The document discusses conventions commonly used in music videos. It describes the use of different camera shots, movements, and editing techniques. It also explains how mise-en-scene elements like lighting, location, and props help set the mood of the video and aid the audience's understanding. Close-ups are important to see lyrics, and camera movements follow the artist. Jump cuts and transitions smoothly move between scenes. Color, shots of the artist, and target audiences help distinguish conventions of pop and indie/rock music videos.
2. Camera Shots
Music videos usually use many, close ups, mid shots and long shots. These
shots are effective because they allow the audience to understand the
emotions shown and the locations where the video is shot. Close ups are
also very important because it allows the audience to see the lips move and
therefore really see the movement of the lyrics.
Camera Movements
The movement of the camera is primarily to follow the movement of the
artist or the singer in the video. The camera movements include pans, tilts,
crane shots and tracking.
3. Mise-en-Scene
Mise-en-scene is most commonly known to be the arrangement of props
and performers either on the stage or the individual scenes in a music
video.
As well as this mise en scene includes lighting. The lighting is very
effective because it is a crucial part in aiding the viewer to understand the
mood of the video that they are watching. For example if it is dark lighting
then the audience will understand that is sad or deep music video, unlike a
bright music video which will be understood to be happy and upbeat.
Lastly the location of the music video is an important convention to
consider as it will also allow the audience to understand the mood of the
song.
4. Editing
It is found that jump cuts are the most commonly used editing
technique found in music videos as it allows quick cuts to the next
scene. Similarly transitions are a smooth way of moving from one
scene to another and keeping the story of the video flowing
smoothly.
