thus, Nike should engage in

Top Nuclear Security Challenge Facing The World
Top Nuclear Security challenge facing the world in The 21st century

Summary
About two thousands metric tons of high unreached uranium are spread around the world in militaries
facilities. Securing those facilities is step number one for a world free of nuclear weapons. Also,
Terror group threats should be taken into account for a safer world. The proliferation of nuclear
weapons considered a threat to the globe. However, huge steps were taken by the international
committee to eliminate nuclear weapons. Finally, high enriched uranium could be replaced to nuclear
fuel that generating clean energy and making the world more peaceful.

However, many countries started to seek for these kind of weapons. After about three decades of the
first use of nuclear attack, a nuclear power plant major accident occurred in Chernobyl, causes a huge
amounts of radioactive particles to spread around the plant. Due to that, the surrounded city was
evacuated and a lot of people was contaminated and some of them died [2].
II. Securing Nuclear Materials Facilities
The first step in nuclear free world plan is highly secure the weapons grade materials such as high
enriched uranium and plutonium. Even thought, Y 12 nuclear weapons production facility was
intruded by protesters back in 2012. This facility is highly protected and secured. Nevertheless, the
protesters made it to the main building. Fortunately, they didn t mean to harm anything. The point of
the protesters is to send a message that peace is much better than war [3]. Y 12 break is a proof that
nuclear facilities still have lake of secure and surveillance. Moreover, Nuclear weapons facilities are

Analysis of the Graduate Essay
The Graduate is a great example of a film where lens and camera choices were used effectively to
convey the director s point of view. It seemed like every choice made by the director Mike Nichols
director and the director of cinematography Bob Surtees was justified. The outcome of each shot
played an important role in shaping the message of the film. The cinematography of Bob Surtees is
very complicated and thoughtful but at the same time seems poetic and spontaneous.
All of Mrs. Robinson and Benjamin s scenes pass in a musically backed montage sequence, a segment
that uses rapid editing, special effects and music to present compressed narrative information. This
shows the endless pass of time. One scene is edited so that it ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The image seems very flat. The viewer cannot focus on anything but the characters faces. The depth of
field and depth of focus are very small. One of the reasons why this scene was shot like that was
because of the rain. Mike Nichols wanted this scene to take place on a very rainy day. Of course no
one would ever think about waiting for real rain in Beverly Hills during the summer so they had to
create it by themselves. The crew set up a rainmaker over the car in which the actors were riding.
They shot from alongside and from in front using a 500 millimeter telephoto lens which threw the
background so far out of focus that it was impossible to tell whether it was pouring in the distance or
not. This was a great example of a practical use of lenses. The Graduate, however, was rich in many
experimental uses of the camera that were mainly chosen to more directly describe the characters state
of minds.
Thinking that confessing the truth to Elaine will solve everything, Benjamin makes a major
miscalculation. He rushes towards the house with Mrs. Robinson pursuing close behind. Here again,
the scene of Ben running towards the house was shot with a telephoto lens. This lens was chosen to
create an illusion that rain is present everywhere, not only over Ben s head. The use of the telephoto
lens and the movement of the camera created another very interesting effect. The moment when Ben is
running was shot from a farther distance. One can notice that the camera

a. Identify at least two of the pioneers of the IQ testing movement and explain their contributions to
the field
Two of the pioneers of the IQ testing movement I chose were Alfred Binet (who collaborated with his
colleague Theodore Simon and Lewis Terman who also worked with Binet on the American version.
Alfred Binet is a French psychologist who is known to have developed the very first practical
intelligence test which became the basis for contemporary intelligence tests. He worked with a young

Lewis Terman, a Stanford University psychologist is another pioneer in the field of IQ Testing because
he was instrumental in bringing the Binet Simon Scale from France to the United States. He adapted
the test which became Stanford Binet Intelligence Test and was widely used that it has become the
standard intelligence testing in the US. This was when the concept of intelligence quotient (or IQ) was
first introduced. Terman also contributed to the development of the first reliable mass group
intelligence test during the World War 1 which was used by the U.S. Army Alpha and Beta programs.
b. What do you think are some potential pros and cons of the use of IQ testing in schools?
There are two opposing sides when it comes to the issue of IQ testing in schools. Many advocates
believe that IQ testing is the best way to identify and assess children s levels of aptitude and that it is
useful in determining who amongst the general school population need additional specialized or
differentiated instruction and extra services (GATE or even IEP) that may not be otherwise be
provided for in a regular classroom. It is also a tool which can be taken advantage of to help teachers

The Amendment On Searches And Seizures
In two Supreme Court cases and one Court of Appeals case, the Fourth Amendment s clause on
searches and seizures has been questioned in a public school setting. These cases are based on the
question of what constitutes a reasonable search in a public school, as well as, what is defined as a
search and how far that search and seizure can go. These cases collectively examine the exclusionary
rule, the change from probable cause to reasonable suspicion, what constitutes a search and how far
that search can go. In a public school setting, students rights to be free from searches and seizures
differ from others, as shown in TLO v. New Jersey, Vernonia v. Acton, and Doe v. Renfrow.

This evidence of drug dealing was turned over to the police and the police asked TLO s mother to
bring her to the police station for further questioning, which resulted in her confession of selling
marijuana at the school. In the Supreme Court, TLO lost to New Jersey 6 3. The question brought to
the court in this case was, did Choplick s search violated TLO s Fourth Amendment, and did the
exclusionary rule apply to the search.
In a public school, it was determined that a person can always refuse a search, there is need for
reasonable suspicion for a search, as opposed to probable cause and the exclusionary rule does not
apply. In TLO, the initial suspicion to search TLO s purse was justified due to the suspicion that she
had been smoking in the bathroom. The majority opinion, written by Byron R. White, stated, Under
ordinary circumstances, a search of a student by a teacher or other school official will be justified at its
inception when there are reasonable grounds for suspecting that the search will turn up evidence that
the student has violated or is violating either law or the rules of the school. The Court ruled in favor of
the school because there was a reason to believe that the defendant had broken a school rule
prohibiting smoking in the restrooms. This clarification by the Court holds that even students in a
public school are protected by

Makeup ideas for blue eyes, makeup tips for blue eyes, eye makeup for blue eyes
Having a recessive trait like blue eyes is seen as a mark of beauty. Blue eyes may seem cold but the
different hues they encompass can really make someone eyes look enigmatic. However, choosing the
right kind of makeup to go along with those pretty blue eyes can be a tiresome task in itself. You must
realize that not everything and anything can go along with blue eyes. One thing might undermine their
charm while the other might be too bland and bare. There are tons of different makeup tricks for blue
eyes out there, but truthfully, you have got to know which ones the best for you. So, here are a few

Warm Hues
Like it was mentioned before, blue is a calming color with an icy undertone, so one of the ultimate tips
that you can do to augment your eye color is to truly use lots of various hues that consist of warm
colors. The colors that are included in this category are browns, tones of an earthy nature and also
some softer colors that would suit your beautiful blue eyes superbly.
7. Simplicity Pays
Blue eyes are naturally beautiful and have an enchanting look that is an instant crowd puller. So
sometimes you don t require tons of eye makeup to surround your eyes, you just need to go simple and
show them off. Earnestly, too much of color and makeup can divert from you re the natural beauty of
eyes.
8. Highlight
Highlight is the need of the hour in the present times. So make sure that you accompany your eyeliner
or eyeshadow with some highlights. The highlights will softly encase your eyes and also vivify them.
The correct way of applying them is to put them just below your brow bones and in the corner on the
inner side of your eyes. You must make sure that you apply a slightly daintier color in terms of
eyeshadow like silver or beige.

Critique Of Mcdevitt s Book Report
Question Two: A critique of McDevitt s Book
McDevitt s book is a well written and useful publication for learners, people with interest or managers
in the administration of their respective investigative unit. Fundamentally, there is plenty of useful
information in the book.
To begin with, the author highlights how efficacy can be increased amid the investigative officers and
how resources can be used to make investigations better. These are very important points because they
assist a lot of people in a number of ways. Chiefly, the management of resources is perhaps the single
biggest hurdle in management of investigations. Generally, investigations require a lot of funds to
proceed. On the same note, they involve travelling and a lot of field ... Show more content on

Certainly, this perspective is important in a situation where the number of investigative officers is
limited. However, this is not entirely true in most situations. In reality, the number of investigative
officers is usually sufficient to handle the crimes that are reported. Concerning the issues of time, it
would be prudent of the author to only suggest that the arrival time of the investigators should be
prompt to facilitate faster collection of evidence but not that the patrol officers should take it upon
themselves to begin the investigations. The author repeats this point in a number of sections.
Seemingly, the author has a certain bias towards extending favorable treatment towards the patrol

The learning provisions for development in literacy are extremely important and can be reached by
using their language skills. They learn to communicate with others through three main ways: they are
Speaking, Reading and Writing. These three areas interact with each other and develop the Childs self

Whilst in class during a literacy lesson, children with very little English language will complete early
learning games. This could be made up of cards matching pictures to their English word cards, for
example, a picture of a horse will match to the word horse . As their English progresses, they would
become more involved in the lessons that the whole class is doing, but we would be considerate by
using more basic language so that it gives the child confidence in what they are doing. Correcting their
grammar is essential; otherwise they fall into lazy habits. However, this must be done in a sensitive
and caring manner. An example of this is a year 4 Portuguese boy in my class. He has been with us for
2 years. He recently asked me can I drink water please . I told him the correct way to ask was can I
have a drink of water please . He now asks correctly each time.
1.2, Summarise the relevant policy and age related expectations of learners relevant to literacy
development in the setting.
If you are supporting pupils literacy development you will need to be aware of your schools English or
literacy policy. This will outline your schools approach to the teaching of reading, writing, speaking
and listening and should follow local or national guidelines. In England and Wales, the National
Primary Literacy Framework outlines the structure for the teaching of literacy. It shows 12 strands of

Why People Commit The Crime Essay
Criminological theory is the explanation of criminal behavior, as well as the behavior of juveniles,
attorneys, prosecutors, judges, correctional personnel, victims, and other actors in the criminal justice
process. Criminological theory is important because most of what is done in criminal justice is based
on criminological theory, whether we or the people who propose and implement policies based on the
theory know it or not. In criminology, examining why people commit the crime is very important in
the ongoing debate on how crime should be handled or committed. Several criminological theories
that best describe the cause for juvenile delinquency is social disorganization, strain, social process,
control, labeling, conflict, and development life course theory. We will compare and contrast these
different theories with a focus on adolescent involvement in criminal street gangs.
Social disorganization is defined as an inability of community members to achieve shared values or to
solve jointly experienced problems (Bursik, 1988). In recent decades, the themes of social
disorganization theory have been more clearly articulated and extended by Kornhauser (1978), Bursik
and Grasmick (1993), and Sampson and Groves (1989). Shaw and McKay traced social
disorganization to conditions endemic to the urban areas that were the only places the newly arriving
poor could afford to live, in particular, a high rate of turnover in the population (residential instability)
and mixes of people

Pride in A Good Man is Hard to Find, Good Country People and Revelation
Pride is a very relevant issue in almost everyone s lives. Only when a person is forced to face his pride
can he begin to overcome it. Through the similar themes of her short stories, Flannery O Connor
attempts to make her characters realize their pride and overcome it.
In A Good Man is Hard to Find, the grandmother is a typical Southern lady. This constant effort to
present herself a Southern lady is where her pride is grounded. She criticizes the mother s traveling
outfit, but she herself is wearing a prim and proper and probably uncomfortable outfit so that anyone

Similarly, Joy/Hulga is forced to face her pride in O Connor s Good Country People. Bruce L.
Edwards, Jr., notes that Hulga sees herself as liberating people from their illusions, believing she has
none of her own (901). Joy/Hulga s perspective on life is bleak and realistic. She achieves a Ph.D. in
philosophy and believes in the simplicity of believing in nothing. Her mother holds to simple Southern
beliefs that manners and tact determine a person s goodness. It is for this reason that she views the
Bible salesman as a good person. Joy/Hulga sees through her mother s shallow country ways and
despises her for it. Besides her beliefs, her wooden leg is also the center for her pride. She is as
sensitive about the artificial leg as a peacock about his tail (O Connor, Good Country People 404). She
uses it for attention when stomping around the house and for security when refusing to reveal its
secrets to Manly Pointer, the Bible salesman. However, Manley is not as shallow as he seems but turns
out to bring Joy/Hulga to her point of grace. He robs her security and leaves a helpless, vulnerable,
and bewildered new person to reestablish her beliefs. Joy/Hulga has had her pride stripped away and
must now change herself.
Finally, O Connor uses a similarly intellectual girl to bring Mrs. Turpin to a point of grace in
Revelation. While in the waiting room, Mrs. Turpin

Milgram study
One of the best well known studies of obedience in psychology was conceded out by Milgram.
Milgram clarified the behavior of his applicants by recommending that people have double states of
behavior when they are in a social situation:
1. The autonomous state: people direct their own actions, and they take responsibility for the results of
those actions.
2. The agentic state: people allow others to direct their actions and then pass off the responsibility for
the consequences to the person giving the orders. In other words, they act as agents for another person

Wizard of Oz as a Fairytale Essay
Wizard of Oz as a Fairytale
This question is deceptive in its apparent simplicity as it raises some problematic issues, which extend
beyond the text right across fairytale scholarship.
The term fairytale itself is a contentious one and is unpopular with many folklorists (see Luthi,
Warner, Luke). Often epithets like wondertale , magic tale are employed. Even in some English
translations of European works the more semantically accurate Russian or German terms (volshebnye

This distance is necessitated by Oz s irreconcilable differences from what Baum himself calls the old
time fairy tale exemplified by the fantastic stories of Grimm (Baum, 1).
So , with fairytale consistency, we shall begin at the beginning:
On the very first page of Oz Baum actually states that his wish was to create a modern American fairy
tale similar to the old time collections of the Grimm brothers.
This artistic intention instantly problematises the text in the context of its generic status. It begs the
question of whether a story can be a true fairytale if it is so informed by its natural predecessors which
sprang almost spontaneously from ancient and anonymous sources. Baum writes with a scholarly
knowledge of fairytales behind him. In fact he wrote a 1902 essay On the Fairytale.
Fairytales have a vaguely documented chronology that potentially stretches back to thousands of years
BC. They are sourced from myth, legend, the collective unconscious, rumour, tradition or abstractions
from real events (Propp, xvii). It could be argued that Oz has the same ultimate roots but its lineage is
traceable due to its age and the relative youth of the socio political cultural environment that spawned
it. In wonder tales the author is not a considered presence; they are cumulative creations that arose out

Superheroes, Despite Their Different Powers, All Possess
Superheroes, despite their different powers, all possess similar characteristics that define them, such as

hero in William Shakespeare s play, King Lear, possesses characteristics that define him as a tragic
hero, as stated by Aristotle in Poetics via A.C. Bradley s The Shakespearean Tragic Hero. King Lear is
a character of high social status, and he possesses exceptional qualities that make him a well respected

However, as the play progresses, his suffering that is caused by the impulsive decision to divide his
kingdom is clearly seen. This suffering is illustrated through the loss of his sanity, ultimately due to
the sudden loss of his power, his deteriorating relationships with his daughters, and the inability to
prevent these negative outcomes. Upon realizing his mistake of solely letting Regan and Goneril
inherit his kingdom, Lear is ashamed that [his daughters have the] power to shake [his] manhood
(I.iv.299 301). His daughters, who are women and are therefore considered to be less important and
powerful in his society, have taken control of Lear s power and life, and it is embarrassing to him as
he is used to receiving constant honour, pride, and glory as the King. This illustrates the start of him
losing his sanity, and soon, Lear is seen pleading to the gods to keep [him] in temper and to not [let
him] be mad, as he is stripped away from all that is his (I.v.43 44). As King Lear pleads for help to
maintain his sanity, his sufferings are clearly illustrated as the change in his character is evident; a
change from a virtuous, powerful king, to a mentally unstable, powerless, and embarrassed beggar like
character. This form of suffering is unusual because a sudden but significant loss of power is rare,

Hemingway depicts the expatriates disconnect from the natural world in order to portray this
generation s improbable renewal. After participating in a war which went against the principles of
nature in its needless destruction, the expatriates have lost comprehension of the inherently human
will to desire and consequently accomplish. This cyclical course of completed events is lacking in the
expatriates lives and is replaced by a linear repetition which conveys emptiness. Through detachment
from traditional human passions, the expatriates misunderstand fundamental laws of nature. Passing a
taxidermist in Paris, Bill suggests that Jake purchase a stuffed dog. He refers to the practice of
taxidermy as a simple exchange of values. You give them money. They give you a stuffed dog (p. 78).
Bill exalts a pattern formed by commerce and artificiality, which replaces the traditional cycle of death

Analyzing the Twinkletoes, My Best Girl, and Metropolis...
The St Andrean film poster for Twinkletoes (Charles Brabin, USA, 1926), My Best Girl (Sam Taylor,
USA, 1927), and Metropolis (Fritz Lang, Germany, 1927) signifies the rise of the star system and film
production companies. Furthermore, it touches on the broadening of the local theatrical audience, the
decline of the internationality of film, the popularity of female sexualization, the continued interest in
spectacle, and the growing interest in the modern and futuristic. Additionally, the poster mentions the
beginnings of a shift from focus on spectacle to narrative.
Firstly, one of the most notable of the features of the poster is the names of starring actresses. Unlike
previous posters, the prominence of Co[l]leen Moore and [M]ary Pickford indicate the emergence of
the star system, which gains momentum in the 1930s, soon after the release of these films. The poster
also specifies that this is Pickford s only appearance this year in an attempt to entice her fans,
otherwise unable to see her theatrically. Moreover, the name of the production company for
Twinkletoes is also foregrounded. Although the Universum Film AG logo and the local distributor for
Metropolis are less stressed, they are still present. Together, these two instances reveal the growing
importance of production and distribution companies in the industry.
Secondly, by combining three distinct genres, the romantic comedy, the romantic drama, and sci fi, the
poster broadens its local audience,

  • 2. Heraclitus Ethos Pathos And Logos Seetha Aribindi Heraclitus was one of the natural philosophers from Ephesus in Asia Minor, circa 540 480 B.C. , who believed that constant change or flow was the basic characteristic of nature. He believed the world was characterized by opposites and it would cease to exist without their constant interplay. God is day and night, winter and summer, war and peace, hunger and satiety, he said, believing God can be seen most clearly in constant transformations and contrasts in nature. (p 28) But instead of God he used the greek word logos which means reason, as he believed that there must be a kind of universal reason or universal law guiding everybody and everything that happens in nature. Thus amid constant flux and opposites throughout nature, Heraclitus believed an Entity or one ness , called God or logos was the source of everything. The effluent can also serve industrial heating and cooling purposes. Wastewater has a huge potential of electricity generation. Technologies exist for on site energy recovery through sludge/biosolids treatment processes integrated in wastewater treatment plants, allowing for transition from major energy consumers to energy producers. Strict standards for discharge often require energy intensive advanced treatment technologies. As a result, the number of plants using advanced treatment has increased [17]. This corresponds to half a litre of diesel oil and 5.5 kg of firewood [21]. 4.2 Microbial Fuel Cell Technology Wastewater treatment is an energy intensive process, consuming about 1,900 kJ/m3 of treated wastewater [22]. Wastewater contains almost 9 times more energy than the energy used to treat an equivalent volume, thus creating the need to harness this energy through the use of a Microbial Fuel Cell (MFC) [22]. Microbial Fuel cell (MFC) is a device designed for electricity generation in the process of wastewater treatment [23]. Microbial fuel cell is a new form of renewable energy, which uses bacteria in wastewater to convert organic matter into electricity, while simultaneously treating the wastewater. Review Of What Women Can Learn From Men By Margaret Wente A Review of What Women Can Learn From Men By Margaret Wente Margaret Wente s July 2015 Globe and Mail article, What Women Can Learn From Men addresses a common phenomenon, the comparison: between men and women. With her article, she hopes to advise women on how they can improve themselves and their lives with simple changes. Furthermore, she wisely chooses to avoid a sexist approach by commending men on their behavioral traits despite her gender. Infact, using logical implications, she portrayed herself as an example rather than offend her audience. Additionally, through evidence, figures, facts and a link, she skillfully supports her theories thus making her article significantly factual and effective. Although Margaret starts by stereotypically generalising men, she depicts some of their great qualities that women can truly learn from. Using different approaches, she portrays women and their thoughts then skillfully explains how they can better themselves by thinking like men. Despite how she initially condemned men, she concludes by logically beseeching that man shaming has gone far enough and should stop. Despite being an article in the extensively read Canadian newspaper the Globe and mail , Margaret s target audience is the broad female population. She therefore uses a different approach, one with less specialized language, as was stated in Mind Wide Open. The purpose is quite clear: she portrays women s behavioral traits and their thoughts then ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Struggle For Political Balance Delaney Reed Mrs. Barcroft AP Government 9 October 2015 The Struggle for Political Balance Americans were known as a pioneering people who would struggle and fight to build for themselves. A people who pushed the entire world into a new era and has continued to push the limits of technology, military, and culture. After Britain finally surrendered the colonies to the American citizens a new republican experiment was conducted. One that is still going on to this very day and every citizen of America is a part of this grand experiment. The British Colonies were independent from one another before the American Revolution, but a shared enemy began a strong bond between the states. After things settled down the states were allied with one another in a form of confederation and then finally under the Constitution as a united republic nation. There were those who were not completely for a strong central government and favored the confederate style, but there were also those who found comfort and strength in a centralized federal government. This federalist versus anti federalist debate has continued throughout all of American history each side with its strengths and weaknesses. The development of the debate and increase in federalism in American government can be highlighted by the doctrine of implied powers, commerce clause, the American Civil War, and the struggle for civil rights. It seemed like every choice made by the director Mike Nichols director and the director of cinematography Bob Surtees was justified. The outcome of each shot played an important role in shaping the message of the film. The cinematography of Bob Surtees is very complicated and thoughtful but at the same time seems poetic and spontaneous. All of Mrs. Robinson and Benjamin s scenes pass in a musically backed montage sequence, a segment that uses rapid editing, special effects and music to present compressed narrative information. The viewer cannot focus on anything but the characters faces. The depth of field and depth of focus are very small. One of the reasons why this scene was shot like that was because of the rain. Mike Nichols wanted this scene to take place on a very rainy day. Of course no one would ever think about waiting for real rain in Beverly Hills during the summer so they had to create it by themselves. The crew set up a rainmaker over the car in which the actors were riding. They shot from alongside and from in front using a 500 millimeter telephoto lens which threw the background so far out of focus that it was impossible to tell whether it was pouring in the distance or not. This was a great example of a practical use of lenses. The Graduate, however, was rich in many experimental uses of the camera that were mainly chosen to more directly describe the characters state of minds. Thinking that confessing the truth to Elaine will solve everything, Benjamin makes a major miscalculation. He rushes towards the house with Mrs. Robinson pursuing close behind. Here again, the scene of Ben running towards the house was shot with a telephoto lens. This lens was chosen to create an illusion that rain is present everywhere, not only over Ben s head. The use of the telephoto lens and the movement of the camera created another very interesting effect. The moment when Ben is running was shot from a farther distance. The Amendment On Searches And Seizures In two Supreme Court cases and one Court of Appeals case, the Fourth Amendment s clause on searches and seizures has been questioned in a public school setting. Why People Commit The Crime Essay Criminological theory is the explanation of criminal behavior, as well as the behavior of juveniles, attorneys, prosecutors, judges, correctional personnel, victims, and other actors in the criminal justice process. Criminological theory is important because most of what is done in criminal justice is based on criminological theory, whether we or the people who propose and implement policies based on the theory know it or not. In criminology, examining why people commit the crime is very important in the ongoing debate on how crime should be handled or committed. She achieves a Ph.D. in philosophy and believes in the simplicity of believing in nothing. Her mother holds to simple Southern beliefs that manners and tact determine a person s goodness. It is for this reason that she views the Bible salesman as a good person. Joy/Hulga sees through her mother s shallow country ways and despises her for it.
